    Checkmate In The Logan

When @tugger and I were offshore a couple of weeks ago, we were talking about hitting the Logan River to hunt down some elbow slapping whiting. Yesterday the tides and Mark’s shifts lined up so we decided to have a crack. I have only fished the Logan once before, and Mark hadn’t been there for years but did have some recent marks from his son. Mark organised some bloodworms and I provided the tinny and a yabbie pump. We met up at the private boat ramp at Carbrook. It is a really nice facility and the guy running it is very helpful. He gave us a few clues about where we might find a few whiting, then off we went. As we were loading Mark’s gear into the boat he was telling me how he was was going to brain the whiting with his Black Queen and his Black Knight. What’s this? You have to beat the fish in the Logan at chess to take home a feed? Of, course, he was just referring to his secret weapons, the vintage whiting rods that have served him and many others for decades. They are soft slow taper rods about 8ft long matched with small spinning reels with light nylon line, a long trace and a longshank hook. We fished the last of the outgoing tide with not a lot of action. When the yabbie banks became exposed we easily pumped enough to keep us going through the afternoon. The action would not be described as frenetic, but we did assemble a feed. We kept a feed of 5 whiting in the 30 to 33cm range and 4 bream about the same size. There were lots of smaller bream and a few smaller whiting, but we were hunting the elbow slappers. So we may not have completely achieved our goal, but we did work out a few spots and techniques to try next time. Overall it was a great day and I will definitely be trying that area again soon. Thanks for the company, Mark. We will do it again soon. Here is my usual dead fish photo for your viewing pleasure:

    Hinze 16/9/20

Started off cool and bleak for the first few hours.Shrimp were ok with the most productive pots located in 18 inches of water right on the waters edge. The pots that we had left in 4 feet of water were very poor.Worked several areas to produce 40 bass with the entrance to bass bay the better spot. Cheers Ray

Mrs ellicat doesn't even ask if I've caught fish anymore. She just asks if I had a nice day. lol Even when I do catch fish I usually let my companion take them home as I'm usually too lazy to fillet and cook them. Some days I do though.

I would fight it just on principle, I am currently in a dispute with an E-Bay seller for a couple of Tapered BSP threading taps. The seller listed tapered taps in the listing and sent me straight threaded taps. When I contacted them, they didn't even know the difference between the two. I sent them pictures several times and even showing the difference between the two types using a vernier, and they still can't see the difference. Near enough is good enough for them, but not for me. So I will go through E-Bay if they give me any more grief. The total price was only less than $11 for both but the part that annoyed me was waiting several months for it to arrive and then them not knowing the difference and making me jump through hoops to prove it. There are some good sellers on E-bay and they work to rectify any problems, I also ordered a different tap from another seller and that one sent me a cabinet door handle, when I told them, they apologized and did a complete refund within hours. So some sellers are better than others.

Hey Jay jay, Welcome to the forum. I'm really glad you are not letting your lack of English get in the way from finding info about fishing. I have fished in Wivenhoe in a kayak a fair few times. It is pretty easy to get in and fun. There is also a nice picnic spot near the dam wall where you can fish from. I have caught lots of Red Claw there. https://www.daf.qld.gov.au/fish-identification-information/fish-species-guide/fish-species-id-info/profile?fish-id=redclaw-crayfish-freshwater If you fish from the bank you can use worms as bait or if you can get them, small prawns, also known as shrimp, are an excellent bait. I don't think the lure fishing would be too good at that location. Good luck and feel free to ask any questions you have.

I appreciate the effort you have gone to to create this art piece Steve - it must have taken quite an effort to get the macabre lighting just right and I really like the random pattern of fish with some upright and others upside down. You are really honing your craft well ......... Nice work on the fish - always good to get to know a different location. Didn't drop any pots?

Yes, but if you don't do something we will end up being the dumping ground for all overseas crap if we aren't already. What I have noticed is that 3 out of 8 of my E-Bay transactions have some sort of issue.

She is always happy when I come home for a feed. Luckily for me @tugger has a freezer full of quality reef fish from recent trips so left me with the catch of tasty bread and butters yesterday. Weather looks good tomorrow. Might have to have another go somewhere.

    Fire!

Hi all I know it is not strictly related to fishing, but here is a decent fire I made last night for the Cub Scouts - Stoking It Getting the Coals IMG_1029.MOV That's on fire, alright! Some good coals The final product - some scones! This would probably go nicely at an AFO social? Cheers Hamish P.S. @ellicat, would you mind moving this to the 'Outdoors' category - when creating a topic in the category it does not tag properly. Thanks

    Whiting Are Improving

This is the time of the year that the sand and yellowfin whiting really start to kick into gear. There have been plenty of sand whiting in the Southport Broadwater for the landbased angler of late. There have been quite a few bream mixed in with them as well. These ones were from a couple of hours last night using surf worms for bait with the best fish of 36 cm. You don't need a boat to consistently get a feed of fish.

Dunno the baitjunkie ones soz. z-man are good. I have been using the Gobblers ones lately as they are made in Brisbane by an AFO member. https://www.gobblers.com.au/

Nice one. Shame they were a bit of hard work. I went out today with a fella and struggled to get about the same bag. We also put in a fair bit of time trolling for flathead with only 2 unders to show for it. Certainly beats 4 walls though.

The returns process for eBay is really easy. Mrs Scaley ordered a cover for her eReader. When it arrived, it was the wrong size and was not the size advertised. All she had to do was print off a label provided by eBay, drop it off at the Post Office and she got a full refund from the vendor within 3 days. It was only a handful of dollars but she was pi$$ed off on principle.

I Gotta Get Better At Killing Fish

I've been brain spiking and bleeding mine for a while now. I just use the knife in the bait board. It's very quick and imo the flesh tastes better cause the fish hasn't stressed itself out to much. That could just be the placebo effect though.

I'm a foreigner. How are you?I just started fishing.I live in Gatton, about half an hour from wivenhoe. The river is dry around here.I want to catch a bass but I've never seen it.I'm driving around here and there looking for water. This is very hard. If I find a flowing river, it's hard to access because of the farm fence.I don't have a boat. But I have a kayak for rowing.I prefer fishing on the ground, if you don't mind. Can you tell me where I can fish bass in a flowing river with wivenhoe? And I have an udp map of Brisbane.I haven't caught a fish yet.English is difficult and fishing is difficult. Please help me.

Nice work @Daryl McPhee and co. @tugger and I went searching for elbow slappers in the Logan today. Thought we had an upgrade for the whiting leaderboard until I read this. Good to see they are around because I love crumbed whiting.

    Boat Advice

I want to go for a centre console so I am able to stand up and drive. It will be better for my back when I drive the boat. The side console is just a home job with a plastic console. If I get the boat, my school holiday project was to gut the boat, put a custom floor with hatches and a bait tank and convert to a centre console. The boat is extremely wide so might no be a huge deal. I will certainly use food colouring. He just needs to see the hull to determine if it’s able to be used (and out the reef).
