Well, no big fellas tonight but thought i might share some interesting pics to help out those just starting out. Headed to a southern bay island late this arvo Pic 1 Find tbe bait ( notice the flat bottom with no reef) ( also notice the vertical lines on the sounder - thats a bait jig, with full string hookups) Pic 2 This is what was actually showing on the sounder - herring - millions of them. Pic 3 The result was a couple of small snapper with the best about 62cm, was hoping for a stonker but not this time. There were definately pelagics present too, our 20 pound leaders were being snipped through like cotton, upgraded some leaders to 40 pound but no takes (typical).... Anyway, just thought i would share, take the time to find the fresh bait and you shall be rewarded.6 points -

There should be a compliance plate on the boat specifying the maximum allowable engine size. I suspect that it doesn’t say 115hp! Don’t exceed the stated maximum otherwise you void insurance and risk everyone’s life every time you go out.3 points -
Shorncliffe Pier
FisherDan80 and one other reacted to Daryl McPhee for a topic
We hit up Shorncliffe Pier yesterday. The weather was fantastic. We chased yellowfin whiting and bream and while we did not get a heap of fish, we left with a feed. Cribb Island worms and yabbies were the baits we used with yabbies being more effective. There were plenty of other legal bream there but we only kept the three. The flood tide up in the shallows did the trick.2 points -
Jeezus nice show on the sounder. Good tips as well. 62cm is pretty good for the southern bay by my standards anyway. It was a cracker afternoon to be out. Maybe my contributation is Fresh Bait, bait from the servo is not going to cut it. Note to self: If @Allnighteris at the ramp rigged up for snapper fishing follow him! Hey mate, camped at north point campground. Fish on the yak was at the spot we went to in rebel-t that time. No bream caught off the rocks, only long toms. Bream all came off the beach on plastics.2 points

Mr @Drop Bear and I went in search of a feed of calamari today. We left Wynnum in Robbie’s boat around dawn and motored across the Bay in pretty good conditions just as the sun came up over The horizon. Another good start to the day, not too cold and not a lot of breeze. The plan was to hit an area where @Drop Bear has been having some success. After a nice run we arrived and started a drift. The squid were playing hide and seek, and they were better at hiding than we were at seeking. So much so that we didn’t didn’t see a single tentacle. @Drop Bear decided to float a pillie out the back under a float, and it wasn’t long before the float took off and after a short fight a nice school Mack was in the esky. So plan A quickly became plan B and we had a fun little session, pulling in 8 before the small packet of pillies ran out. We did get a couple on hard bodies as well, but the bait was the most successful. The wind was stronger than expected and once the tide turned we had wind against tide making for less than ideal planing. We had always planned to do some trolling of spoons on paravanes for Mack’s, so we trolled all the way back to just off St Helena. Robbie did his best to dethrone @kmcrosby78 as the Grinner King of Moreton Bay, catching several on the troll, but we didn’t see another schoolies. We did a bit of sounding around east of St Helena and dropped a few baits (just fillets of whiptails we caught earlier) on some promising territory outside the green zone. We had bites, but the only fish landed was a couple of small squire. Time to head home after another great day on Moreton Bay. Here is dinner on the cleaning table. Thanks again, Robbie. It is great to be back fishing with mates again.1 point -

Round 18 results Thursday September 10 Tigers 24 v 26 Rabbitohs Hmmm. if the Tigers had started the game 5 minutes before the official kick off they would have won…they just ran out of time. Friday September 11 Bulldogs 20 v 32 Sea Eagles The Warriors moved lock, stock and barrel to the land of Oz to enable season 2020 to be restarted….Kudos to the Doggies they have kept the restarted season going, by not throwing their hands up and staying in their kennels… Panthers 20 v 2 Eels yeah well… No one expected the Eels to be any chance, and no one expected the black cats to make it so hard on themselves. Saturday September 12 Dragons 8 v 37 Raiders Raiders won… Titans 18 v 6 Broncos fancy that, this Broncos outfit again enters the club`s history records, first Broncos side to be beaten by the Titans twice in one season. Roosters 42 v 12 Knights Resting Ponga wasn`t the 30 point difference… Sunday September 13 Storm 36 v 20 Cowboys Hmmm.. so the Storm had a few defensive lapses… Bellamy would like that, heading into the finals Sharks 22 v 14 Warriors Warriors, what can one say… they lost another winnable one1 point

