Yakking in the wind Sat 31st May

Forecast of 40 knots & rain so why not go for a fish in the yak?

Spent an hour or so on the Stanley before the rain and cold chased us back to the car to turn on the heater.

Got one strike for one hookup and one fish landed (by Dad not me :( ).

Just a little fish again. [img size=500]http://www.australianfishing.com.au/media/kunena/attachments/legacy/images/afo_7673.jpg

To my knowledge:

They are not native to the stanley and are stocked.

What I found interested in a recent site I read regarding their recovery plan, was that you're allowed one if its caught above the walls of wivenhoe, somerset (stanley river) hinze, baroon etc but no mention of below.

of course, below Baroon Pocket Dam's wall would be considered the mary river catchment, and fishing for and taking of cod is totally prohibited.

very nice eater size, well done to you

To quote a fishing author from a recent article, "Cod are far too impressive a piece of Mother Nature's artwork to be used as a cheap source of protein".

I've never kept a freshwater cod, (Murray, Mary, Clarence nor trout cod) and never will, regardless of the regulations.

Terry you are right about the cod below Baroon, they are in the zero take area. The reason the regs don't specifically mention downstream of Wivenhoe is a mystery; they've been stocked directly in to the river. I'd assume that like all other waters outside the Mary they would be included in the 1 fish limit area.

One must however remember that our grandfathers fished the Brisbane River cod into extinction in the mid 1900s. Let’s do whatever we can to prevent a second occurrence of that shameful event.

Release them all & treat those we do catch as the treasures they are.

Bass are far more plentiful and are good to eat.

Nice fish mate, what gear was it taken on?

Got it on a Pflueger President CA631XH rod (6'3" 6-15kg) & Pflueger President Wide plug reel loaded with 15lb Platypus Super Braid.

Lure was a 125mm "Cod Lolly" ® in yellow with brown stripes.
