nice jewie you got there where was he caught

sorry mate, ain't telling. I have spent hundreds of hours over the past few years fishing up and down the coast, Seaway, Pin and Pumicestone Passage to 30 km offshore, trying to get a good jewie. I have caught a few schoolies and had one good jew sharked. Pretty stoked to find a spot so close to home where I can catch them now. It is a patch of rock/reef somewhere between the Gateway Bridge and the mouth. Probably only fits 1 or 2 boats at a time to fish it properly. I'll be spending a bit more time there over the next few months trying to get a bigger model and also one on a lure!

Very imppresive, I dont blame you one bit keeping that spot a secret. Good on ya. As I told someone earlyer, send Angus a photo for Bush'n'Beach magazine.

One of, if not the best catch I've seen come out of the Brisbane River.

I'm going to take a cold shower now!

Great jewy, the river sure does produces some thumpers.. Theres one horse in the gallery on this site thats 44.2kg... Also seen some around 20 - 25kg on plastics so sure is a good location for them nice work!

Have you got any threadys as by catch ?

Nice one Jeremy, on the line rating im sure thats a great score for a pretest comp?

As far as catching them on a lure, I have wondered often about that. Im surprised a jew hasnt been caught earlier with all the people targeting threaddies. There have been a few great ones caught here recentrly on Jakal transam etc.

Maybe we need to go bigger!!!

Well done again mate and cheers for the report..

Nice one Jeremy. Was the sharked one from the river also ?

Do you think that weight line aided in the capture ?

The sharked jewie was from a reef NE from the Pin bar. There seems to be plenty of big sharks there and we have hooked several for short periods.

Good question about the line. I do think that keeping things 'finesse' as natural as possible does help. I used a sinker just big enough to get the bait down and let it move around a bit and 40 lb leader. I don't think it would have made any difference if I had used 10 kg line, but maybe 24 kg or a heavier leader might have spooked the fish? Who knows? I do enjoy the challenge of catching large fish on (relatively) light line, and it is alot more fun having the fish make a few runs than skull dragging it in. My best is a 10 kg threadie on 2 kg pretest, which is a Queenslannd and pending National record.

that's the way it is. You are only eligible for game fishing and world records if you are a member of IGFA or GFAA. Sportfishing records can only be claimed if you are a member of the sportfishing community. Part of the reason is the rules which must be followed to be eligible in most of the divisions.

There aren't many people outside of the club game and sportfishers who use pretest line anyway, so there aren't too many 'large' fish taken outside of the club scene which would be eligible for line class records, other than all tackle.

Have you caught a better jewie than 10 kg on 6 kg pretest line? A better threadie than 10 kg on 2 kg pretest? No? than I an not sure what your point is really? Hope it is not just sour grapes?

They are top captures Jeff. You obviously know where I am coming from on the fun side of things and the challenge of trying to catch large fish on light line. I am surprised to hear that there are people out there NOT in ANSA fishing pretest, but good on ya. Still don't reckon there would be very many like you, which is why I don't believe that there would be very many captures on pretest better than the ones I posted.

But you are right, it isn't THAT difficult to do if you are set up for it properly and know what you are doing. If you look through the records charts which are publically available, some of the records are very good and you wonder how they did it and know that they will probably never be broken. Others are ripe for the picking.

I joined ANSA (Brisbane Sportfishing Club) back in the late 90's so that I could mix with people who had similar ideas about fishing to me. Fishing for fun and keep enough for a feed. I have never been too bothered by politics in the sport and barely notice it.

I fish pretest when I fish mono.

I must admit though I dont often because I like braid.

As with both Jeff and Jeremy i like to fish as light as i can get away with. Sometimes the fish wins sure, but I think that makes it all the more fun. Frustrating fun at times :P

Also in relation to sportfishing politics etc, I have been along to a couple of Brisbane Sportsfishing Clubs meetings and they are a top bunch of guy. Laid back and happy to answer questions as well. The presenters I have seen have also been very good at these meets.
