Thanks for the report Hamish, I was down there late Sunday arvo for a few snapps and a flathead plus the damn tailor that are everywhere lately.
Time to give the Bris River a spell and sus out some other grounds I used to fish in the 70's and 80's.....one spot threw up a 88cm snapp last Friday night I heard....land based as well.

Went for a flathead fish this morning ,but my Lowrance side scan  told me to forget the flathead and fish for something else.
Ended up getting a nice feed of threadies off the sand in 1.2 m of water. Jess those things go on light gear. Hopefully the photos come up ok as they were beautifully conditioned clean fish.

    team south
    Flathead 510mm
    Threadfin 1030mm  ,930mm and 965mm
Gave all the fish barring 1 Thready away ,  which I’ll be having with some nice fresh salad tonite.
    regards

Hey, ive been spinning SEQ rods for quite some time and heres my take on it.
Ive got through and tested many difference rods and reels rock fishing and this is what ive found,
    - if your after something longer, daiwa demonblood 932 pe 2/4 is great, has a great look, heaps of power and you can cast really far. great cast weight and youll have no trouble getting lures out there and working them
    - another great rod that is a bit shorter is the daiwa saltist hyper v2 M-OVER 80 pe 2/4, this is another great rod that has heaps of power and is great for casting on the rocks, sometimes that 8ft - 8ft 3 is all you need to get far out and is not too heavy or too long, it wont make you fatigued or super tired and youll still be able to cast all day without having too many issues.
    - and finally its a 7ft 6 rod but probably one of my favourites off the rocks, daiwa supercasta. an amazing rod that can land tuna mackeral to snapper and jewies. its a 5-10kg rod as well if im not mistaken but casting that is so nice. Another rod ive found similar to the supercasta is the daiwa tatula 762 7-15kg. Beware its a 7-15kg rod but feels like a 4-8 or a 5-10 however out of all the rods ive used under 8ft the tatula casts the furthest by about 10-20m. Ive casted further with tatula than i have with some 8ft3 rods ive used. That being said overall i do prefer the supercasta

Reel wise, i do find longer the rod the bigger the reel youd want to balance out the weight. 5000 would be perfect for any of the rods but if you go with a 8ft 6 rod or over might wanna stepup to a 6k. Daiwa saltist mq is a great reel along with daiwa bg mq, and in shimanos range the stradics would be the best.

SEQ depends where you fishing you might get some gts but arent that common. Therell be heaps of tailor and on some days Mack Tuna and Longtails. Along with that will be mackeral.

    Hope this helps.

PS i havent read over it hope its understandable lol

Went out with @Another Wazza today and he was close to negative 10 with the grinners. Very quiet day that started with a 37 snap to Wazza on a plastic. After that the most exciting thing was loading up the Sabiki jig with some lollipop yakkas and a few pike.

    Hi all,
I was on a holiday down in Victoria for a week (went for one fish for trout but no luck) and got back last Thursday around midnight. Decided to have a rest on Friday but Saturday morning @Cavvy and I tried a spot on our kayak. We launched at about 5am and arrived at the spot by quarter past, just before the sun rose. We spent the next four hours flicking some shallow diving hardbodies around but unfortunately, we did not catch any threadfin. There was plenty of bait jumping but I guess the fish weren't hungry, so we will have to get them next time.
    Stats of Trip:
    Tide: 9:30AM, .6M, Low.
    Moon Phase: 25%
Lures Used: Zerek Pyra and Megabass Oneten R
    Air Pressure: 1015
    Humidity: 83%
Overall Success Rate: 30% - first session on the river this holidays
The next session was today with @Thorbjorn Hale at The Port, on Thorbjorn's tinny. We launched at around 9am from a very crowded POB boat ramp, and after we got away first thing on the agenda was catching some livies. It wasn't long before we had a fair few mullets gathered so we went out to the wharves and started fishing.
It was awesome weather, and it was quite flat for as far as I could see. On my first cast my live mullet remained untouched for a fair amount of time before line started screaming off of my reel. Thorbjorn picked up my rod while I wound in my soft vibe and the fish took a good run. I started the fight and the fish was taking some decent runs and had some good headshakes. It wasn't long before I had a nice 60cm or so snapper on the deck of the boat, which we were both happy with (and I was regretting not buying some ice for the esky). After a quick photo we released the snapper and got lines back out.

    Snap
Following this, we each caught a decent sized stingray, but after that the bite went very quiet, so we decided to go and chase some livies at the Poo Chute and try again. We were successful with the herring (despite my substandard cast netting), but back at the spot we couldn't lose a bait, apart from Thorbjorn catching a small shovelly. We moved again, and at this spot we each pulled in a catty, which wasn't a great sign. As we were moving though, we noticed a boat was hooked up to a decent fish. We waited until we saw it, and sure enough the gold of a thready emerged, so it was good to see someone was having some success on the soft vibes.
We chased a bit more live bait which was fun and had a quick rest before anchoring on the edge of the main channel around the Clara Rock area. Unfortunately for us, this didn't equate to any fish, and the only action was a few nibbles and plenty of waves from the Moreton Island boats. At about five, we decided to call it quits and we drove home. Overall, it was a great day with the weather staying flat for basically the entire day, thanks again for taking me out Thorbjorn!
    Stats of Trip:

Welcome to the forum. I would recommend Penn Prevails as I have a couple of mates who have them and they rate them highly, the 9’6 is supposed to cast very well with heavier lures.

Nice work Hamish.  That snap would have been a very tasty addition to the plate and at 60cm they put up a good account for themselves.
We went out yesterday.  Not much run = not much fun.  Hit Harries and thanks to the benefits of livescope could see there was SFA of any size around at least two of the wrecks.
Went down to Peel west and nothing on the artificial and then had a look at the wreck just near the channel marker - probably 6 or 7 fish over a metre swimming over and around the wreck but they werent tempted by anything.
The only thing biting all day were bloody grinners.   At least it was a nice day.

My son spent some time fishing over at Amity Point without me.
He wanted to target pelagics landbased and he certainly produced the goods. He was targeting bonito on small metals next to the boat ramp. He was  doing okay when a ripper of a Spanish mackerel grabbed the small lure. He wasn't fishing with wire and managed to hook it squarely in the mouth. He also didn't have a gaff. There was a big crowd of onlookers watching him land the fish and several boats returning back to the ramp with donuts. It could be a long time before he gets a bigger one landbased.

For spinning off the rocks I would opt for 8-15kg in 8'6" to 9' and I would run 15kg 8 or 9 strand braid for the thin slick casting capabilities.
Longtails are not difficult to land off the stones if you can keep them from going around a rock..
Mackeral are straight forward and seldom a problem if you don't get bitten off in the first few seconds.
Jew are not difficult to land, more difficult to find and hook well.
Yellowtail kingfish can be quite difficult over about 80cm because they will run to rock. No chance of landing one over 1.2m in my experience......they used to be common that size in the early 80's before bloody NSW allowed fish traps for YTK....that screwed them within a decade.
Often times you will find bustups 10m outside your best casting distance....not much you can do about that outside of getting a bigger berley trail happening to bring the bait closer.
Avoid getting a setup with line too strong to break off, it is dangerous and not necessary...my heaviest was 24kg line and to break that I had to wrap the line around the gaff to break it...too damn strong.
