        Diesel Engines

        New to the world of diesels. Do the diesel owners here have a preference for their brand of diesel ? Are any better than the others ? If your diesel had exclusively used one brand for it's 10 year life would changing it be in any way detrimental ?

      4. I have been pushed for time since I have been back, so I'm just having to short cut things to get everything back on track. No write up just some happy snaps because I will be out tonight.
      5. Our journey to the tip of Australia is over, although I wish it wasn’t. There was so much to see we had to skip a lot which gives us an excuse to go back there sometime in the future. We left our plans very loose, so we could take things as they presented themselves. I can not go into too much detail otherwise it would never end, and I tend to waffle a bit. I will let the photos do most of the talking. Our trip took just over 3 weeks and we covered over 6,000 km. On the way up we stuck to the coast till Cooktown and then headed to a few stations before finally getting to the start of the Old Telegraph Track (OTT). The trip didn’t really feel like it started till we arrived at the OTT sign. We met a nice family along the way and we decided to stay together for safety and assistance if we need each other. They had a Holden Colorado without a winch so we happy to have some company. The rivers were low being the end of the dry season which was one of the reasons we picked it do at this time. Many of the crossings were dry but there was still enough to provide some excitement and heart pounding moments. The southern part of the track was not what we expected. The track itself was not difficult until you arrived at the river crossings, which was to be expected. The northern part of the track was just as we expected, with slow progress and crawling through the bush over rocks and tyre ruts. I enjoyed this section the most. We wanted the car to come home in one piece, so we took the easiest routes through the rivers where possible. We had been speaking to people on the way up and a story of a guy seeing a Prado sinking at one of the crossings days before had us a little on edge. Never the less we were able to negotiate the whole track with only getting water in the car once earlier on because I didn’t go through quick enough to push a big enough bow wave and the carpets took 5 days to dry out. I have a very minor dent in one door and had to empty the starter motor of water which caused us a minor setback. It took us 4 days to do just the OTT camping at streams along the way. The threat of crocs was less with not as much water around. We did hear of a story where a croc took a horse at one of the crossing we camped at but could have been just a story. The scenery was spectacular, and I even managed to flick a few soft plastics around in crystal clear streams. I could see clearly with the polaroid sunglasses, so I waded up the stream never going any deeper than my shorts just to be sure. I was rewarded with my first ever Sooty Grunters which was exciting, and a highlight was hooking 4 Saratoga and landing 1. Crushing the barbs down for catch and release didn’t help my cause. The normal tourist areas were the standouts, Fruit Bat Falls, Twin Falls and Elliot Falls. There were times we were there by just ourselves and that was a cereal feeling. Once the OTT was conquered we still had the tip to look forward to. Many hundreds of KM on the corrugated PDR (Peninsula Development Road) was ahead of us. Don't know what has happen to quality of this photo ATM will have to find the original. It certainly felt like an accomplishment getting to the tip via the OTT. It doesn’t have to be that hard if you take the PDR though. We looked on the map and on the return trip we took the PDR and the same distance on the OTT that took 4 days only took 3 hrs on the PDR. Most caravans and non 4 x 4 take this route all the way to the top. Gunshot. We did the chicken track however another Prado rolled there hours later with kids in the car. We saw it on at the repairers on a flat bed truck days later. Collateral damage from the brave that try it. To change it up a bit we came inland on the way home and one of the highlights was visiting the Stockmans Hall of Fame in Longreach. We spent the 5 hours there and then went back for the dinner and show. We also did the Qantas Museum but in all honestly it not my thing and I could have skipped it. There was so much other stuff that I haven’t covered but a good time was had by all. I"ll post more picture tomorrow night.
      6. In preparation of our family trip to Cape York in September it is going to be a squeeze with 4 in the car and all the equipment we need to take. So on the weekend the 4WD supercentre had a sale on rear sliding draws. I read the reviews and most said for the money you can't beat them. They don't have a specific kit for the Prado 150 series I have but, I just bought the 120 series kit with wings and adapted that. The set up including the wings was $389. It weighs 65 kg and is of sturdy construction. The first thing to decide was whether to remove the last row of seats to install them, or just mount them on top of the fold down seats. I opted for on top, because I didn't want to have to store the seats in the shed and hope the rats and mice didn't take a liking to them. I removed the tied down points in the seats and replaced with longer SS bolts and extend the bracket. Not the size bolts i would like but could only use the existing bolt hols in the tie down points. At 65 KG and then filling the draws and the fridge it will have some weight to keep it from moving. The added bonus with this system is one of the top lids is a fridge slide, saving a few more hundred dollars. I re-purposed the wing kit by cutting down the and reshaping the wings to make matching dividers. Before I put it all back together I checked all screws that have nylon nuts were tight, silcone spray to all the roller bearings. I wasn't happy with the tiny self tappers that were use to fix the fridge slide latch, so replaced them with longer and more aggressive thread SS screws. Other than that they seem really good value and fraction of the price you can pay. Are there better out there? absolutely but at a comparable cost I don't think so. Even if you built them yourself I think you would hard pressed to do it for under the price at anywhere near the same quality. The dogs gave them their paws approval. I placed them as far right as I could, so still had access to the bottle jack and 12v points. Other reviews said they were happy with them after 9 months of 4 x 4 use.       7. What recommendations do people have for a builders trailer? any fabricators better than others?
      8. Am planning on starting to do a bit of camping with the family now the youngest of our 2 boys is 'ready' for it ..... I guess essentially the advantages/disadvantages of each type. I'm thinking the one above will suit as it will allow me to easily slide my kayak up onto it and tether it down and when camping I could put a roof bag on top and strap it down. From what I've seen the compatible jerry can holders, etc are expensive but I'm not sure I'd use them anyway. If you have a roof rack/basket and have any tips or know of another brand I haven't thought of I'd love to hear of it/them.

