Can you believe it, the weather is mint offshore, it is the weekend, the almanac is good, and I have decided to give it a miss? I could not justify going out and catching more fish when I already have a full freezer. I must be sick or something.

I was going to say the same thing. Looks like a large mouth to me. Great report Wazza. Some quality jewfish. It is funny, when they increased the size limit to 75 everyone complained and said they would never catch a legal fish. Many years on and there are quality fish being caught. that spottie is a ripper for the bay.

Hi. I have fished Amity from the shore many times. You rarely catch something legal, but there are plenty of fish there to keep you interested. That said I know @straddiebrad picked up a ripper snapper off the end of one of the rock groins at the camp grounds in section A. Amity offers a range of fishing and has pretty deep water accessible from the shore. I have broken the area into 3 sections. Section A has a few sections as well. The rock groins can offer some good small reef species, like snapper and Moses perch. You can also successfully work a squid jig over the sand and grass sections in between. On a good day you can pick up some small flathead and bream working a plastic over the sand and grass Lots of people fish from the jetty but I do not rate it since the sand has reduced the depth it is good, late dusk and night to chase squid on the right tide For kids though you can put a small hook on and fish under the lights and catch endless butter bream They are ok on the chew cooked whole. The last section to fish here is the end of the old boat ramp and to a lesser extent the rock wall at the park You can fish bait here or plastics. I have caught some nice pan sized snapper here On it’s day you can stand on the end of the ramp with a slug on, cast out let it sink and the spin it back quickly and pick up endless bonito. Section B The rock wall section. There are several streets that end at the rock wall giving access Beware the neighbours think they own the shoreline and get pretty cranky if you try and rock hop down the wall. It can be fun to fish this area but stick to the slack tide times. It can be frustrating with the snags here but it offers a lot of reef species. The channel comes in close here and offers depths of 15m I have caught legal snapper, grassy sweet lip and tusk fish here. On a northerly wind the bait gets pushed into the wall and can have long tailed tuna within casting distance I personally have not caught one, but boy it is exciting trying to, with bust ups metres from the shore Section C This is where the rock wall meets the beach. It offers the reef species casting back along the wall and where the sand meets the rocks. It can be very productive there. There can also be some very nice bream and tarwhine here on bait and plastics The beach offers some fun with a tiny whiting hook, with many whiting and bream available to catch On its day if you are lucky, you can spin up schoolies and spotty mackerels, so make sure you always have a few slugs in the tackle box I have caught them on two occasions there. I hope that helps. Tackle on the island is expensive and there is not a huge choice, so make sure you have sufficient before you catch the ferry across I love Straddie and Amity if you have a car there are some awesome fishing opportunities over at Pt lookout Good luck and have fun

Are you taking about using artificial frogs or live or dead frogs. I would check the regs if you are planning to use them live. At least in Queensland they are not allowed as bait. They used to be the gun bait for Barra before they banned their use.

Yeah reading the discussion paper I can understand the need for changes. When I first got up here I could not believe the possession limits for Nannygai. That said I was not catching fish under 60cm and most were in the 70s. So a few fish is plenty. These changes will impact the guys with the smaller boats that fish closer in the nursery. that said I do not agree with their statement that it is just a 10% change. (9 to 4 possession) That assumes that fisherman are catching or targeting 50% small mouth and large mouth. Not my experience in the north here. 9 is a ridiculous possession limit in my opinion, to me does not represent good stewardship. You can say the same with Trout as well at 7 however for someone that only gets a couple of trips a year I can understand it but for people that can pop out all the time and catch 7 per person is incredibly high.

The fisheries are requesting feedback from fishos in QLD regarding a few proposed changes. Banning opera house pots, changing crab pot requirements, splitting the combined in possession limits of crimson and saddletail snapper (small and large mouth Nannaygai), and management around black jewfish. Not many factors effect me apart from the changes Nannygai. I originally did the survey and was a bit harsh because they did not include the proposed size change in the survey. Ready online I was not the only one unable to work it out. It has since been pointed out to me that it was available here but they forget we are not all public servants and not familiar with their structure and nomenclature. For me if they where not going to include details in the survey the document should have come before the survey button and a lot more obvious That said I can understand the need to change the management of Saddletail Snapper I personally do not take crimson snapper as I think they are an inferior eating species. one problem with Nannygai and Lutjanidae fish is they suffer from extreme baratrauma . Studies on fingermark by the NT fisheries found that there was a very poor survival rate of fingermark caught deeper then 5m deep. Last minute decision to go hit up the Jungle Perch in the local creek between the rain. I had fished with Declan a few times and he had not been successful. The rain had brought out a bit of flow and silt in the creek and the fish where on. Declan got his first followed by 20 more and I got some as well. Not bad for a couple of hours.

