Brissy Bust Up

20/05/2008

The day started off pretty slowly, woke up at 5 and took about an hour to drag myself out of bed and to the car. Fark it was cold, checked the thermometer – 12 degrees in my bedroom. I think it was around 6:15 or so when I fired up the car, and headed off to Pinkenba, stopping off for some breaky.

But wait. This time I remembered the new slugs.. woot! But crap, forgot the camera! Oh noes. Still got my phone I guess (5MP camera).

Once I hit the water at around 7 or just after, I flicked on my sounder which has recently been installed in my hobie and man... I love watching sounders :D Here’s one snapshot:

So there’s plenty of fish around, that’s sweet! Except I left my deep divers and plastics in the car or at home. I headed out and saw a few fish getting the bust up around the marker just inside the river near the poop shoot. Flicked out the sx60 and retrieved it in.. bang! Woo no hookup though  Flicked it out again.. bang! Yep I’m on, sweet! This little fellow was no match for 4lbs though, so after taking out the trebles, which then became a double, I let him go.

I didn’t worry about working on any more of the fish there, I continued out to the mud flats to see if I could rustle up a big flatty on a sand viper. It wasn’t before too long when bang! Yep the sx60 is on again. It was pretty obvious that it wasn’t a big fish and a small tailor of about 20cm was skull dragged in on 4lbs. Maybe next time..

By now I’m seeing birds smashing the surface so head on over. Would have taken a photo, but realistically I was too busy flicking slugs and cranking them in to take a photo, and didn’t really want to bust out my phone for photos in case it got wet. Thankfully these tuna weren’t moving around at a great pace, but they never really stayed in one spot for too long. One thing I did like is they moved at a relatively slow pace, busting up for a short period then sounding to round up more bait before busting up. I found it pretty easy to keep up with them. These things were pretty close to those big ships, and one had just pulled in with 2 tugs kicking out a lot of water and noise. Now that’s surprising hey?:)

Well it didn’t take too long and there were a few boaties around, when BANG.

Yep, that’s what I wanted to feel ;) and line flies off at a rate I’ve never seen before. By this stage I’m holding onto the rod with 2 hands, it’s only 20lbs braid but I’ve used a bimini twist and 50lbs leader, and am not shy on the drag.. So it’s putting out quite a bit of drag.

Then suddenly the line stops going off one way, maybe its tired already? Pump n wind a bit, this is pretty easy I think! Woosh, holy crap, nope! The fish shoots off at a million miles under my yak...

0001.jpg

Crap rod’s half in the water and under my yak and I’m trying to pull it up to get it around or do something. Then it shoots off around in circles, goes down, stays down, shoots off in other directions all at a high rate of speed. By this stage the boatie that was near me has taken a couple of action shots with my rod loaded and is pretty interested in watching what’s unfolding from a kayak :)

After a nice little fight, I finally get some colour – woo that’s a nice fish! I get it a little closer, yep definitely a Mac Tuna, but holy sh$$ it’s a bit bigger than those smaller models I’ve seen elsewhere. Then it shoots off again and goes out of sight. Far out, what a fish. Can’t wait for the longtails I think to myself!

0003.jpg

Anyway, I finally land it and bust out the brag mat – didn’t photo the measurement, but it went 74cm. I would say it fought a lot better than a 84cm barra! But I’ve only caught one of each, so can’t really provide an experienced judgement:P

The boatie took a few more snaps, like with me holding the fish etc. And I let it go.

0009.jpg

Everyone followed the bust ups to try and get themselves a tuna, I was greedy and wanted another, I mean how can you not?? Haha. But no one else hooked up :(.

Final tally:

Me, the lone Kayaker: 1

4 Boaties (that I saw and spoke to a couple): Zip.

Proof there again, Kayaks win.

And my yak is named mojo for a reason.

PS: Since it's just outside the "River" in terms of the classic - I've thrown it into island and bay, but it was alongside the wharves at fishermans island.

I've got a copy of the photo - just waiting for a response as to if he minds me throwing it up on here :)

For those who read bush and beach - Mike Delisser is the boaty who was there taking shots and lost a good tuna on strike. So the pics could be in the next BnB, depending on cut offs

the fastest fish in the sea is the californian sailfish, followed closely by sailfish we get here (called a variety of different things worldwide), the mako, the striped, black and blue marlins, wahoo and southern bluefin tuna. interestingly, all billfish and most tuna are capable of maintaining their internal temperature at greater than the surrounding water through specialised muscle which capturea dn utilise anabolic heat. this allows them to operate at higher speeds for longer periods of time. The marlin and sailfish have evolved heated muscles behind the eye to help the eye move fast enough to focus on prey when the tail is beating at anything up to 40hz (40 times/second).

sorry for the biology lesson, i find that sort of stuff fascinating. hope it helps with the fastest fish argument.

well bugger me... my biology textbook has failed me...  the rest of it is true though!!!
