  1. Looks like my season has come to an end, and there's some worrying developments about its future. Once the trout move off to spawn it takes a couple of months for them to move back, then the Cod qo quite followed by the yellow belly as they stop actively feeding in the cold months. Traditionally I would then focus on the redfin with the ultra light gear, but due to an epidemic of red spot they have been all but wiped out this summer, and that's a huge worry. Redfin are the main food source for the other species and without that previously inexhaustible supply, the other species won't be feeding up as well, worse yet there are reports of red spit being found on the yellow belly in the lake, if it kills them off then with both Main predators of young carp, their population will explode. If that does happen, then it's bound to spread the entire length of the murry. But anyway I look at it, when the seasons change and the fish come back on there could be a major hit to my season, even this year my average yellow belly went from around 8lb down to around 3-4lb. So it is possible it's already being felt.
  2. I loaded the ute last night and was up at 5:30 this morning for a pre work fish. I was fishing by 6am in the dark and got a little 45cm yellow belly on my 2nd flick, things went a bit quiet after that so a quick move to another spot upstream and I was into a solid 60cm yellow belly on the little 3kg rod with a 1000 side reel and light 6lb braid, pulled in another little 40cm yellow belly and then Strait away hooked into a super fat 57cm yellow belly, at 2st I thought id snagged a rock as the lure just stoped and sat there, i gave it a shake to try get it off when the "rock" started to swim away. It put a a brilliant fight with lots of runs and it definitely didn't want any part of the net. But steady pressure and keeping calm did the trick. I also foul hooked a fat cap that gave me a hell of a run around. Another bloke fishing down from me lost to and I noticed he lost them shortly after tightening the drag trying to net them, I definitely think it's better to let them run and take your time netting them, especially on the light gear it's been paying me big dividends. I'm definitely going to try that tactic next trip chasing arapaima, I'm sick of loosing the really big ones.
  3. The wife was a bit upset with me when she found out I had been throwing the fish back my last few trips, I thought we still had a few in the freezer, but it turns out she had given a few to some friends parents. So I was tasked with catching a few. I headed out at the crack of dawn to get a couple of hours in. I got two in quick succession after a slow start, but then with 20min on the clock I noticed one up near the bank and made a play for it, turns out there was a few there, in 5-6 casts working the lure super slow I pulled out 3 more for full bag. 5 yellows in just under 2 hours wasn't a bad way to spend the morning.
  4. I popped down to the river today for a quick look, a slight break in the rain let me get almost an hours fishing in which was enough to land one good 7lb yellow belly. I decided to call it quits and only just made it back to the Ute before the heavens opened up again.
  5. Im staying in Roma, QLD and looking to go fishing nearby for cod and perch any suggestions for the area?
  6. Popped out for a fish today, the going was slow but with a bit of perseverance and switching up methods and fishing styles I managed a beautiful eating 65cm cod on the 3kg rod and a little finesse fishing with a 3" curl tail grub. Then running along the bank with a TN80 twitch fishing managed to bag a very respectable fat 64cm yellow belly. They went 8.5lb for the cod and a very nice 9.2lb for the yellow belly.
  7. Had a cracking day today after a slow week last week. It was supposed to rain all day and I had to get up early to take the wife to the train station. I was up, had the gear in the car and no sign of rain so I thought I would see what was happening at the river. Turns out the fish were on the chew hard, really hard. In two hours I caught 8 yellow belly and one cod. I kept the 4 biggest yellows and the cod which all up put 12.5kg of fish in the freezer, the wife it turned out took every fish in the freezer down to her friends to eat while they they were spending a few days together. So it's good to have a load back in the freezer.
  8. I had a great plan to take my heavy rod and a couple of Jackall Doozer lures out chasing a big cod. Unfortunately there were no cod to be seen, I couldn't cast quite as far as I liked and the wind was pulling my line hard and my lure wasn't going where I wanted it too. So I switched to my light 3kg outfit and started launching some McGrath vibes way out, and I suddenly hit into a good run of yellow belly. I managed to land a 4.2kg,4kg,2.8kg and 1.8kg yella's before I decided enough was enough and headed home.
  9. Had a good arvo fishing down at the river, I tried a new spot out and did really good. I got 6 all up but only bought two big ones home, 9lbs and 10lbs respectively. The little RMG redfin pattern deep diver was on fire today that's for sure.
  10. I popped out for a few hours fishing before a party tonight so I don't come empty handed. In two and a half hours I managed to bag a 5lb, 7lb, two 9lb and a 10.5lb yellow belly. I'd call that a successful last fish of the year.
  11. I piped out today and picked up Christmas lunch, I got 5 yellow belly the heaviest was 10lbs and a nice 4lb trout.
  12. I got sent out this morning to get some fish for Christmas dinner for us and some friends. There was a very slow start to the day with nothing biting until I worked out they were hugging the shore under rocks. So I switched to some soft plastics and did a little vertical jigging and half an hour later I had a, full bag between 5lbs and 7lbs.