Hello. sorry it will be landbased as I don’t have a boat. cheers1 point -
Thanks, but been there, done that, got the cholesterol in my arteries to prove it. Had that vanilla slice after we came back from fishing on the first Saturday.1 point

It holds plenty of bait - take your castnet. Not a lot of boat traffic. Fishing-wise out from the mouth is the place to fish. Plenty of old reports on AFO of threadies and jew from there. The wind will be coming from the east therefore straight up the Colmslie stretch into your face, but it's not looking too strong so doable in a medium sized tinny. Wind against tide in the morning and with it in the arvo., so it'll be calmer as the day goes on.1 point

Boating And Fishing Etiquette
GregOug reacted to AUS-BNE-FISHO for a topic
Hey Drop Bear I do agree with @Old Scaley, but I suppose he should still be aware of what you're doing (or trying to be). I hate the bloody jetskis that come flying by every minute when you're fishing anywhere... But I especially hate when you're fishing landbased, and a boat comes by in the 30 metre 'no wash' zone, making waves you could surf on! All that does is erode away the mud, sand, and anything else Cheers Hamish1 point -
Boating And Fishing Etiquette
GregOug reacted to Old Scaley for a topic
That is annoying, but you could almost forgive them on the basis that they may have thought you were just motoring not trolling. Whereas the clowns who have a whole ocean to pass you when you are anchored or drifting, and still roar past you at full noise within spitting distance really frustrate me. Also the idiots who approach the boat ramp too fast when you are trying to retrieve your boat, setting up an awkward wake. That one seems to be particularly popular with jet skis.1 point -
We were doing a thing at Kangaroo Point where footy players were attempting to kick a goal on a pontoon out in the river. The tide went out and the mud was thick and retrieving the balls became very tricky. There is a lot of junk in the water there. Not where the sand is but more upstream near the Jazz Club end. I was really worried that I would cut myself on some old steel hidden in the muck. We just used a big pole and a net and washed all the balls but it took a lot longer. Now I am always cautious walking in deep mud as I wonder if there junk in there that will cut me up...1 point

I used to go out on the trawlers on the weekend sometimes when I lived at Bribie many years ago. The amount of by catch which went down the ‘****’ chute (that’s what they called it) was terrible. Tonnes of dead fish and crabs. There was a particular small crab called a Ginna Crab which was caught and discarded by the thousands. All that was kept were the prawns and a few large edible fish that were caught in the net. Even all the squid went over the side. But not when I was on board. I used to keep a few two gallon buckets full each time we went out, for bait on my trips to Moreton.1 point

Stop Trawlers In Brisbane River Petition.
Angry51 reacted to Old Scaley for a topic
When I saw this topic, my first instinct was to jump onboard and sign the petition. Then I thought that I should have some evidence to back up that decision. So I went trawling (pardon the pun) through reports and other information online to see what I could find. These were mostly state government reports examining beam trawling, some specific to the Brisbane River and Moreton Bay. The consensus seems to be that they have insignificant impact on the environment and on recreational fishing, although there is not a lot of solid data on rec fishing to base this on. Having fished the mouth of the river for many years now, I haven’t noticed a decline in fish stocks - I used to catch not much and I still catch not much, but can’t say that there seem to be less fish around and there is no evidence to say that is the case. I have fished when the trawlers have been working the area and never seen piles of bycatch floating in their wake, but obviously there is a level of mortality among the bycatch. There is some evidence of damage to the benthos (sea or river bottom) but this is deemed to be insignificant compared to natural and other man-made factors that have an impact. I totally respect your opinion and your right to run a petition @fishingnut, and anyone else who wants to support the petition. After all, it can’t be a bad thing to reduce any pressure on the environment and the fishery, but I always like to know what I am signing and why I am signing it.1 point -
