  1. Anyone know people or shops in Brisbane that make and weld on after market bow mount brackets/plates to aluminium boats? For Minn Kota, Watersnake, MotorGuide etc.. electric motors. I emailed Holt Marine as their website pictures this, but got no response. May call them later. Are there any others who provide this service in Brisbane? I would prefer a few quotes. Below is the sort of example I would prefer taken from the Internet. Needs paint though! Maybe even info on any bolt on solutions that look professional? My boat is a painted hull and 2014 model so I am not looking for quick and dodgy methods. Here is the front of my stessco. Any recommendations to get an electric motor on the front of this boat would be much appreciated!
  2. Any recommendations for a mobile mechanic in Brisbane for a mate? 15hp 2 banger Evinrude.
  3. Hi all. New to this forum, so please be gentle team. The Barra I am referring to here is the Ford Falcon motor - not the fish, but we all would enjoy catching the latter! I am restoring an old wooden clinker boat and want to replace a tired old Volvo Penta petrol motor. It has been suggested I fit a Ford Barra six-cylinder motor (used right up until Ford stopped producing Falcons, Territory's etc) here in Australia. Yes, I realise there are many other varieties of motors that fit in a boat. But I don't want a V8 due to space limitations and a diesel would likely be too expensive. A used Barra motor with lower K's can be purchased reasonable cheaply. So a straight six appeals. Therefore, why not the Barra with MPI and ECU rather than, say, an old Mercruiser carby version or whatever? What will the Barra need to marinise it (heat exchanger acknowledged, alternator, starter motor etc)? Does anyone run a Barra in their boat? How does it perform? Did you marinise it yourself or get a marine mechanic to do the work? Estimated costs? Dog clutch or Borg Warner Velvet Drive? (I have one of those, a 70C, rated to 200hp - will it handle the Barra power?). I know petrol inboard motors need specific safety components and insurance might be an issue ... but hey, that's what the old boat started out with back in the early 1970s. I would appreciate any advice and suggestions (I already have a boat with an outboard and, no, I'm not going to use the old Golley for barbecue wood!) Thanks in advance.

    Pod or no pod?

Hello all, Pretty new to the whole forum thing but I thought I would reach out to get some advice or hear some experiences from others. I’m in the market for a new boat and I am considering purchasing a Quintrex Fishseeker and modifying it to suit my needs, i.e. console, larger fuel tank etc. One thing I would want to do is have more hp as the current max on the hull is 90 (maybe go up to 130/140hp). knowing that I will have to get re-rated my question is should I be considering having to install a pod or just go straight off the transom as is? Which would perform better? Cheers.
  5. G'day, anyone know where I can download the service or workshop manual from please? Thanks AL
  6. Is there such a thing as a comprehensive course or a Cert that one can do to become certified in outboard/small engine maintenance? Something that I'd like to learn from scratch rather than try to work out by guesswork or elimination if I'd ever need to do so. Any particular recommended learning centre maybe?
  7. So I have a Suzuki 70 and have been told they are the same engine as the 90. Anyone every upgraded a motor like this? Can I just swap a spare part or where would I go to get it done?
  8. G'day guys I've got a problem with my Suzuki outboard (2012 DT40W) that I was hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction on. I replaced most of the normal service items, gear oil, spark plugs, fuel filter, impeller etc about 1-2 months ago Since then I've taken it out a few times, and everything seemed to be running fine. That was until I was on my way back in from Mooloolaba and I ran one of the fuel tanks dry. I hooked up the other tank, and fired her up but started having issues at idle/low rpm when in gear (R or F doesn't seem to make a difference). Any sort of get-up-and-go throttle and it seems to thump along normally. Not sure how to describe it, but the motor periodically feels like it loses power, and then gives a squeal before running normally again. Sometimes it'll happen in rapid succession, others not so. I've put up a little vid showing it Since the first appearance of this issue I took it out with a fresh batch of fuel to see if it was related. Whilst I don't recall any issues when heading out from the ramp, it did start happening again after cruising around for a bit. Also concerned it may sound a little rougher at idle/low rpm - but not sure if that's just paranoia Motor seems to run fine when back at home flushing the passages out. Video: http://vid289.photobucket.com/albums/ll203/Gogatee/Produce_zpst5uvndro.mp4 Any ideas? PS: I don't normally have that red safety cord hanging over the transom
  9. Hello Peeps! I am continuing to research boats and asking advice here and there. I've narrowed my search down to; Quintrex Lazeabout '88-'92 4.5m. 560kg on trailer Seafarer V-Sea 474 4.74m. 700kg on trailer Or if the money starts flowing out me arse; Quintrex Freedom Sport 490 4.9m. 900kg on trailer.(500 Freedom sport) Here's the question; How long are these rigs on the trailer. Tow eye to furthest point at the back. (I would probably need to drop the outboard down to gain a few less inches) And what about overall height on the trailer with bimini folded down obviously. Would a Freedom Sport 500 5.07m be any longer than the 490 when on the trailer? This is all a fair way off yet, but I need to know what will fit in me garage!! TIA! I aasume I can drag these around behind me Falcon (one at a time of course )

    cleaning

I just bought a 4 year old quintrex that has been in the water for the whole 4 years, I need to clean off the barnicles, I have tried using a presure cleaner (water blaster) with only half the problem fixed, there is some serious barnicles to remove. I am also still looking for an outboard 6 hp or less thats not too old and also a trailer to fit the tinny (3.7m) Any help would be appreciatted. Please does anybody have any ideas on how to remove the rest of the barnicles??
  11. Morning fellow AFOers, Just a quick thought. Many a first time boatie has left the ramp without knowing the ins and outs of their motor and ran into trouble out on the water. Having just purchased a boat myself, is there any tips the boaters from AFO could give to newcomers? Eg - Where to buy workshop manuals What a basic toolkit should contain Maintenance Etc. Any tips or helpful advice would be appreciated and put to good use Thanks Felix
