Dual Battery System for my Navara

Guys and girls,

Seeking information about putting a dual battery system into my Navara. I have done some research already and the best place to mount the battery is on the wheel arch in the tub area as space under bonnet is really limited. I have also been on to Fridge and Solar (poor bastard, you need to read his story there, what a champ!) and the Redarc isolator seems the way to go.

Does anyone have any other hints, tips, techniques or tricks (read between the lines here.... is anyone a auto electician and wants to bill me to do the fit up).

I know the AFO Network is alive and kicking judging by Shorties recent post.

What type of battery, and what are you going to use it for?

IE - If your going to have it available to crank the motor, the set up will be significantly different, as will the battery type (and weight), than if your just going to use it to run a fridge or something. For example a 30 kilo deep cycle would probably not be a great idea on the wheel arch, you would want it solid against something like the front of the well, so if you had an accident it did not clean you up on the way through.

If you check out ARB or TJM they will have after market battrey cradles for your veichle and you can pick up decent electronic isolators from mobs like super cheap although I had mine fitted by a guy up caboolture way at half the cost of a auto sparky could dig his details up if you wish hes a prison guard that has a 4wd accessory fitting deal on the side

There are a couple of ways you can do it.

Cheapest. (Use a solenoid.)

When the engine is running it tops up both batteries. You drain the auxillery battery only and when you start the motor the solinoid isolats the starting Battery. Relitivelly simple to setup.

2 method. Buy a smart solinoid or a duel battery controller.

I can help set it up for you. Have done just a couple in my time.

I got ARB to quote on a heap of stuff for my Pajero... Dual battery was worth over 800 from memory. That was with all the bells and whistles tho. I didn't go ahead with it of course but getting a mate to help chuck in a solenoid and maybe a switch or 2 sounds like a pretty good option compared to what i was given.
