Fuel Prices and Fishing!

Mick

Recommended Posts

I loaded the car up last night to go out to Manly for a squid and plastic session... I was getting away a couple of hours later than I wanted (kids) to so my time fishing was going to be reduced..

I loaded the Manly Boat Harbour into the Sat Nav and was surprised to see 50k trip from my house at Collingwood Park.. (100k round-trip)

My car gets about 11l/100k so I would have used 11l of fuel at $1.60 so that would have been $17.60 in fuel.

I now this sounds like I am a tight @r5e but with a wife 2 kids and a mortgage to feed it all adds up... If i got away and time, I still would have go but given the reduced time I would be away, and the cost (not to mention how cold it was last night).

I didn't go...  FUEL prices were the deciding factor in weather or not I we went fishing. :(

I have a plan ... more to come in the next few weeks

Yeh

I agree with you Mick the price of fuel is makes you think about fishing options.

I have done a couple of trips to the PIN recently and from my place on the northside it's 95klm each way and just over 90 minutes.

My Pajero fairly thirsty so that return trip with the boat on costs me around $50.

So when a mate who lives down there asked me to go again last week I considered not only the 3 hours travel time that I could use fishing on the northside but also the fuel cost.

So the answer was sorry mate just need to win the lotto first.

petrol cost was a large factor in me selling my skyline recently, it would easily go through $20 of petrol a day(home - work - work - home). and when i go fishing i dont stay in the same spot, every couple of hours we would move to target different fish etc so it was getting very costly.

Unfortunately I think its a fact of life, I used to play basketball with friends out in capalaba, its quite a drive for me but I enjoy it and used to go everyweek, with rising fuel prices I just can't afford it anymore... my fishing is also now limited to areas closer to home....

i know where you are coming from i have an old gas guzzling boat that would cost me over 150 bucks to fill with oil and fuel for a day and its only 15ft:( long id hate to be running a big boat and a v8 tow car at least the gas car helps with the price of geting around :)

I went from 115 hp to 225 hp then the price of fuel went up by about 50c a litre but now I just try to be more choosy about the days we go out on family trips to maximize the enjoyment and take as many deckies as possible to minimize the cost while not over crowding the boat on fishing trips

Yer i thinks its just gona have to become part of life now.

petrol prices arnt gona realy go down no matter how much we hope.

So for me this means just more river fishing and less goin to the sunshine or gold coasts.

Oh well at the end of the day fishing is still fishing no matter what ur catching!!

just my 2 cents.

i'd love a buck for every time i've seen people, and been in the company of people who comment and gripe about fuel prices and walk out of the servo with a bottle of water valued at twice the price of petrol per litre. not being intentionally disrespectful to those running a little tighter than myself just an observation i've made while on fuel topics.

I don't think fuel prices will come down but we were promised a "five point plan"... and something about "downward pressure on petrol prices"...

I think we should give "him" a chance but we should obviously expect petrol prices to flatten out now that we have a Fuel Commissioner to deliver on the promises.

Better days are ahead... or so they say.

Oh, I'm taking bets if anyone is interested!

:woohoo: :silly: :side: :woohoo: :silly: :side: :woohoo:

Mick

If you are thinking about getting a Surf see if you can pick up a 3ltr instead mate.

The 2.4ltr are a bit underpowered.

I just sold my 3 ltr Surf for $5900 only needed a respray and few minor cosmetic things fixed.

So you may be able to find something similar.

i haven't been using it myself, my cousin uses it to run his tractors and dozers on the farm. he had a few issues with filters etc when he first started, however, a bit of tweaking the mixture (you need to add catalysts etc to make it work) and it goes good in the tractor now. not sure if the same mixture would suit a road car but i can ask him tonight if you'd like. he gets all of his from take-away shops, and it smells like chips when the tractor is running! he also gets beef tallow from the abotoir and reduces that down. at less than 45c/L... goes good.

okay makin the stuff at home is illegal, but to make it basically you need methanol, chipper oil and i think its bi- carb soda but will double check next time i speak to the guy, i fella i know makes it and costs him roughly 55cents a litre. when making it though one little mess up with the heat though when making it and there will be a bigger ka-blamm then a old batman episode.

as for the topic, I only have to pay for fuel in the car (not the 'yak) and have never really taken notice of the costs, just fueled up and driven off to fishing. so hasn't really affected me.

Edit: as if you haven't noticed by me sometimes racing up the coast about 3-4 days out of the week for a yak

Bio diesel is slightly diferent from chip fryer oil.

Chip fryer oil solidifies if not warm. You need an element in your tank to keep it liquid.

Not good in modern vehicles.

With the goverment rebate on Gas conversions its a better alternative i reckon.

Yes a diesle will also run on Gas.

yeah diesel/LPG hybrids are an interesting one... they'd run a lot hotter than a normal diesle, you'd probably have to replace a heap of seals and stuff in the engine for it to work properly. still, a close to 95% efficient burn of the fuel has got to be good if they can make it reliable...
