  1. They even talk to you. NPD today. Several captured.
  2. NPD area 3 this morning with glass out that turned into drizzling rain and then fining up. Fish were scattered being located on fad 4 , the floats , the tip of the island and on the drop off near fad 0. 39 bass, one lone yella and 25 southern strain of large mouth barra between 20cm and 57cm. The big ones certainly give you a work out. We could have caught a lot more but Neil objected to them grunting at him. Did out shrimp pots on the way back and disappointed to find most of them empty. Few other boats out so hopefully will see their reports. Some of the photos bit iffy as lens of camera got wet in the rain.

NT Barramundi Classic Darwin Game Fishing Club Daly River 7-13 of May 2018 (TBC). PH 0412 848 267 The NT Barramundi Classic is arguably Australia’s premier Barramundi fishing tournament, held on the unspoilt Daly River, located in the Northern Territory (250 kms south of Darwin). Held during the peak fishing times, barramundi are caught, measured, tagged and released by teams of three individuals and scores are accumulated on a length basis daily. Teams are permitted to fish a 52km stretch of the river from 7am to 5pm for five consecutive days. The outright winner is the team with the most accumulated points and receives the prestigious “Barra on a Stick”. This iconic tournament was was founded by the Darwin Game Fishing Club in 1982. From those humble beginnings the “Classic” has grown in stature every year to what you see today, a highly coordinated, state-of-the-art fishing tournament. The “Classic” is the flagship Barramundi fishing tournament worldwide and has a five-star National Accreditation. Competing teams descent on Darwin from all over Australia, as well as overseas to fish this week-long annual competition.
  4. Hey guys, Im going this weekend to target jewfish threadfin and barra. Its my first time targeting barra and jew do you guys have any tips. I will be using lures
  5. HI Guys, Was hoping the photo issue was solved before posting this trip but better late than never. Left home early on the 4th October and met mate a Nudgee and did the drive to the old stomping grounds of Hampo (also known as Rockhampton). Met a mate with his 4.53 Territory Sea Jay, stocked up with ice and fuel and headed north to Stanage bay. Road in was really good after hearing all the horror stories. 70km of bitumen and only 30km of dirt which had mostly been recently graded but pretty dry and dusty in some parts. Set up camp late arvo and rigged up ready for the first time chasing barra. Excited was an understatement. Now unfortunately due to the first night piss up we were up a little bit late the next morning and definitely a bit shady. Anyway we were off. Headed out the front for a jig on some rubble ground for no luck and a sea sick mate who had never been offshore, nothing to do with still being hungover. Headed up the passage to the first creek and saw fish on the side scan straight away, second snag we fished and about half an hour in I hooked the first barra on a vibe in deep on the snag. Great hit and fight and landed my first barra at 75cm. A few casts later on the same vibe I hooked a lot bigger one and lost it not long after. A mighty swirl is all I saw. Doh! Change of spots and with lots of fish on the sounder tried the same vibe and hooked a 63cm grunter which gave me a bit of curry. PB and back she went. Back to the first snag a little bit later later and a change of lure to a fat shad and I had annother 76cm Barra. A lot better fight and eventually in the net. And then I lost the magic vibe on the snag, and as much as we tried we couldn’t get it back. I shed a tear or two I have to say. Didn’t get a bite on any other colour all trip. Day two was very slow and bloody hot. The dog was not happy and we had to constantly wet him down. Straight to the creeks and hit probably 20 creeks for a few fingermark biggest by my mate at 42cm. Missed a few bites on Texas rigged paddle tails and learnt a bit of respect after being dusted a few times. Skipper got a 65cm barra at one of the last snags for the day. Back for more beers and snooze for me. The other two went out for a late arvo session with no luck on the ledge out the front. Saturday was windy with 15 – 20kt SE blowing early but we’ll just go ‘around the corner’ my mate said. 60kms late we get back to the ramp broken, battered but with my mate getting a 76cm barra. Bugger only started fishing 6 months ago. I won’t forget that trip back in a hurry and either will my back. Good feed at the pub that night and packed up camp in the morning for the drive back home. Great trip with a couple of good mates and already planning the next one. https://imgur.com/gallery/clIm6RJ
  6. They do exist! A genuine SEQ barramundi. Caught today on a gulp 4” drop shot minnow in watermelon pearl. Not quite the legal size of 58cm and closed season so released for another time. Only other notable catch for the morning was one good flathead at 64.5cm. all in all a good morning on the yak - save for a broken rod and a red bellied black trying to join me on the kayak! cheers, benno <‘><
