  1. Huge thanks to @Drop Bear for taking my wife and I out fishing yesterday! We had such a blast! After numerous wrong turns trying to figure out how to drive on the wrong side of the road we finally made it to Drop Bears place 40 minutes late, but once we got out on the water conditions seems great to us Canadians. Neither of us got seasick so that was also a bonus! When we got out to the spot we threw some eel down on hooks that were 100 times bigger than anything I have ever used, and let them sit in hopes of catching a shark. We decided that my wife should get the first shot at reeling one in because every time I take her fishing she catches the biggest fish. After about 45 minutes we had our first bite! And just as predicted it turned out to be a nice one! After another 45 minutes of fighting and some seriously tired arms, my wife managed to reel in a nice bull shark! We gave it a quick measure (1.8m) and released it to grow into a bigger one for the next time we are back in Australia! Once we returned to our spot and put our eel bait back down it didn't take long for us to get another bite! This time it was my turn! Mine was just over 1m and still put up more of a fight then most fish will in Canada. We were super excited to catch a smaller shark so we could take it home and try some fresh shark for the first time. To top off the day we had a bite that was an absolute zinger! All I could see was the line flying off the spool faster then I have ever seen! We were informed it was too fast to be a shark. Unfortunately it broke off and we never got to see what it was. All in all we had an amazing time fishing with Drop Bear yesterday and it will definitely be one of the highlights of our trip here to Australia! Thanks so much for taking us out!
  2. We are heading all the way up to cairns! I thought I remembered watching a youtube video on some guys fishing in the brisbane river for them at night. Maybe that while be a fish for another trip if there not that easy to catch. I watched some guys fishing for them in the river at night too, but it was not Hook Line and Sinker. It was some redneck looking duo. Thats what have me the idea. @Old Scaley I might have to take you up on that! I'd be happy with any kind of fishing, does not have to be threadfin. Daytime is fine by me. I'm on vacation, I I understand the importance of cocktail hour! haha
  3. That sounds amazing! I just copied and pasted this all to my "Important Australian fishing Info" document! This is some seriously good info! Thanks so much! Mangrove Jacks are close to the top of my list for fish to catch while I'm there! I've read a lot about them being a really fun fish to catch. I am also excited to try using live bait. It sounds and looks so easy. We are only allowed to use certain types of bait here and the only live baits we are allowed are earthworms and leeches. Are there any Threadfin around in December? I've been watching some youtube videos on them and it looks like they can get to be a decent size and are a cool looking fish. I am already getting super excited about this trip! can't wait to check some more species off my bucketlist! In another week I will we able to ice fish here! By the time I get to Australia I'll be whiter then a mayonnaise sandwich with the crust cut off! You better believe I'll be bring a jumbo sized tub of sunscreen! haha
  4. My wife and I are coming to Australia in December for my sisters wedding. We are going to be staying in Southport for a week before we start heading up the coast, and I would like to get some fishing in. I am from the smack dab middle of Canada and have pretty much zero experience fishing saltwater. So if anybody would like a fishing partner for a day from Dec 8 -14 let me know! I will be bringing 1 or 2 medium sized rods along with me for jetty and river fishing along the way, but would love to go with a local and get some local expertise for my first time out fishing saltwater.
  5. Thanks @Simo68! That article was helpful in explaining gutters. Im going to Youtube how to spot a gutter and I'm sure I'll be able to get the jist of it. These are thinks I never think about as a landlocked fisherman. Tides and ocean currents are a whole new ballgame to me.
  6. I'm just lurking on here trying to figure out how to saltwater fish for my trip to Oz in December. we don't have much surf fishing in the middle of Canada. Guess I'm going to have to go and watch a bunch of videos on how to spot a gutter. I watched your video @Simo68 and have no idea what im looking at! haha I cant speak on behalf of hedgy but that is some good info Simo. definitely some good pointers for me to start googling.
