After many years of catching FINGERMARK up north i can tell you kev they are a different fish. They resemble moses perch when they are young (have the black dot) but when they grow bigger and move to the reef the loose their spot. Moses perch live further south and dont grow as big.

Moses perch (fingermark bream)

There is the proof, TOTALLY DIFFERENT.

Genus Lutjanus includes about 67 species of perciform fish commonly known as snappers.

That link gives the 67 species of fish in the genus.

Although many of them may have similar common names, they are in fact totally different species within the genus.

This is the case with the fingermark and the moses perch.

This is a Fingermark Kevin

http://www.fishingcairns.com.au/fish14.html

Fingermark are also known as Golden Snapper in the NT (Northern Terratory)

This is a Moses Perch http://www.fishingcairns.com.au/fish23.html

These were both found on the same site. Fingermark are a different species. Same Genus, different species.

I hope this settles it.

BTW: This has gone way, way, way off topic:huh:

They are different fish, I'm sure one has 14/15 rays in the soft dorsal fin and the other has 13

Ok guys, why don't we just give it a rest?:)

I'm pretty sure that Kevin has realised by now that real "Fingermark" and "Moses Perch" are different species. If he wants to refer to them differently/INCORRECTLY , it's his choice.

haha even cowfish is into this!

And kev when your catching moses perch, what size limit do you refer to Moses Perch are 25cm and fingermark are 35cm? What do you go by?

No one measures Moses perch do they?:S Just say damn was hoping that was a bream and chuck it back.:P

Unless they are 30cm or so. Moses Perch are a damn tasty fish. Although I seem to only get them in excess of 30cm outside of rivers and creeks. For example Dunwich at amity and on the reef.

Like a Jack, the larger models move onto the reefs to live.

I wonder if also like a Jack they come back in at all?

Never really see them much bigger than 25 in smaller waterways though hey?
