    Short Snap Sesh

I was sitting on my front verandah this morning enjoying a leisurely late breakfast and thinking about the snapper closure kicking off next week. I haven’t landed a decent snap for months and usually the port area can be relied on at this time of year as a reliable source of those 40 to 50cm fish that go well on the line and on the plate. Then a number of things occurred to me: it was not raining; it was not windy; I had fuel in the boat; I had pilchards and squid in the freezer; there was a high tide in the middle of the day; I was free all day and the car was available until 3pm. I had no excuses for not going so I grabbed a bit of tucker for lunch and headed for the ramp. I decided to focus on areas close to the ramp that had delivered in the past, sounded around and found fish on the sounder but no hits on bait or plastics for the first hour. Moved up and out of the channel and found some bait schools so deployed the spot lock (love the electric) and was soon pulling in squire at the rate of a fish per cast. Trouble was they were all about 25cm, which seems to be my new limit. Fished up to the tide change and then headed home. So no keepers (hence the “short” snap sesh title) but still an enjoyable outing in great conditions. Maybe the bigger snaps will move in after the closure. Oh, and my new sunnies are fantastic. For all those viewers who enjoy my terrible photos of dead fish on a dirty esky, sorry there is nothing for you today, but here is an even worse photo of a live fish for your viewing displeasure.

    Mackay Fishing

Seeing as how I can’t catch any fish ( which I suspect has at least something to do with having only taken the boat out four times in the last four months) I thought I would post a couple of photos of some of the fish my nephew catch’s up at Mackay. I think I might tow the boat up there this Christmas holidays when we visit the rellies for our annual pilgrimage. Any thoughts on stone guards for the trailer?

    Missing Something?

So I’ve sold a bunch of gear recently cos it wasn’t being used but also to help fund my next project... had a zodiac inflatable when I was a kid (still think I’m 16) and the trailer and outboard sitting idle under my brothers house. 1997 models! spoke to The blokes at Stones Corner Marine and now have a Sea Jay 3.85 Nomad HS on order! Being built at the factory in Bundy I should have it in the coming weeks. Very excited! A new tow bar for the rocknrolla, new hubs, bearings and wheels for the trailer, a new impeller and fuel filter for the outboard and i’ll be off in no time. yew!

Hi Old Scaley While you didn't get any keepers, at least you got out and got onto some. Good job, and good session too. Better than not being allowed to fish because your parents say, "You've got to rest ". LOL Cheers Hamish

I love the photo! If you compare the fish to the boat behind it that is a two metre snapper at least!

    Woodgate

Hi everyone. I’m headed to Woodgate Beach in August for a couple of weeks with the family. I haven’t been there before. We will be land based fishing and I also have a kayak. Can anyone give me any tips on where to fish and if I can pump yabbies etc. Also can you only get to Theodolite creek by 4WD? Thanks everyone

    Pedestal Seat In Plywood Floor

I had a 20 ft Mustang a while ago which was ten plus years old. Was driving through a bit of rough stuff and the drivers seat suddenly gave way. Very scary and dangerous. Make sure any seating is well bolted down!

I'd definitely be heading up to capture some of those beasts. You won't want to come back. I wonder what style hook they use ... haha

I have heard and seen bigger snaps down the river after dark Steve fish where ever the brightest lights are shining on the water. Sometimes they leave a portainer crane down with the lights on on a empty container wharf or any of the bulk cargo wharf again look for the brightest lights shining onto the water.

    Boat For Sale

Just saw this one. Looks okay. Once again though, never seen it, not recommending it, just posting in case someone is looking for this type of boat. cheers Greg https://gandlb.com.au/boat/249542/grady-white-222-cc/

    Hook Eye Poll

This topic makes me realise I’m really old school. Hook eye styles, leaders, reel sizes! I don’t worry about any of that. I cut a bit of line off the end, tie a swivel in between, tie a hook ( any sharp hook) on the end and, hey presto, ready to fish! Used to catch plenty years ago with that method. I just need to find a few spots again! Lol

Love the new style pic. Great to not be one of those suckers that works. Sounds like an entertaining way pass the time to me.

Fishing Hutchies is exactly the same as fishing anywhere offshore so with your years of fishing and boating experience, just go and do it. Comby Point is ok too, just take your time and cross it carefully but most days that you are wanting to head offshore because the weather is good, Comby will be good too.

Thanks I'll keep an eye out for conditions and give it a go in the next few weeks when we get a few good days. Was not planning to go out this weekend, I try to avoid weekends due to the old " no matter where you fish someone always drives over your lines within 5 meters of you" :). Cheers

    What Leader D'you Use?

I buy the Daiwa J Thread mono fishing line for leader. It's very thin for the strength. I just use the cheap stuff for reef fishing. You could lose 30 metres of leader in a day fishing the reef!

    Missing Something?

Thanks Brian. It’s no Ellicatch but I’m excited to have the option. All my mates have big boats (And do biiiig days) so this fills the creek bashing/crabbing/estuary flicking hole in our arsenal. And also a learning experience for me too as I’m planning to do all my own servicing

    Hook Eye Poll

Depends on what bait I’m using and fish I’m targeting but most of the time I’ll go for a offset for using baits like chicken fish yabbies or prawns but if I’m using baits like corn bread and dough I find a non offset is better in size 8-10 works better then a size 6-8 offset hook

I say offset because the hooks I prefer to use are offset.

Thanks for the replies and info.. much appreciated. @ellicat... I think some of those threads are maybe what scared me... Im not sure why but I have some hesitation about going past Comboyuro Pt... must be due to the "crossing a bar" psychology. I've been to the Barwon banks in my boat with no issue but this seems to put me off for some reason.. most likely the moving shallows. With that said a swell of 1 meter ish, and wave height of .5 or less is an ideal combo? How much different is that from 1 meter swell and 1 meter wave height? in terms of comfort? Would a Westerly and or south westerly wind be the preferred wind direction? with an incoming tide? Cheers

    What Leader D'you Use?

Hi Junky, and Cobiaaddict Looks like the Sunline FC Rock is the go. I had to choose quickly as I needed to get back home quickly, but luckily I've also ran out of 15lb leader so when we need that next, I know what I'm getting. I think it's great that the line has such a wide range. Cheers Hamish P.S. I got Black Magic 20lb - it's served me very well. (Or the last one has ).
