  1. Hi all, Came across a 1 day only sale and thought it would benefit someone who was in the game to buy some new gear so thought I'd create a post. I was also thinking this could be a thread for others to share other bargains/sales that they come across in future that might help others. Please keep in mind site rules around advertising etc so no self plugging or spamming. The below is on sale TODAY ONLY at a 3 letter boating, camping and fishing store. 1000, 2500, 3000 and 4000 sized reels at discount of over $100 with a range of suitable rods for you to select from worth $79 for free. Sent it to an old work colleague this morning at 7am and he ordered by 7:30 Bargain!
  2. I should be sleeping but I just got sent this article from an old work colleague and its kept me up. https://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/national/queensland/woman-s-body-found-after-couple-s-fishing-trip-disaster-in-moreton-bay-20210620-p582jh.html Just tragic news and a tragic story. My condolences to family and friends. I was out on the water today (no pics, didnt catch anything worth it) and we noticed how much activity there was from helicopters and a few police boats earlier on. I was hoping it was just training and thought "nah, can't be another accident". Sorry to come back (after another hiatus) with a debbie-downer post but I want to remind people about safety on the water. That's now 3 lives gone in a few months on the water that many of us play in. Lifejackets! Put them on. Especially when you are in choppy waters in the bay or when on your own. I get it, wearing the big block ones are a pain. Fine. Then go buy the slim ones. Spend $70 to save your own life. Spend another $70 and get 1 for your passenger too.
  3. Lots of pike. Squid will be around and tailor will start showing up as the weather cools down. Haven't fished off the pier in years but fish landbased off wellington point with lures a bit and from my tinny a lot.
  4. Was reading that article this morning. Makes me feel ill thinking about it. I hope for a miracle here too. This is a timely reminder for everyone about boating safety. Sounds like he is a seasoned fisherman and goes to show accidents can happen to anyone. Safety lanyard/deadmans switch at all times when under motor and a lifejacket at all times when fishing solo. Please don't let this happen to you and your loved ones. I hope we never have an AFO member on the news for an incident like this.
  5. Legend Callum. That's the kinda sharing that's in the spirit of what made BFO what is was back in the day.
  6. Good to hear you are back on the water Ray. How did the new knee hold up?
  7. Great fish and pics Callum and great to see Greg is doing well too! Those coral trout look massive! I'll have to give you a buzz on some landbased tips for when I'm up there for work soon!
  8. Is the wife shaking her head at you wanting to get out so quickly or is she nudging you to get out of the house and out of her hair? Good to see you are recovering quickly mate. Those bass at NPD are experiencing separation anxiety
  9. if you are using sx-40's specifically to target pike, I hope you (or your parents) have very deep pockets I have no specific tips on how to chase them, but they are bloody everywhere in the bay and are a pain in the backside. I particularly find them in larger numbers wherever I would expect to find squid. Shallow, clear waters with a weedbed. Small plastics, hardbodies, squid jigs, topwater, chrome - you name it, you'll catch them.
  10. woo! redclaw run in a few months at NPD!!
  11. There's a general lack of public understanding of technology, the internet, how everything works and the art of the possible. Internet and data privacy is a HUGE issue that I would say 99% of people don't understand how it works or what impact it could have on your life. Even BoB's message is missing a lot more info - your phone 100% can pass on lots of information, but it all comes down to how you configure things and it stretches beyond your phone, the telco's and what apps you have installed. Ever wondered why there is "free internet" at shopping centres? Your digital footprint can be amassed by the large tech companies (or even small companies leveraging their capabilities) as you use or come across their products (facebook "like" button on a website tracks you). If you want to read into what data about you IS being collected, have a look at the fed governments data collection laws and usage over the last 6 years. I can tell you - from an AFO perspective - there is a very small team of people who mod and an even smaller admin team. There is no profit being made off AFO - just enough advertising space to cover costs to host our community.... of which at times is actually not even enough. edit - someone knowing what your email address is, is the least of your problems. It's kinda like knowing someones house address - but not knowing the name of the person that lives there or who owns it. The information is useless without context - the thing to ask yourself is - how much context can you get from the information publicly available or handed over?
  12. Great trip Mark. How good is that visibly consistent weather. Your photos show how nice it is out there. Do you also do the head up overnight and launch straight away and then come back to shore and drive home straight away as well? What's your tips on doing that safely considering not falling asleep at the wheel?
  13. Mate - you're crazy. It's the rollout of 5G that is messing with your sounder
  14. If they ever come up with one, we'll leave it up for someone to try it out
  15. Yep - Ray even posts the GPS marks for where he fishes a lot of the time. From when I went with Ray a few weeks ago, there is a bay that was holding bass right up towards the fishing limits near the sailing club. Pretty sure Ray has dropped the marks on those in his posts somewhere.
  16. Welcome to AFO Josh. We used to have a bunch of guys who fished those reaches quite regularly. If you look for posts from old members like Wesfish, Tomca or Shorty - you might find a few useful ones. It does look fishing and amazing though. Great spot to fish from.
  17. I might get a chance to get out and join the crowds on Sunday morning for a bit. Poor tinnie has been dry for almost 3 months now. Will have to check the engine turns over easily at home on Saturday arvo.
  18. I'm lazy and cheap and just chuck a towel on my seat when it gets to be a sunny day. Can't imagine a sheepskin cover would feel inviting when wet...
  19. That is a monster GT! I would happily sit out the rest of the year and not fish until next year if I caught that in SEQ.
  20. You will be able to push the weight of the lure you use up to 30g if you are careful with you cast. Have at least 60cm of line out for your cast and use a long, lobbing cast. Don't put in a ton of power into your cast. Don't flick cast. You will break the tip of your rod. Will you hook a kingfish? If they are there and you can get a cast in front of them, a plastic, hardbody, chrome, jig or topwater will work. Will you land it? If there is any size to it, I'll say you're pushing your luck but it's possible.
  21. Welcome to AFO GJay. There's a TON of knowledge and info here on AFO. There are a few guys that have put in years of learning and effort that are willing to share with those who participate and give back to the AFO community. To help narrow down some more specific info to share, can you tell us what kinda fish you guys are after? Are you after bream? whiting? flatties? jewies? snapper? mackeral? tuna? jacks? The gold coast broadwater, rivers, canals and inshore can be a hard spot to fish - it gets lots of boat and fisherperson traffic so tactics and techniques need to be refined to give you a better chance. I have minimal experience with the offshore scene so won't say too much about that except it seems like when the mackeral are on, you can get them hand over fist. Tugger, Marty and Benno are your guys who have lots of info shared on AFO for offshore/mackies etc. Check out their past posts.
  22. Hey Tae, I'd recommend talking to Duncan and the team at Fishhead. They are only online these days but he does have a warehouse where you can see and fee the rods down at the gold coast. You're going to need deep pockets as rods with specs like that at Fishhead will get ~$1200.
  23. I've found soaking a cotton ball in vinegar and leaving it on the contacts over night cleaned off my green corrosion pretty easily. Then I kept up with spraying lanox/im6 on the contacts after each fishing session and that has kept it clean since.
  24. Congrats Brian!!! Finally got the legal snapper off the list. Now they'll come flooding in mate.