  13. Things were winding up at the path today and I was sitting having a few drink and we decided to either go for a quick fish or hit the sauce. Well a quick fish won out, unfortunately we were only there for less then an hour and a half before rain came along, but I managed two incredible catches. Catch 1, believe it or not on a fumbled cast I was shaking a lure off a rock when a Murry Cray fish decided to grab it, it had a broken tip of one claw which is where the lure found a hold and I got a never to be repeated catch of a Murry Cray on a lure. But the 2nd,damn. I managed to bag after one very powerful fight, and a slightly tipsy slip into the drink an absolutely incredible 14lb, 67cm yellow belly, and absolute monster of a trophy. A few quick photos and a measure and I got wet once again releasing it back into the drink. I got a few others, but next to these two they aren't even worth a mention, these days 4lb Yellow Belly and Trout are just babies.
  14. Got a big party to go to tomorrow so I popped down to grab a few fish, not often the wife says forget about the jobs go fishing so I jumped at the chance. Spent two hours fishing and ended up with 3 very nice yellow belly and 2 very good trout and a couple of reasonable ones. That should keep everyone happy.
  15. I got up at o dark o'clock this morning to get a good 1st light session in before work. I was there all of 5min before I had back to back trout on the shore, nor real size, well one was just under 5lbs but these days they need to be over 6lbs to get me excited. I decided to put on a big lure for a **** at a cod which was my target species, 1st cast as I was slowly winding it in along the bank I got a big hit, short fight later and I had a new PB 9.7lb cod, definitely a, step up from my old 9.4lb PB. The next half hour or so only got me some 3lb trout so I moved up to the fast water and saw what at 1st I thought were carp swimming along the bank, then I realised they were yellow belly. So a short cast up the bank and I brought the lure right into their face, but no reaction. So I swam it past them down river and slowly retrieved it back up wgam, I got a big big hit, line screaming I to the current and the fight was on, I thought this had to be a cod for sure, but come time to net and weigh it and I had my 2nd PB of the day with a huge 11.1lb yellow belly. I figured that would do me, I started packing up to head home but just before I left I decided a couple more casts could not hurt, I've still got plenty of time, on the 2nd cast it had barely hit the water and had a couple of twitches when wham, I got slammed, two hands on the rod and wat h the line scream down the river. I barley got control of it to get it out of the current, so with the bet held in my teeth I made my down to it to pull it into the calmer eddies. I got set up and it still has a half dozen big runs towards the current before I got it beat, as it came to the surface once again I was expecting a cod but nope, it was my 3rd PB of the day, a 66cm 12.7lb yellow belly. It's almost sad, I barely got to enjoy breaking my PB when it got shattered again and again. But it was a hell of a couple hours fishing.
  16. Just had the most cracking fishing session I've ever had. I started of with my 1st ever trout hat trick, 3 solid 3lb trout from 3 casts, I will probably never do that again. Then I caught two more and had a full bag in under an hour, and all were good 3-4lb fish. I then caught a couple of little ones, things slowed down for 40min or so. Then they came back on with a couple more 3lb trout including a rainbow, then I hit a damn good 7.5lb brown. I had a cast in the shallows then in a big Eddie and got a solid 4lb yellow belly and the next cast I foul hooked a monster carp that I managed to land. All in all it was an absolutely brilliant day's fishing.
  17. I was soaking some bait today hoping for a cod but I was getting smashed by little red fin so I decided to flick a few lures. Got two nice little 35cm ones but I had to go pick up a boat trailer so I headed back to my gear and decided for a last couple of casts. 1st cast and right near the bank I got smashed, I was using a 6lb finesse rod and 6lb braid when something big hit my lure and started pealing off line. 5min later I had it near the bank expecting to have a cod and up came the biggest yellow belly if hooked yet. It came in at 64cm and 9.4lbs,and absolute monster.
  18. Popped out after work this arvo to flick a few lures, turned out to be a bumper arvo. I got 14 all up, most were smaller 35-40cm ones around 2.5lbs. But I did get some rippers including a, new PB at 7.2lbs. But I got some around 3-4lbs and a nice 5.5lb one, but that 7.2 was a damn good bit of luck. The big one, damn it was one fat solid fish. Next biggest at 5.5lbs

    A new PB

Got back to the river after a bit of a break and scored myself a new PB Yellow Belly at 6.4lbs. Got 3 little trout and a redfin as well but damn this had me feeling pretty good until a bloke near me caught a 13.5lb one. But I guess that gives me plenty of room for improvement in the future.
  20. Thought I was hooked into a big trout today, but it turned out to be a new PB 4lb yellow belly. I'm not complaining about that.
  21. While fishing today I heard the fishing was going really good at the weir, only trouble is the water is so high and fast nothing regular will hold still long enough in the current long enough to get a bite. Fellas have been using lead fish, basicly fish shaped sinker between 1oz and 2oz, you rig it like a tassie devil and jerk it off the bottom as it makes its way down current. Only trouble is only one shop is selling them and they are pretty big, not that well made and cost $4 each. Solution, make my own. I bought some long flat sinkers, 28gn and 57gm so right in the butter zone. I then cut some stainless welding wire, twisted a loop with a treble hook with some red heat shrink on it. Put the sinker on, then made another loop and put a swivel on. Then I squeezed it flat in a vice and bent the base to add a little movement. Everyone uses them plain lead which work but look a little rudimentary. So I made some like that and then powder coated some with hot dip jig paint. I think they look alright, not to see how they work. Traditional style finish New hopefully improved style.
