Somerset Land Based HELP!

My fishing Club is having it's first comp of the year at somerset...

I will be restricted to land based as I will have the Mrs and 2 kids with.. SO...

I need to know where to go given the current water level, that I might be able to land a couple of fish...

We will starting at The Spit at 6am...

Any help would be great... Bait / Tackle as well...

bait live shrimp. lures spinners, lipless crank baits.

Unless you are going to catch your own at the dam, I would suggest a pet store/aquarium for some shrimp.

Pet City at Mt Gravatt get their shipments in on a Thursday and they're usually a good bait size (ie not too small)

watch them though. normally when one karks it the rest follow pretty quick i've heard. you'll need an aerator and dont let the water get to hot.

since the water levels gone up try casting spinnerbaits out around the edge you might get a few or try near the house on kirkliegh with bait should be able to tangle with something there even if it is a cattie

I have a couple of opera house... what bait should I use in them for fresh water??

Should I throw a cast net around too....

I have only ever been fresh water once b4..

Operas aren't much good for shrimp. You're better off with shrimp traps. They have finer mesh. Pick them up cheap (around$10) at the BigW and KMarts etc. Maybe even Tackleworld. Have to check with PlasticMan.

I don't think castnetting is legal at the dam. It's not in fresh rivers.

A bit of KFC or even bread will attract the shrimp.

I have also seen soap bars (yes the ones we use in shower) work as a good attractant for shrimp in both fresh and saltwater. We use the yellow sunsilk variety in the brown shrimp traps

yeh mick no castnetting in non-tidal waters, if you get there before sunrise you should be able to get a few big shrimp in the traps