I'm proposing the weekend of Friday 16th - Sunday 18th February as dates when we have high tides around 8.30 - 9.30am at Cooloola/Teewah. EDIT 29/1/18 Settled at Teewah 9/2/18 - 11/2/18 EDIT 1/2/18 Cancelled Alternative place of Bribie Island has high tides 1.30 - 2.30pm. It would be good if you could indicate your location preference and any alternate dates. Once we've thrashed it out and settled on a place and time we can organize the finer details.

        New Tow Rig

        I had been thinking about trading in my Bt50 after it had run out of warranty a few months ago but no other dual cabs were really jumping out at me. The Mazda was an awesome ute and had taken me everywhere on and offroad that i wanted to go. I was worried I would buy something not a good as what i had and be kicking myself. So the search was on and after looking at every dual cab out there i ended up buying a Colorado while Holden were offering the 7 year factory warranty. The new model is a huge improvement over their previous model and has been getting very good reviews. So far Im happy with it and not really missing anything from the Mazda. The build process has begun and hopefully ill pick up a good deal on a lift kit and bullbar at the redcliffe 4x4, camping and boat show next month. I want to get it all decked out before a mid year trip to fraser.

In rummaging around in the world of light aircraft in Australia i noticed the only cheap usable aircraft come in kit form and some from time to time are converted to amphibian, However, since 2013 many "experimental classification" kit light aircraft have become both vaguely reliable and cheaper and only a few fall into the "average wage earner" level of owner builder that can be obtained as amphibian standard.At least one stands out and is not too bad, it comes from South Africa and is called a "BushCat".       12. I am considering converting my standard boat trailer to a 4x4 version. however I am concerned about the trailer being to high to launch. I am considering a "step down axel" to compensate for the rise in height, however it looks like this would be where the axle might bend. The reasons I want to convert my tailer is my 14" wheels are just not handling the roads as well as what I would like. Has anyone done this on there trailers and how did you compensate for the rise in height. My boat is 5.3 seajay and needs about ⅓ of the trailer in the water to launch and retrieve I have measured it and I can just fit some 17" hilux wheels on it and be legal.
      13. Bit of a DIY tutorial on how to replace the steel winch cable with dyneema rope and one way to do a correctly rated eye splice. So as some forum members know Tina helps me drive on and drive off the trailer with minimal fuss and stress (we do use the winch but not as heavily as I would be using when solo), our trailer is 3 years old and has had quite a well maintained life thus far. So it kind of surprised me that the inevitable eventually happened and the winch cable failed (with no injuries luckily). So take this opportunity for those with steel cables to check for kinks or frays. The cable failed at the crimp where a kink slowly worked its way through. Step 1: Remove the winch from the winch post, should be 3 bolts. Step 2: Undo the locking nut holding the tail end of the steel cable. Step 3: Strip the cable, you should always use gloves when handling steel cable. Steel cable has memory, it's heavy, it flies through the air when it snaps, sinks in water and requires a fair amount of maintenance, etc. Dyneema rope has very little to no memory, it's light, it drops limp when it snaps and floats on water. The only negative I have about it is that a little care must be paid when using it to avoid cutting it and getting dirt/rocks caught in the fibers. This one is rated to 3500 kg and cost me $6 per meter (I got 6 meters) and I will be reusing my original S-hook. Average price was around $60+ for a similarly rated item off the shelf. Perks of Dyneema is that if it snaps you can retie it and keep going (also applies to 4x4 winches - many of which also use Dyneema now). Step 4: Give the winch a good clean to remove all the grease. Step 5: Electrical tape the head end of the rope.

