Early morning fish at Manly

I went and had a fish at the rockwall at Manly this morning.

Stoped at the warf and caught a heap of herring in a few minutes.

Anyway cut a long story short I had these larger herring about 15 cm long so I put them on.

Whack! got a big hit.. pulled it in... no hook ?....hmmmm

Got a few more hits but didnt hook em.

I did actually catch one very dopey and sluggish wobbygong, he was so slow I even had to grab him by the tail and throw him out past the rocks so he would swim into the shallows and get stuck,(he was about 3 foot, which was kinda big).

Funny thing was I didnt get a hit on the small Herrings?

Just a coincidence probably, but while Im at it I might as well ask the best way to hook these fellas, I usually just go through the back with a circle hook, but I often lose the fish because they tear the bait off.

I guess it could have been small Taylor...

But I always like to speculate the chances of it being somthing else :P

Spelt wobbegong apparently, pretty harmless creatures, camouflaged bottom dwellers, ambush small fish from the sea floor.

I can see on the site they are also known as carpet sharks.

I think its illegal to keep them.

If you look at the bottom of the link there is a picture of one attempting to eat a porcupine fish,

you think the wobbegong would spit it out but it looks really determined to eat it.

Flatty if you dont mind asking what warf did you caught those herring at going to put in at manly on thursday would love some live bait .cheers

I forget the name of it but its the one with the kiosk on it just as you drive through the car park you turn right.

In coming tide is best.

The end of Wello point is a good spot for herring and hardy heads too

sorry I cannot be more specific but those two spots are pretty good on an incoming tide.

With hooking up live bait ... if you find that when you hook the livie through the shoulders or back of the tail ... the bait keeps getting taken ... trying hooking the bait through the top of the mouth .. making sure you dont go through the brains haha lol ... some fish generally always go for the head first so this might solve your problem of not hooking up.