Yeah I use the trim tabs all the time. I have my weight in the boat a bit to the port side. That way if I am to use a tab, it is the port one and does not effect the transducer. Are you going to get a bow mount leccy?

Do you have a kayak? Most of the small creeks in Strathpine area hold bass. Fish then early morning of evening. Not the same size as the one you got but still a lot of fun.

They are pretty similar boats. Mine is a 671 cruiser and Mark’s is a 651 cross over. You would have to get the measuring tap out to tell the differences. There is no difference in the fishing area just a tiny bit more space in the cab. And the paint job is excellent.

I have not seen the Stats from fisheries here. But from a layman’s perspective they do not seem a rare occurrence. I am not sure but I feel we may be influenced by the plight of sharks in other regions around the world. They say they are an essential component to the ecosystem but it certainly feels a little one sided.

Yeah I have fished Linden banks a few times and the sharks are generally a problem for us there. We did manage a nice dogtooth tuna at Christmas. We have not christened the flats rods yet. After Jasper the water was so dirty. At Christmas the boys and I spent 2 days out there with pretty poor results. The first day we would have boated 40 medium Red bass and the same number paddle tails. So we gave up and moved south to try and get away from them. I have not caught anything of quality out there apart from the doggie. What boat do you have? I picked up a 671 Mclay cruiser 18 months ago and mounted a min kota shortly after. Really enjoying it.

Hi John and welcome to the site and Oz. NSW requires a fishing licence and you get that online for a day, a week or a year QLD only requires a permit/license for impoundments that have been stocked. Search Stocked impoundments permit plenty of great fishing on your way up the coast both in the salt and the fresh. Australian Bass and estuary perch as good options in freshwater and from the bank on lures. Do not need an overly big outfit. 6lb line. in the estuaries have a look to videos on Flathead, bream and whiting As you get further up the coast in Queensland you can start to get some bigger species to target from shore Just get yourself aware of our friendly crocs Barramundi are good, mangrove jacks as well finally when you make it up to Cairns, my new neck of the woods lol me up and I may be able to get you out onto the reef

Yes, it makes you think twice before jumping in to cool off. yeah there is no shortage of sharks up here and hear from @ellicat that is the same in the Bay as well. So hard when you are struggling to find the fish and get a bite , only to have the first one smashed 2m off the bottom. No point putting another bait down to waste another fish. I think the only reason Alex got his red up was that I had a shark on the line in the rod holder as he brought it up.

We got out on Monday, which is probably the last chance for Declan this trip north. The weather for the next week is not looking good unless you want to wind surf. We head out wide off Cairns. It was lumpy at first and only got better from there. We have been testing the fishing against the almanac. The day was set to be a poor day with one bite period which was average. We fished the morning bite and we did manage some activity but like the last Wednesday the sharks where insane. I have never seen sharks this bad.. normally you get taxed after a fight. This trip they where onto our fish a few metres into the fight. We had several sharks that managed to hook themselves and 45min fights ensued trying to get our braid back, fighting them and driving them off. I had 2 such fights and Declan had 3. Has to be said we where spent after. Personally I can not imagine why anyone would choose to target sharks. We worked and moved around trying to get away from the sharks and not waste to many fish to them. We managed 1 Red and 9 Robinson’s Sea Bream, 2 trout and a milf and a spangled. On a positive note, I really rate the Robos as an eating fish. Right up there with Reds. Such lean flesh. I got my PB with the largest going 67cm.

I have not been active on AFO for a long time, being a long term member and still technically a moderator. Be careful, do not try and hi-jack someone’s post, especially, someone that is not active. But seriously we took 7 reds and 6 Nannygai home for 3 families, hardly exceeding our possession limits. But from the fisheries own stats the stocks of trout and nannygais are solid and the very reason we have the ridiculously high possession limits. One could argue people fishing SEQ are doing a lot more damage regularly fishing and taking Snapper that are under considerable threat and struggling with low recruitment rates.