  7. Hello people. Born in Gladstone QLD. Did primary and one year of high school there. Did years 9-12 at a boarding school in Cairns. Fished hard as a kid with some success and some failure. Did some university study (aquatic resource management), straight after high school. Got the poo poos with studying my life away and got a job growing prawns. Moved to Cardwell for a while and then to Mossman for a while longer within the prawn farming industry. Never was my lifestyle/ fishing balance better than then. Mainly chasing Barra, jacks and mudcrabs, but I also used to love chasing jungle perch and sooties in the freshwater. I was also pretty competent on the archerfish in Tinaroo dam as a kid. Won a few prizes in local comps on archerfish. Had some questions about things sometime in my 20's and moved to Brisbane to study again (engineering and science). Met a chick and the study ended up going by the wayside. I ended up mowing lawns and doing handyman type work. I didn't much appreciate her handyman work and we parted ways. Got some TA and store work in the steel fabrication and building industry. Got some more skills and progressed a bit. I did fish a little in seq in this time but not much. I ended up being based here but working away in north Queensland a lot and there I rekindled the passion for fishing. Some great sessions on grunter and whiting around Mackay in particular. Blah blah blah.... Changed companies within the building and construction game a few times. Ended up working with three diesel fitters as part of a small unique team. That's me in a nutshell, sorry for rambling. One day a few years later, I was fishing at one of "MY" favorite spots when something made me look over my shoulder. I saw a woman striding confidently over the flats with a yabby pump on her shoulder... I was impressed. Enter @Kat and that was that thus far.
  8. 4 of us to the western arm this morning. Fish were hard to find and small. I caught what looked like a tagged bass but when I reported it to suntag it actually was a barra that was tagged in Trinity inlet. Ended up with only 46 bass with largest 42cm.
  9. Woke up this morning to the season change, after 6 months of the dry season south east trade winds "fish drought" - eased winds and a very monsoony feeling in the air. Knocked off at lunch to be positioned at the creek mouth with a live mullet when the tide started going out - one cast with the net scored a net full of mullet ranging from finger length to huge, selected a few mid size ones. Didn't take long to get a hit and what I thought was a salmon positively ID'ed itself with a tail walk: 93ffa908-ed13-4496-8150-f870ba6aa323.MP4 Mid 80's-ish fat barra which was quickly dispatched, and went home to chuck it in the freezer - plan to delight my brother in law coming from Brazil in 2 weeks, with whole baked barra: Live mullet will be a sure thing for the next 4-6 months, till the south east trades come back in to ruin the fishing again! 10. Here's a few videos from one days fishing a couple years back before covid from fishing in Thailand, and one from a small park in town. Nothing too big on film as I had real problems with the gopro batteries.

  12. Hi all, Recently relocated to Cairns (well, Smithfield) with my partner for a bit of a change of scenery. We have relocated from Terrigal on the Central Coast NSW and will be here for at least 18 months. My partner relocated to Cairns hospital working a medical professional and I am working from home at my previous company from down South as a Network Engineer. Seeing as though I like to wet a line and dont exclusively know anyone from here (working from home I dont get the chance to really meet anyone), I thought I'd join the forum to try and get know some local fishos, get some idea of some spots, talk tackle, and just shoot the **** really. If you are in the area, dont be shy to drop me a msg. Down South I'd walk down to the beach and flick for flatties on the flats, chase the occasional bonito and salmon, and when I could be assed, chase some bass around the bush. Having bass tackle I would love to chase down some JPs up here. Ive had a few goes but finding the creek has been challenging. Also would love to get into some barra fishing. I dont have a boat so I guess I am limited in that way. So yeah, g'day everyone, happy to be here!
  13. Ended up taking out a charter for the day, wasn’t very keen on casting lures all day. My back was absolutely fried from Barra fishing the days previous. So me and the old man chose to just use good old fashioned bait. We caught a few schoolies and reefies and kept some for dinner later that day. After watching a guy on the trip lose about $200 worth of lures in just a few hours it felt like the right choice. At the end of the day we stopped into our final spot and for some reason I felt the urge to give it a go almost like what the heck do I have to lose haha. I was shocked at how big the poppers are you use for these fish. I was just trying to learn technique and get a feel for big poppers. Nothing like I’ve used before tbh. After about 5 casts i got the hang of it somewhat, when all of a sudden I got smacked by a massive GT. Craziest fight I’ve ever had on rod and reel it was so epic. I almost done a summer salt on the hookup I was not expecting it at all. I was ready to go home. I was already happy with the days catch. It was pretty magical tbh being in a place like that, during a crazy sunset. Last cast of the day. Definitely got the GT bug! So yeah he’s the GT and Barra I caught in 2 days. P.s if anyone has any idea what lure that is in the picture I’d like to know because I’m looking at buying a full GT setup and would love to know what lure I was using for my first big one. Cheers guys!
