  1. Are opera traps (or any bait traps) legal to use in tidal waters in Queensland? https://m.facebook.com/FisheriesQueensland/posts/1537249216287443
  2. Never caught a jack, but I've been busted off several times at Kerkin Road Weir and Coomera river weir by something feisty with a lot of get up and go.
  3. More details. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-01-18/parks-and-wildlife-investigating-croc-sighting/101868516
  4. https://parks.des.qld.gov.au/park-alerts/22697 Keep an eye out if you're in the area around North Straddie.
  5. Maybe just focus on getting out and fishing whenever you can at the moment, enjoy your time on/by the water and concentrate less on specific species until you're older and have more transport options. If you're dead set on catching a jack, jump on your bike and go and explore new ground in some smaller creeks that are less fished. Just have a look in YouTube and you'll find plenty of spots. They won't come to you, you need to put in the time and effort to find them.
  6. Yep, my cousin followed me to the pin on his jetski because he wasn't confident avoiding sand banks. I drove as if I was a jet ski and maintained 60+m from all anchored boats or the shoreline when required. He zipped past anchored boats with just 5-10m clearance. I stopped and told him the rules. His response was that fisherman and boats shouldn't block the channels. I told him I was fishing for the rest of the day and he could make his own way home.
  7. I thought that you were doing to say that the candy man appeared, as that slimey character can access his candyshop mansion via saltwater creek. Glad the hoons got done. I was fishing here https://maps.app.goo.gl/TLqS4CvA4XhupaPH6 recently and had to duck into the mangroves for cover as an inconsiderate old fart on a jetski with full face helmet and protective gear tore up the 3-4m wide creek as fast as he could go. He didn't even notice that I was there. Felt like gathering all the dead logs and branches and creating an obstacle to make his high speed exit from the creek a little more interesting, but decided against it.
  8. That type definately won't be allowed in salt water. Probably won't be permitted to use it in fresh water either as the opening is not rigid. See https://www.qld.gov.au/recreation/activities/boating-fishing/rec-fishing/rules/equipment Best of going to your local tackle store and buying suitable pots there. Rules vary state to state, so be aware if you travel into NSW to fish.
  9. Bream for the southsiders. Measured horizontally, not diagonally like a TV
  10. Might be safer, and cheaper to take the motor off when not in use and store it in your garage or shed. Or take the cowling off after each use and put a bucket over the motor (and if you wanna get creative, dress it up like Ned Kelly).
  11. My guess is gates for white water kayaking. Must be somewhere upstream where they can regulate the inflow for this little creek.
  12. Southsider checking in. Couldn't find a brag mat of suitable size, so measured the green case when I got home. I'm going to go with a conservative 100mm for this Tailor. Gotta give the northsiders a benchmark to aim for.
  13. Stayed at Paddy's flat and then the gorge for a couple of nights each. Glad you found the fish. Moved to station creek for final couple of nights and managed some good sized flathead in the shallow creek. Others fishing the beach didn't get anything.
  14. You had more luck than me. Spent a few days last week on the Clarence and landed just one 10cm bass. Got it just as a massive storm rolled in. Saw plenty of fish, but couldn't entice a bite. The waterways were alive though after the floods. At night the frogs were deafening (80+db), and the shallows were teaming with thousands of small baitfish eating the millions of bugs on the surface and the larger fish were smashing the little fish that were too close to the deeper water. Action everywhere but at the end of the line.
  15. @Mylesfisher If you're free Thursday night (10th November), get along to Dougie Burt's seminar which is all about catching jacks.
  16. 7006 according to Doug Bert's YouTube video.
  17. Thanks for the info. Yes it looks to be a Longfin.
  18. Caught this fish (pic attached) this afternoon while flicking soft plastics from the bank in the upper arms of Gregory creek on the west side of Curtis. Never seen one before. At first I thought it must have been a cross between a threadie and a tailor. But did some googleing and it looks to be a Beach Salmon (Leptobrama muelleri). It put up a decent fight for it's size, with plenty of aerial acrobatics. Couldn't find it on the Qld Fishing 2.0 app, so I'm guessing that they're not commonly caught in Queensland? Anyone here caught one before?
  19. Fairly sure that the commercial boats have the yellow/black rego numbers. So 2 different boats from the same operator could have checked the one pot. But the 3rd regular boat might have been looking for a free feed.
  20. Here are the links to a few specific vid's to get you started
  21. Not sure if you have seen any of Rokkit Kit's youtube videos, but quite a few of his videos are filmed at Halfway Island, just north of Humpy. He doesn't fly fish, but has caught trout, tuskies, cod, etc. on lures there, as well as squid on jigs, plus crayfish when diving. Humpy should be similar. If you sail over to halfway for a fish, just be aware that the eastern side of the island is a green zone.
  22. After getting to the end of my last tube of Squidgies S Factor, and suffering a leak due to the tube cracking open and covering nearly everything in my tackle bag, I realised there has to be a better option. Wish list: Leak free container one handed operation and application (sick of holding the tube cap in my mouth while applying, occasionally dropping it in the water and having to chase it down) no need to smudge/smush scent with fingers cost effective small enough to fit in pocket I ordered a 8oz (~240ml) container of Pro-Cure Shrimp Super Gel from Amazon (~$39), and a 40ml silicone travel bottle from eBay (~$15 for 4). Filled up one of the bottles with the Shrimp Gel and went down to Fingal this week. The gel scent is like tomato sauce in consistency, but very sticky. Applying it to the lure was super easy, quick, and can be done one handed. The nozzle extends when squeezing so you can easily and accurately apply along the back of the plastic lure, and retracts into the bottle when pressure is released, keeping the lid clean. This flavour of scent is red in colour and would still be visible for around 15-20 casts before needing another squirt. I didn't have any other scent to compare it to, but this stuff worked a treat! I'd cast a new plastic a dozen times, then add scent and then get hits/hook up within a couple of casts. Fished off the Fingal head rocks, and tweed south wall and caught a handful of good size Dart, dozens of 30+cm Bream, a few trevally (big eye and baby GT's), a moses perch, couple of tailor, butter bream, and 2 eye balls (must have been a few unlucky tailor inspecting the lure too closely). All but 2 fish released. Majority of the fish were caught on 2.5inch BaitJunkie Minnow's in Whitebait/Pink Glow, the rest on a mix of 10-15g metal slugs, 65mm Squidgy's, and a small soft vibe. The fishing was so good that the plastics didn't even need to be worked to attract the fish. I'd add some scent, cast, wait 5-10 seconds then get a hit or hook up almost every cast. Even when half the plastic was chomped off, I'd cast the remnants and still hook fish somehow. At the end of the day I tried half a 2.5 baitjunkie (no tail), and landed 7 more fish before the plastic fell off the hook. A successful trip, plenty of action, and no stinky fingers!
  23. @Ryannnnnnnn Lake Awoonga is the direction I'd be heading. Stay somewhere around Gladstone and fish the dam or the narrows west of Curtis, Port Alma and Fitzroy river. If there is a break in the weather venture outside of Curtis. Just make sure you watch the tides through the narrows, the middle section dries mid tide, so plan accordingly.
  24. @Mylesfisher Here's and old webpage with all you need to know about the seaway. https://seawayfishing.info/ Charts might be outdated, but shouldn't have changed too much. For info on how to use plastic's for snapper offshore see this video. Similar principles will apply for other fish in the seaway, but you might need a larger jughead to get to the bottom because the current will likely run faster than outside.
