What's your best catch on a little bait jig?
Mrs somehow brought in a bonefish on a cheapy $2.50 bait jig a few months ago. Can't remember the exact size but hell it went hard - the saying fun on light hear was very true!

Have also managed to pull in a 30cm school mackeral as well. No idea how the line didn't get snipped.

    Hi,
The boys will love doing this.
there is a thread on poddy traps here. https://www.australianfishing.com.au/forum/topic/18460-poddy-mullet-trap/?tab=comments#comment-725254
I am on the Central Coast. Check the NSW Fisheries regs on the trap.
    https://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/fishing/recreational/fishing-rules-and-regs/perm-prohib-saltwater
I have reverted to  a 3L plastic juice bottle and cut an opening at the top. I have fixed two pryamid sinkers to its base to keep it in place. Although the glass coffee jar works well, its a nuisance to remove the bait.
I originally didnt burley as I the fish were contained in a creek/lagoon and they would bump into it before long......however......I am trapping elsewhere now and I think burleying is necessary to bring them too the trap.
Tips: a sandy bottom near a weedbed is good[they often hide/feed in there]. If no weedbed sandy bottom is still OK.  Little or no wind rippling the surface. Clear water, I think they see the bread better. I find they are easier to trap on a rising tide as they explore the sandflats for food. I think on a dropping tide they have other things to worry about like getting stuck and avoiding predators when they leave the shallows. I have only caught them in the day, but then again I haven't tried at night. {Let us know if you try and how you went}.Polarised sunnies help spot them but with a bit of practice you will see them anyway. Look for flashes in the weedbeds and the ripples they make if you cant see the fish themselves. I use very small pieces of bread-to bring them around the trap. Now the hard part- resist the temptation to go back before   twenty mins- to half an hour and spooking them. If you come back to the trap and there is a disturbance above then its good news. I would suggest setting your traps {I think the boys can have one each} and then spend half an hour rigging up their lines/getting the boat ready. I avoid wearing white [I have absolutely NO evidence, but having seen egrets at work on baitfish they may be a bit shy of a large white biped bearing down on them. In the trap I put 20-30 one cm squares of white bread-approx half to two thirds of a slice. Small pieces will come out of the trap but not take the school away like a big piece will. I haven't tried chook pellets so I cant help there. Don't put it too deep-water above opening around 15-30cms works well. ie shin to knee deep max.
Be prepared to try a few different places-while you may see poddies, sometimes they just wont go in the trap but once ONE goes in they others seem to follow. Also you will find that at some places small bream and  toadfish fill your trap and the mullet are scared off. When that happens I move on and dont bother going back there.

I didn't know they were still making them. I have an old Ryobi I use on the bait jigging rod, although it is a little rough these days.
I had a quick look on Mr G and he said they are still making them and are available from overseas online, with the Virtus 5000 available locally. Seems they are on the clearance tables though.

I had a very frustrating morning session up at the Whitsundays in a little blow up tender. drifting along the edge of a reef and casting to the structure.
The bite was hot but every decent fish pulled me and the boat into the snags...
I even tried anchoring up but the current was running parallel to the reef and the fish still pulled me and the boat in. Oh well was a great day all the same.

    G'day @Jimmyjack
Thanks for the tips. Now that it's Winter, I've been focusing my efforts on bream. Hopefully I can catch one on a lure before the end of the Winter. I will definitely have to put the effort in if I want to come any close.
    Hey SuperHans
Yes, it will. Even if it is just a small-ish fish (say, 40cm catfish), it can pull your kayak a bit. It is not hard to keep control of the yak when there's two in it though (one paddling, one fighting the fish), but may get a bit trickier when you're solo. It comes down to rod work, and positioning, in my opinion. I don't have an electric motor, so we just paddle.
    Cheers Hamish

    Hi Hamish,
I haven't fished from a kayak so forgive me if I am wrong. If you lock the drag up and a cod/big jack grabs your live bait, wont it pull the kayak towards the snag? Maybe you have an electric motor to keep you in position, use an anchor, or just paddle backwards like crazy?
    Just curious how it works

This morning I was planning to go out to my older brothers boat with my family and help him clean it up and get it ready for summer atm its moored in a shallow part of a estuary depth is between 2-3 metres max . long story short close to last year my brother bought a decent sized cruiser and it needs a bit of TLC for trips and general use and lately we have been getting it ready putting in fridges removing carpet etc .

