queensland Caloundra Offshore

planning another trip out off Caloundra this Thursday after our success last friday. Planning to launch from the boat ramp at kings beach rocks at 6am so meeting at 5:30am. head out to brays grab a few livies if we can troll them out to the blinker in the hope of something big then throw some plastics for snapper and maybe drop a livie for a HOLD on lol The more the merrier.

Lee, how often have you launched from that boat ramp?

What is the ramp like etc...

as i heading there on my honeymoon and want to take the boat (13ft tinny). ease of launch/retrieve, is surf a problem at that ramp etc.....

Dave its fairly protected there, loads of 12-16ft tinnys launch there and head out to the close in reefs. I have not launched the yak there yet but cant see it being a problem

how far out is the blinker? i am restricted to 2nm as i don't have an epirb

4klms from shelly beach so about 3.6-3.8klms form direct land id say

I think this has been asked before but do you need to have saftey gear like flares, epirbs and v sheets if you go offshore in a yak?

If I had a slightly bigger yak I would be sick enough not to attend work but not quite sick enough not to go fishing. Going to have to pass but wish I could make it. I have not been offshore since I moved here from darwin.

You only need epirb if ure more then 2nautical miles offshore and Flares well i dont think its compulsory but i'd carry 1 of either night or day depending on what time just in case, a V sheet could be a good thing to have, Im pretty sure its not compulsory though except the epirb if ure over 2nm offshore (or from closest land)

Confused from what I read you're sort of use to heading offshore aren't you? You'll be right mate. The current out there is no worse than the current near bribie (in fact it was a lot less when we were there)

yeah im semi experienced with the offshore thing i'm more or less concerned with 15-20 knt westerlies and current combined on just paddle power alone however i'm stupid enough not to care at all

Confused forecast is a windy morning dying off to 6 knots by 10-11am. although the morning should be quiet like usual meaning no wind all day

Got my 5.5" damiki bings today.. hopefully they'll hook a few quality snapper

Also got my Daiwa Steez 103H (JDM).. just need some line and a rod to put it on:P

mate im seriously tempted just so i know what are you guys doing, bait? sp's are there surface action expected? will i be expected to bring anything special

We'll have bait tubes to keep some live bait alive. Hopefully we can pick some of these up along the way, and start trolling them around and using them as live bait. We'll be using plastics on the snapper, we were catching them on floaters/midwater plastics like 1/8 or 1/6 oz (20 metres of water with current - they dont hit the bottom) This tactic was picking up the snapper showing on the sounder in the 4-8metre range.

We didn't see any surface bust ups, but did see some bait fish getting harassed.

Hopefully we can pick up a kingy/cobia/mack or tuna on the live baits. I have all day off so depending on the other guys might head further offshore, or search around for some nice pelagic action once the snapper go quiet. (hopefully they never do:P)

Picked up some 7" plastics to hit those deeper fish... Packing the IMX for those snapper... man that'll be fun :O might only have one crack at them on that gear though

i hope you guys have some serious gear, there are some big kingies around the fairway buoy at times... if anyone feels like bringing home an extra snapper or two i'll happily come and collect it from your place! :kiss:

I'm using 4lbs for the 5" plastics fishing lighter jigheads drifted down...... that serious enough?

for the snapper sure. as for the live baiting the kingies... that'd last about 2 seconds on a good day!

Haha yeah, got a 50lbs overhead for that stuff

8lbs rod for the snappre if my IMX gets hammered too much and then a 15lbs spool for that rod if th e8lbs gets slammed too much

and then I have my 20lbs tuna flick stick incase theres any bust ups.
