  1. Hey Guys, Have just moved to Wynnum and am out on the water most weekends, have a tinny and a yak. I seem to be doing alright with flatties off the yak, but have had no joy at all out in the bay (trawling/soft plastics/livies/pillies). After some tips on locations, lures/baits and target species. Cheers, Koz
  2. Fished the southern bay again this afternoon for a nice little feed on soft plastics. Put the boat in at 2.30pm and fished till the sunset . Ended up with 3 snapper, 3 tailor and a flathead. Tagged and released about a dozen undersized snapper and grassies that I had to sort through to get a feed. Fish on ice now , I’ll fillet them tomorrow morning once they chill down. regards Neil
  3. Hi All. I've produced a report regarding thursday's (29th of september) trip out to the bay chasing snapper and potential mackerel with @ellicat (Brian) and @AUS-BNE-FISHO (Hamish). Apologies for the report being quite late: the new school term and re-adjustment to routine has kept me busy. I've made sure to make the report decent to make up for its lateness. I'd like to greatly thank Brian for providing Hamish and I with the opportunity to get out on the boat in the bay. I'm not 100% on all conditions; I can in fact conclude that the weather turned out quite nice for us as we were hoping thursday's weather wasn't like previous days in the week. It was a somewhat early start with Hamish and I being dropped off at Brian's place to set out for the boat ramp at around 5:45-6AM. We quickly piled the gear into the boat and drove off. At 6:30AM we arrived at the ramp, and we launched the boat and headed off to the first spot where we drifted around finding bait on the sounder. Nice morning at the Manly Boat Ramp We all had some quick goes at dropping the sabiki jig and soon enough we had piled up a couple of decent yakkas and plently of good sized pike (this was nice as Brian says the pike haven't been in the bay recently and he's had to resort to dead ones. We headed to the first spot to soak some lines - Mud Island Note: Brian provided us with an itinerary for back home as well as just to let us know where we would fish, which included a nice little diagram of the spots we went to: Setups and tackle for the day (not 100% so Hamish and Brian please correct me in comments haha: Brian - Used a revros combo plus a little rod for the sabiki jig and some heavy setups with 4000 and 5000 Daiwa tierras on them (from memory). Hamish - Abu garcia overhead combo + heavy spin combo + light 3000 shimano stradic w/shimano raider Charlie - Shimano FX 4000 + 6-8kg shimano sonic snapper edition + Daiwa legalis lt2500d paired with 2-6kg daiwa exceler We all used 3-gang hooks on some setups in hopes for some schooly mackerel but no luck with these. Everyone had leaders or traces ranging from 20-40lb, with 4 ball sinkers and 4/0 to 6/0 circle hooks. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- At the Mud Island spot Brian and Hamish stuck primarily to live Pike whereas I threaded on dead cuttlefish + some extra tentacles. Just after dropping the lines my exceler went for a run and excitement built up in the boat. The fish felt decent and was giving some nice headshakes, and as I pulled it up I saw it was a fun sized squire at around 35cm. Not a very big fish but it was my first squire and my first fish out on the bay so i was happy to be off the donut! Sooner or later my rod kept getting bit and a pulled in some more little squire. Unfortunately, Brian lost had what seemed to be a quality snapper in the 50s or low 60s, and after a quick fight he was reefed. After a few more touches on Brian's and my own setups Hamish had aquired a dreaded wobbegong - the "fight" lasted about 10-15 minutes with Hamish solely using his strength to pull the dead weight up the top. After a little while my setup went off again with some more promising little runs and some fun headshakes. After a quick fight I had pulled up a little Grassy which was just legal. I wanted to keep 1-2 reefies (or a snapper if the fishing allowed), so it was put into the esky. (post scaling and gutting once back home) It began to get quiet and the bite turned off: And we headed off to... The Rous Channel The boat ride over took a little while and once we arrived we noticed it was a little more choppy compared to where we previously were, but this was ok. We had the same deal with bait and rigs and threw them out including a couple mackerel ones. After about an hour and a bit with a few bites and pest species caught (will be noted at the end of report for jokes) we decided to clear out and head to the final spot of the day which was... Green Island After completing the boat ride over we dropped down our lines again and spent the last hour or so of the day here. 2 Mates Here we once again had little luck and only a few bites. I think Hamish got a yakka or 2 from dropping the bait jig but that was about it. Heading Home: We left from Green around 3:40 and arrived back at Manly boat ramp at pretty much bang on 4. Good timing on Brian's behalf! We drove back to his place to unload the boat and then Hamish's Dad picked both of us up and took us home. Overall it was a nice day out and I'm grateful for the opportunity. Thanks again Brian! I hope we can potentially get out again during the Christmas/Summer Holidays. NOTE: Pest Species : Brian had hooked some unpleasant surprises like a grinner, i think maybe a smaller wobby, and a stupid eel that tangled him up and wasted his time trying to de-hook it. Also here is the grassy before being baked whole. It was very good with lemon, dill, butter, and parsley. It took about 12 minutes on each side on the fish grill function on my oven: - Cheers, Charlie.