Anyways we get to the boat I find myself doing nothing I don't usually fish there because its not a great spot I always leave my cheap setup there though Shimano Sienna 2500 matched with a 2-4kg Aird spooled with 6lb mono or the spare spool with gliss. I steal one of my brothers prerigged bright pink 3 inch plastics and start covering ground. 5 minutes in I get 40-42cm odd flattie brain spiked it bleed it and put it in a esky after that I didn't really do much didn't really feel like fishing as I knew I pretty much fluked that catch a few hours pass its a hour or so till sunset and I decide  to have another flick again this time 10/15 minutes in I get a bigger flathead 5cm or so bigger a lot more fat/muscle though I've barely hooked it soon I see the hook is just on the lip of the fish I losen the drag right off but keep a little tension so it doesn't spit the hook . after that I managed to land it I do the same as I did to the first fish and put it in the esky and call it a day. overall not a bad sesh considering I wasn't  planning to fish .
    conditions
no wind every now and then you would get the slightest breeze
    full sun no rain
    2 days before new moon
first fish was just after bottom tide
second fish was on last 2 hours of run out
    temp 17-18 degrees
barometric pressure rising all day since yesterday pressure went down a tad bit in the arvo
    first fish 30.15
    second fish 30.12
    water clarity super clear
note I think this time was a fluke I did see a lot more baitfish then usual this time and this time there was less seaweed for me to get tangled on . usually there is no signs of baitfish the bream and flathead there I've caught are usually tiny or barely legal . this time I did paddle around in the dingy and did see a lot of small flathead lying in the water I also spooked quite a lot of flathead paddling in the dingy

Several months back I was thinking about getting the "sharky model" but I was going to get one based on the fact that if any parts broke or  needed replacing then I would most likely have to throw it in the bin, as dealing with Chinese companies selling cheap products from past experience can be problematic at best.  I looked at a few vid's on youtube where the guys in the USA have bought some to try out and they said they weren't too bad (considering their price point) but no long term reviews.
In the end I opted out of getting one as the reliability of it would have always been on my mind when fishing and just ended up buying another Penn reel. Actually I bought the cheapo Abu reel first but returned it straight away after noticing the flex in the reels neck and then bought the Penn.

There has to be something said about a "One Year Incredible Total Peace of Mind Warranty" vs a 10 year warranty.

I’d stay far away from these reels many people like Alan hawk tackle advisors and many regular fishos don’t have anything nice to say about these reels . Most of these reels are made out of cheap weak parts . ATM for spinning reels the most reliable brands are daiwa Shimano penn not in any order there are a few good spin reels outside these brands such as  1 or a few by okuma fin nor ATC and other brands but for the most part the top 3 daiwa Shimano penn are the most reliable and best value for money when it comes to spin reels . As for a bait runner I’d have a look at the okuma ceymar and see if they are any decent if they aren’t decent you’ll most likely have to buy a shimano if you want a reel that will preform well and last

Never used shimano kairiki 8. I’ve only heard negative feedback and bad reviews I’d stay away from it if I was you . But try it if you wish it might be decent but I wouldn’t risk it . The 20lb/PE 1.7 tasline breaks at 34.7lbs and it’s diameter is 0.225 the 30lb tasline breaks at 49lbs and it’s diameter is 0.229 . I’m pretty sure this is why they measure heavier lines in PE because it’s more accurate PE 1.7 from what I’ve found is actually 30lb not 20lb . So if I was you I’d be looking at getting PE 1.7 braids or tasline 20lb as they are actually 30lb braids not 20lb hope that helps
