Rockets V Baroon Bass 4/5/08

Kath and I hit Baroon this afternoon hoping to find some of the bigger models that are hiding in there…somewhere.

We arrived at the Maleny ramp to perfect weather and a full parking lot.

There were people absolutely everywhere! There was some kind of Mustang Club day, and their gleaming beasts featured prominently amongst the throng.

We eventually found somewhere to park the car and trailer and headed off with lures in tow.

Turning left from the ramp we headed for the closest bays and there were plenty of fish evident on the sounder, so we drifted around casting shallow divers and spinnerbaits for a while. No joy, so we had a quick cuppa as we trolled over towards the standing timber.

I had a largish 3m diver on one of the heavier outfits, and as I watched it’s action for evidence of weed, I saw a quick tap, then another, then the lure stopped working.

Figuring I was weeded, I wound it in to find my first spangled perch on a lure.

Fair dinkum, the lure was bigger than him, talk about ambitious!

A quick snap and he’s on his way. We trolled back across the dam towards the far bank and after 2 lure changes and lots of water under the boat, Kath’s outfit does its thing.

What did the trick? Well, the fact that she had an apple in one hand and a drink in the other should not be a surprise, eating and drinking is one of the fail safe ways to trigger a strike. The lucky lure was the trusty 8m crazy deep Halco Poltergeist in purple/silver.

Photo opportunity taken, a good size bass (for us at Baroon!) of 33cm goes back in for another day. Not long after, trolling up the middle of the Dam towards the tower, Kath’s on again.

This bass goes much harder, and even on 4-8 kg gear, gives Kath a good tussle.

About the same size as the last, his performance was due to the fact that the treble lodged on the top of his head. That would make me angry too.

Action on the troll slowed down as we hit the bay Feral and Lee mentioned in a previous post. We moved into the humungous weed beds casting ourselves silly, but got nothing but grass and weeds. Churning our way through the weed, we moved out towards the main body of the dam, stopping in a little bay that had a channel of relatively clear water between the weed and the shore. Kath was experimenting with a “pusher†type surface lure, while I was plugging away with the spinnerbaits. I changed from yellow to a dark purple 5/8 tandem AusSpin in the hope that a change would bring me some luck.

Ignoring my own, and tracking Kath’s surface lure in the hope of seeing a strike, I was very slowly winding in my spinner, stopped to talk to Kath and BANG…I’m on.

Though obviously not a huge fish, it hit hard and fought well. Steering him clear of the weed, he made it safely onboard for his own Kodak moment (33cm), then back he went.

This was the first time I had landed a bass on a spinner that had been retro-fitted with a stinger hook, so I was interested to see which hook did the business. As it turns out, both hit the mark, the main hook was in the corner of the mouth and the stinger was under the jaw…he was not getting off in a hurry!

That was all the action for today, once again we found it hard work getting a hit despite lots of sounder action.

Back at the ramp just as the light failed we headed home happy to have got a few, but feeling that there are better fish to be had. Next time….

Thanks for reading, some pics to follow.