  7. Nice! Everyone wants to catch a giant, but I would be happy some that size! No such thing as by catch for me. I'll be happy with whatever I can reel in since I really have not done any saltwater fishing. Thanks for the pointers on Straddie! we are wanting to rent an AirBnB somewhere for the second week of december, and stradbroke is at the top of the list. So hopefully I can convince them to stay around the Point Lookout area. That would be the dream to do both! We have some friends in the Atherton Area, but we are undecided if we will make it up that far yet or not. It is the same way around the cities here. We are hoping to get out of the city for a week or 2, but I am hoping to get out a couple times while we are stationary in Brisbane because that will be my best chance of doing some scouting and planning ahead for where to fish. And really I'll be happy with anything i can catch.
  8. Nice GT @Drop Bear! I would be happy with any size of GT. Are they more common to catch at Manly then on stradbroke? And do you fish the rocks on the NE side of straddie for the GT? From some google mapping that looks like the best point to me. Ok that is not to far of drive. We are planning on heading north for a bit. I'll have to see if I can tear my wife away from the ocean for a day to go for some Barras! haha Coral Trout is delicious! I've eaten Coral Trout that my wife caught there. But is was a Hens party so I did not get to go. That is a good looking Trout @aussie123! So many options so little time!
  9. The problem is you have to many options! haha I want to catch everything. If the Barramundi are to far north I'll probably focus on salt water. This is 99% of what ive read about people catching in and around Brisbane! and what I figured I'd be fishing for. I caught bream on a hand line the last time I was in Australia, but I would not complain about catching them either. I am just excited to catch something different then my normal pike, walleye, and trout. Is there any chance of catching a GT from shore? They is also on my Bucket List, but I didn't realize that they came that far south! I would definitely have to upgrade my setup to get one of those in! I'm for sure going to be soaking up everything I can on this site in the next 6 months! This is a great site.
  10. Guess I'll bring a little bit off everything. I don't know what I want to target either. EVERYTHING! haha A shark is definitely at the top of my list. but I'm game for anything. I think I'll probably bring along one spinning rod and a fly rod just for fun. and then a tray of soft plastics and a tray of hard and some terminal tackle for the live bait and see what I can catch. Is there any species in particular you guys would recommend I try and go for? I would like to try for a barramundi as well as I feel that is a fairly iconic Australian fish. Thanks @Drop Bear I well definitely send you a message closer to December and see if we can work out a time to go fishing!
  11. Thanks guys! Stadbroke is definitely on the bucket list for the trip! We aren’t the nightlife kind of people. So straddie sounds like our kind of place! Thanks for the heads up about your holidays! We are looking to book fairly soon so hopefully that won’t be an issue. Already been looking on Airbnb scoping out some places close to some jetties and points. :-p Thanks Drop Bear for the offer! I am planning on bringing some fishing gear along, what would you guys recommend I bring? From what I’ve read it sounds like a lot of guys use live bait around there? That makes it easy for me to pack! But casting is a lot more fun. What size of reels are you guys running over there too? I have a pflueger president xt 40x as my biggest reel would that be big enough for threadfin, Jews, snapper and the like? I’ve caught fish the same size as them around here, but I don’t think freshwater fish put up as much of a fight as their saltwater cousins. sorry about all the questions!
  12. Thanks! We will have a rental vehicle so if I have to drive a couple hours to fish thats fine by me. Any good recommendations for areas to stay in along the coast for good shore fishing? I think we are going to be renting a beach house somewhere within a couple hours of brisbane for the first week.
  13. What section of this forum would be the best to message on come closer to December? I live in Rosthern, Saskatchewan a small little town on the prairies. Still some great fishing around, but completely different then what I imagine its like fishing there!
  14. Hello all, I'm coming to Brisbane for the month of December for my sisters wedding, and I going to be doing some fishing! Since I am about 20 hours from the nearest coast line I have done very little saltwater fishing in my life and am wondering if any of you kind fellows could help a fellow fisherman out. Any ideas on pointers, spots to try, or what gear to use would be very appreciated. Or if you want a fishing partner I would be happy to tag along on any type of fishing expedition! I would love to catch a shark while I am there, but would be happy catching any type of salt or freshwater species. I would also like to catch some mud crabs while I'm there if anyone is into that! If any of you are on Instagram give me a follow @Esox_angler and send me a DM so I can follow you back! Thanks, and tight lines! Aaron