  4. Went out in the southern bay late this afternoon with my brother flicking some soft plastics in some very shallow water. We picked our way through a lengthy species list (Snapper, Grassy Sweetlip , Gold Spot Cod , Mosses Perch, Flathead, Black Spot tuskfish , ) and came away with a nice little box of fish . Regards Neil
  5. Hi guys, Been looking for an all rounder for under 40k for a while now in a pretty tough second hand market. A boat that has come up is a Blackwater mark 1 2014 w Yammy 115 2 stroke (low hours). I can't seem to find anything online on this model other than the manufacturer's website. They seem to have been making larger vessels for 30+ years. Anyone familiar with this boat? Intended use is watersports at the lakes and the odd trip around moreton bay etc. Other boat is a Haines hunter 520r with 100 Merc 4 stroke. This doesn't have the cuddy cabin. We see the cabin as an advantage as we have young kids. Thanks in advance Simon
  6. Hi Fellow Fishers, Im taking an RDO tomorrow and will put the boat in at Shorncliffe tomorrow. For the first time in a few months. im out of touch on what’s biting at the moment. Thinking of heading over to Moreton and throw a few pillows around early then maybe chase some whiting. Open to any suggestions on what to chase this time of year? cheers TowKnee
  7. Hi all, Looking at getting a new boat for getting the kids into water sports at the lakes around south east Queensland as well as some fishing and exploring Moreton bay. I have no experience on the bay and the question I have is around a suitable do it all vessel. I like the idea of bow riders as they have plenty of capacity to take additional people (some have legal capacity for 8). Looking at under 6metre (19ft). Not sure how the bowriders would go in the bay if the wind got up a bit from what I have read? If someone with a bit of relevant experience could point me in the right direction it would be appreciated. Simon
  8. Hey guys, been a while since I popped in! Still fishing a lot. In terms of catching; not so much... lots of donuts lately! I ended up selling my stealth kayak. I couldn't quite get used to being offshore on it and by being on edge meant the enjoyment factor wasn't quite there. Oh well, I gave it a go! So last week I went halves in a boat with a long term fishing mate, Muzz. Quintrex renegade 440sc with 60hp yamaha. Many of you know how much I loved my 420 renegade, so I was super keen to get another one but this time a bit bigger and with a console as I mostly do bay and offshore duties. Plus it's small enough to launch off the beach at straddie which was a key point (residents can apply for a permit to do so). Blooded it last week (well, I didn't, the others on board did haha) but we had a good cookup nonetheless! been getting some nice landbased squid too Anyway, keen to have a read of people's reports! Sam
  9. Hi I know this question gets asked a lot, but I was hoping someone local to myself could chime in. I'm at Wello Point in Redland City. We're looking at our first boat, and are trying to figure out where to start. Ideally, we'd like to be able to have the experience and confidence to fish around the southern Moreton Bay and be able to spend a day on the beach at Peel, that's our current goal and what's got my wife on board I've had plenty of people give advice and where they all seem to align is, aluminium hull and a quality motor that you can trust, that seems to make sense to me. Where the advice differs is the size of the boat. Some have recommended to start small 3.5-4m to get confidence around the estuaries, others have said, you'll outgrow that too soon, get something around 4.3-4.5 with a windscreen, that's big enough to make it a little more comfortable for the family, and that will give some room to grow. I guess it's personal, but I'm personally leaning towards the second, and have been looking at a couple of Quintrex Estuary Anglers 420. On a mostly-decent day, would one of these get you to Peel comfortably? Or be good enough to poke around the islands for a fish, or are they apt-named because they aren't too great outside of a creek or river. This stuff is second nature to most locals around here, so being new to the boating and fishing world, is a bit daunting; thanks for the patience. Cheers
  10. I have often wondered where the location of the Brisbane Bar recording station was, so i looked it up today. It has always seemed to be out when it comes to the South Passage Bar and I now know why. It is Located not that far from Mud island. Not sure how they can call it a Bar though. So if you are looking at the tide times to cross the South Passage Bar, you should lookup the times for the SPB not the brisbane bar. https://www.tide-forecast.com/locations/Brisbane-Bar-Australia https://tides.willyweather.com.au/qld/brisbane/south-passage.html