Make: Isuzu Model: D-Max SX Extra Cab Year: 2014 Modifications: ARB Sahara bull bar, ARB Dual Battery mount with redarc smart wiring with 2 12v outlets in the tray and an Anderson plug under the tray to connect solar, rear facing work lights, ARB underbonnet compressor (for lockers I don't have yet, but can inflate tires too), Hella LED Spotlights, UHF radio, factory colour coded steel tray with tie down points, safari snorkel. Notes: Great fuel economy, great on the beach, comfortable and I think at the time was the best value 4x4 Ute on the market. Still have quite a few plans before I'll be 100% happy. But for now, as a daily driver and beach car it has been just under 25,000km of trouble free driving over the past 12 months.
      15. Well went out to NPD this morning to have a bit more of a play around with the yak with the electric on it. First time on the water since Borumba, probably 3 months since on NPD. Water is the lowest I have seen it since the 2008 drought. Ramp is quite dodgy now. electric went quite well, did 10k round trip on 1 x 35 amp battery and it was still at 12.4 volts when I got home. Would have gone further but a bit of a cool breeze sprang up from behind me and when I turned around to look, there was a bewdy of a squall coming across the dam behind me, with storm clouds in the distance. Time to head for home! Got about 20 yards from the ramp when the sky opened up and I got saturated! Speed was about 4kph on low, just slow enough to troll a lure ok. 6k on high. Only issue was sounder didnt work, no juice to it. Worked fine first trip, so not sure what happened, maybe a dry joint. Didnt really worry me, know the dam well enough to have not lost any lures.
      16. Hey team, last time my car was serviced, I had complained that there was a persistent oil leak, it was diagnosed with a rear main seal leak. I was told that in order to replace this cheap seal of about $50, the entire gear box had to be dropped out just to simply access it. So the estimated costs was at least $700 just due to the labour hours required to drop the gear box, replace the seal and bolt the gearbox back on. My car is a 2011 Triton GLXR My current finances don't exactly allow me to go blast a minimum of $700+ to have this fixed currently. I have read a bit about additives you can add to the oil to help seal this up to prevent the leak, but have also read that this is not healthy for the oil or the engine. My question is, has anyone had this problem before? and if so, did you simply pay to get it fixed, or have you used this oil additive to stop the oil leak. any advice would be very grateful!!

        Might be a silly question but here goes, I went out this morning & a real scary noise started coming from the trailer & my mate & i decided it was the brake pads, when asking for the brake pads do they go by trailer brand or trailer size or do all trailers run the same pads etc ???. it's a 4.8m on a sea-link trailer. thanks