  14. Went out fishing with Nathan from guided down under in Rockhampton. It was a suprise for my 30th birthday. All i wanted was a big thready and to be able to achieve it i was stoked. My wife got the first one coming in at 101cm and i followed soon after with a 122cm then backed up by a healthy salty barra at 77cm the first fish i got caught and got bricked by a 51cm jack. I also hooked the biggest barra i have ever seen in my life that bent the treble in its 2nd jump. I literally thought i hooked a turtle for most the fight until the jump. I said some crazy stuff when i saw the size of this thing.

    Bli Bli Barra Park

Finished early today and thought I might take my daughter and her boyfriend for a night fish at the barra park. Jaide isn't so keen on the boat now that she's growing up but if I say barra park her face still lights up. Jaide landed the first barra after a wrestle in the mangroves we got it in the net and the score board was up and running , about an hour later Braith hooked onto a bigger unit but ended up popping the leader after a solid 15 minute fight . Half hour past it was finally my turn and mine spat the hook after 20 seconds we all ended up hooking up and losing fish for the next 40 minutes then I f finally managed to land one then it went dead until 5 minutes before closing time when I landed a much smaller one around 50 cm. The new live fibre handled as well as I expected their just such a good rod the alvey was ok but I would like the drag to be a bit smoother, maybe it will get smoother after a few good fish.
  17. Hello everyone, Once Yarrabah opens up, I will be trying my luck on it's headlands. I was just wanting some advice. Does anyone know of landbased barra, fingermark, jacks etc. been caught of False Cape or near it? I have seen some films fishing there but nothing but grunter and little fish. I will be throwing soft plastics and bait fishing. I cannot cast net off the rocks but will be throwing the net near the Yarrabah boat ramp. Should I be throwing my baits and lures as far as possible or just put them near the rocks. I do know for a fact that a headland right next to false cape (Kings Point) is a gun fingermark spot. This can only be accessed by boat though. Thank you for all your help.
  18. Hi all, I fish landbased off the piers in FNQ and constantly find I get baited without a hookup. I use 4/0 Eagle Claw Widegapes. I fish mostly with livebait or frozen prawns and squid. I am always getting bites on the frozen baits. They are reasonable and I have hooked fish like this in the past (but not much bigger than 40cm or smaller than 15cm). Should I fish like the snapper fishos in NZ fish by opening the bail arm and see if the fish runs with the bait? Thanks
  19. Hi all Does anyone have any tips for Yeppoon at about Christmas (we already have places and most things down pat) but i would like to work on three things. A. Catching livies, especially prawns, we normally get enough mullet, herring, etc - Places and what tide/time. B. Catching larger species, barra and threafin (which we already may encounter but not much) and maybe not in the Fitzroy as we might go there, just a small creek we can access land based (preferably not many crocs!) C. Catching more species like flathead and whiting. Once again, we already have some spots but maybe a surf beach or rock ledge.
  20. Finally north east winds started today after 10 months of south easterlies, so the beach is going to fire in the next few days. Hit the beach late afternoon with live mullet and managed a new PB at 116cm. My wife took the video; its a bit too long and gets boring sorry! Was released healthy. 21. G'day fellas. I hope i'm not breaking any rules by posting this without being a regular contributor to posts? I regularly enjoy checking out the great fish reports. I have a bit of tackle that doesn't get used much so it's time to move it on to someone that'll make better use of it. Daiwa TDX 4-9kg 6'4'' 1 piece baitcast rod. Fuji K guides. Condition: Excellent. Might have been on the water 3-4 days in total. It was on clearance a couple years back at Tacklewarehouse Camphill for $189. Perfect rod for Cod, Jack, Barra and anything inbetween. They seem to be of a higher quality than the Generation black rods - don't understand why they've been discontinued. Price: $100 Tairyo Nano Speed 6'6'' 1 piece 2-4kg Spinning rod. Fuji SIC guides. Condition: Excellent. Used less than 5 days at Somerset Dam. Bought in 2017 at Sandgate bait&tackle on special for $199. Very lovely rod. Price: $100 I'm happy for anyone to come inspect Located in the Browns Plains area. Thanks for viewing.