  11. Legends I planned a solo yak trip for this morning and had a wello time. i awoke at 3am for the 40min drive to my favourite spot Wellington Point. The plan was to be on the water by 430am and ready to drop just before sunrise. I arrived at the ramp in the pitch of darkness with only a couple trailers in the car park. The wind was a little fresh and the water a bit lumpy but nonetheless I ventured out. 5mins into my paddle I took on a wave and was drenched! Maybe this wasn’t such a good idea anywho I trudged on as it wasn’t that bad and I filled my zero harm guidelines. Life best on white light on head lamp on and flashing red light on. I arrived at the drop off and made it to the 6-7m mark and dropped my baits. One floating the other a dropper. Straight away the dropper was getting hit....and I missed it! Quickly baited my fresh squid from mr bait and again got hit this time...I’m on! Pulled in my first ever grassy just shy of 30. dropped again and wamo! On again this time a pinky just under 30. I thought here we go this is the day I’m going to land my first legal snapper! oh how wrong I was. I spent the next 5 hours Soaking baits with little success just a tiny pinky a few bites and of course the obligatory grinner! oh well great morning spent on the water the wind died down and so too did the waves by sunrise so a safe and enjoyable trip. mr snapper if your out their mark my words.....I will catch you when I least expect it. Leo
  12. Well just found my favourite kayak fishing spot! Wello wello wello it is a great spot on a perfect morning, let’s put it this way....I won’t be fishing along Redcliffe any longer. launched the yak at 530am headed through the markers to the drop off, took a left at albakerky and shortly after I was netting my first squire measuring 29 I squealed like a school boy as this was my first I’ve landed in a yak! I started drifting right along the drop off and was getting hits but no luck until a two foot grinner took the bait. By this time my squid I caught a couple weeks ago had defrosted and I swiftly chopped her up. Fresh is best! I got hammered by something big! Fought for a minute and the snapped on the reef! This time I yelled like a cray Neanderthal! Now I was far right heading towards the mangroves and got smashed again and reefed but this tim managed to get him out only to see another 29 squire foul hooked. For the next hour I kept getting hit the reefed until I got excited but this time I pulled up a 40ish baby shark. Soon after landed another squire at 27 and started paddling back towards the ramp. I had another drop and a flat head measuring 42 was landed. Went quiet at around 1030 so called it a day. Had a great time at wello sand will definitely be going back!!
  13. Hey Guys i am going for a camping trip at the tip of Cape Moreton and was wandering if there are any land-based fishing spots for tuna, trevally, Macs, and other large pelagic species. I was going to throw some hardbody lures. I was thinking that fishing off the rocks was where to go. Am i wasting my time throwing lures off the rocks? Any response would be greatly appreciated!
  14. Hey guys, I'm heading to Moreton with family this weekend. I don't have a boat of my own but was thinking to hire one of those 4hp tinnies from the resort and try some offshore fishing. I read a lot about good spots around the north and south end of the island, but I imagine the tinny will be lanuched near the resort which is right in the middle and I dont think I could take it that far with fuel being limited. So my plan is just to take it out 2-3ks into the bay directly from the launch area (weather permitting), does anybody have any suggestions around any specific spots along the west coast. What kind of line and lures should I use? Cheers
  15. What a funny day today. Went out with Ellicat again. In his spanking new boat. We hit up one of his spot Xs at Green (Island, not the green zone). Nothing was raised there so we decided to hit the Rainbow to see if there where any Mackeral still around. We settled in and I provided Ellicat with some grinner bait and within few minutes he is onto a cracking fish, hmm well I should say a shovel nose ray Ellicat was not to upset at this stage so I provided him with another live bait. Again it did not take long and he was on again this time with some good runs and what seemed to be some head shakes. The fight quickly changed to a fight to keep the fish off the bottom. A solid battle ensued and up pops a Stingray. This is where Ellicat’s mood changed yelling at me to pull the anchor. A quick run back across the bay and we where back at the ramp. Lesson learnt I will not give him any live bait as he really is a Ray magnet and I am not talking Mr Kennedy. IMG_0698.MOV
