Hi, Wondering if anyone can reccomend a good laptop for around the $2000 mark. Would prefer a 17inch screen and needs atleast 2gig Ram and 200Gig Harddrive, 256/512mb Graphics wouldnt go astray either.

Thanks.

PS. Would prefer around $1700 but will go up to $2000.

Toshiba Satellite A200/W00

Thats my 2 favourites

Mate, I have a Toshiba Satellite A200 something or other, not sure on exact model, but know it is the A200, in the 15.4" screen, 160GB HDD and a heap of other features that I don't understand. And for me it has been great, It's just under a year old now and has served me very well.

When I was looking at buying one I was looking at the vaio range (Sony) however I asked a mate who is an electronics engineer and computer whizz about them, he said whilst they are great computers, you are really paying for the 4 letters written on them. He suggested that Toshiba will give me more bang for my buck and are very sturdy computers, both physically and platform wise. So I took his advice and haven't looked back since.

Cheers,

Matt

I'm a Mac convert now and I highly recommend them, unfortunately in your price range you'll only be able to get the macbooks which only have a 13" screen. I'm really happy with my mac and have no problems with the switch at all. Don't know if you are considering macs at all but they are a great machine..

as terry mentioned asus is good otherwise fujitsu and lenovo is ok as well, they should all have some that fit your requirements. 17inch is pretty big if your gonna be carrying it around (walking/public transport) i would go for something smaller like 14.1 or 15inch, but if 17 is what you need then go for it.

Im not really going to be transporting it its mainly a pc for myself just to use at home and 17" would be good but its quite hard to find them.

why use a notebook if ur not travelling? i won't get a pack rod to fish my backyard.

exactly what kevs saying - really pointless if your only using it at home, for home use deff get a desktop. they are easier to repair, cheaper to upgrade and cheaper overall if you shop at the right places and know what your after. but end of the day its your choice mate

Mate,

Don't just rush out and purchase one this week. The federal budget had a lovely hidden change which is going to affect the market for laptaps/notebooks. Previously you could salary sacrifice a notebook for private use but as of 7.30pm Tuesday that is no longer possible. The option to salary sacrifice still exists if the laptop is a tool of trade but for most employees when that is the case the laptop is supplied by the employer anyway.

In the past a lot of mums & dads have been salary sacrificing laptops to give their teenage kids one, some with multiple kids are doing it every year. I wouldn't be surprised if Dell & a couple of the other manufacturers are going to find themselves a little overstocked in laptops over the coming weeks as the attractive pricing has just been removed for a fair portion of the market.