In qld you can now pay your car,trailer and boat rego via direct debit. http://www.qld.gov.au/transport/registration/fees/pay/directdebit/index.html took me about 15 min to set it up they give you a list of regos in your name and you can select which ones you wish to be paid via direct debit when they become due and you also have a choice between 3,6,or 12 monthly renewals. I reckon its a great idea especially for anyone traveling. Cheers Ray
      21. So after spending the last couple of months bringing my boats maintenance up to scratch, I'm now paranoid about the state of my trailer. The last thing I want now is for all the hard work I've put into my boat be obliterated when the rear cage on my trailer rusts through and drops the hull on the axel. This is the worry I have in mind: I've spent over $500 in the last 18 months repairing things on this trailer and really feel now that I've been flogging a dead horse. I'm sure it can all be fixed if I take the boat off and have someone weld and repair it. I'm thinking for that effort, I'll just get a new trailer. After several searches on here, various other sites and asking friends, new trailer brands seem heavily reliant on opinion rather then fact. Of the six local trailer brands, all seem the same and only one offers straight up prices. I don't mind spending the money, but like most things don't want to feel I'm being sold up the wall. So what do members think, have experienced or know of regarding new boat trailers? My current Dunbier, despite obvious faults, is a good trailer. My boat sits and travels nicely on it, and best of it all, it's simple to load. I am not a large man(under 60kg) and can quite easily, by myself, load my 470SF, which weighs boat and motor around the 1t mark, onto this trailer with a hand driven winch. Being able to load my boat, by myself, is a must, so roller setup is crucial. However the Dunbier sits low, tows rather heavy( I've even towed it with a 4.2D Landcruiser and it was heavy), and being a box section frame, has rusted from the inside out. My thoughts keep being steered towards Belco trailers, whom I've already requested a quote from. Swiftco offers a price of $2530, which seems about the average price I can expect(doesn't it?), however the journey down the coast puts me off. Redco, FMS, Oceanic and Sealink all seem to have only a broad level of information online and I hate wasting peoples time chasing a quote if I know I probably won't go with them. I'd like a C section or H beam trailer if I can, considering the eventual outcome of boxed frame trailers, but can't find a lot of information other then "custom" trailers regarding this style. This says extra dollars, which as stated am happy with, I'd just like to know the expectation. Please fill me in on all your thoughts.
      22. Hi all, been doing lots of maintenance work this week waiting for the wind to die. Hooked the trailer on this morning and one of the brake lights is not working. The unit is a submersible led set up that I put on about 4 years ago because I was sick of replacing bulbs in the bayonet version. Been working a treat ever since. All other lights, including tail lights are working fine. I am using a flat pin to round pin converter but this all looks fine. Gave all the connections a spray of inox, reinserted all connections a couple of times, but still no good. Is it likely that the LEDs in the brake light have died, or do you think it is a wiring problem. Pretty sure the both brake lights come off the one pin, so doubt it at the car end. Do you think I need to replace the whole unit? Any ideas welcome. Thanks, Steve.
      23. So, like everyone, I have really been looking forward to the 10 day break between Christmas and New Years. I have definitely not done enough fishing in 2015 and 2016 looks like being a busy one so not hopeful that I will be spending much more time on the water next year. The plan was to do the family eating and drinking thing on Christmas Day, than agreed to drop one of my boys up to his inlaws near Woodford on Boxing Day, then get out early on Sunday to get some of these mackerel before samsteele cleans them out. Teed up my nephew to deckie with me ( he is a marine biologist so how could I miss, right?). Got home on Boxing Day to realise that my son, who doesn't live with us, had parked his car in the driveway between the boat and the road and didn't leave his keys as he promised he would. With no way around it, I had to spend yesterday staring at the very still trees and thinking how good it would have been on the water. He is not due back until Wednesday at the earliest. Today we went for a quick run to Burleigh for an early surf and brekkie and then home by noon. Thought it would be a good opportunity to do some safety maintenance before we head to Burrum Heads in January. Check and service the inflatable life jackets. Easy. Check and restock the first aid kit. Easy. Check the wheel bearings - should be easy. A little noisy, OK for short trips but if I am driving 350 k at speed in probably high temps maybe a repack of the bearings is a good idea. As usual, the wheel nuts are so tight I can't loosen them, even using a metre long pipe for leverage. So off the mechanic it will be, if they can fit me in that first week in January. In the meantime, I will be watching the wind forecast for the rest of this week hoping for something under 15 knots so I can get out at least once before I go back to work. Thanks for reading this long rambling "white whine" but I needed to vent to someone and my wife just doesn't understand. Keep up the posts, boys, I need to know what I am missing out on!
      24. Hey team, I have some rhino racks bars waiting to go on my car for when the funds (more so time) come available. In the mean time I have been looking at some soft roof racks (to transport my kayak) as I have used them before with no dramas. In my eyes, they are a lot of money for some foam and a strap with a big logo on it. I have read about some folk using 2 pool noodles with the straps running through it then attaching it under the windows and through the car the exact same way that soft roof racks work. Now there seems to be a lot of people voicing how terrible of an idea this is and how dangerous it is. Yet I fail to see how it is any different from the regular soft roof racks you buy from BCF Unless I’m missing something that someone can point out…? Now I know that softies just do not compare to regular roof racks in terms of being able to securely tie down the kayak, but for a quick 15mins trip down the road, I don’t see how the $5 pool noodle solution is that dangerous? Happy to be proven wrong lol Chris
