  1. Hey guys, do you guys know what size hooks are used for assist hooks on slippery dogs and sugar pens? Thanks
  2. Hi all So my son returns from his first day back at school with info from his mate, who lives at Dohles Rocks. His mate reckons the Government "are putting a net in the North Pine River to help restock". Of course this sounds unbelievable but are they extending the Woody Point green zone or anything? I've been short on a catch whenever I've gone there recently anyway.
  3. Hi guy, even though snapper closure is more than halfway complete I have a question. Are you allowed to have pre closure fillets in your freezer? I couldn't find anything about having it in your freezer. Asking for a friend. That certain friend had some snapper sashimi last night and it was delicious, but it did cross his mind that what he was doing might be illegal. How would they prove that you had not bought it from a shop? Cheers Thorbjorn and Thorbjorn's mysterious friend
  4. Hello!! This is my first post.... a very short background.... I grew up fishing from a very young age... and well a year ago i reconnected with my dad after 30 years, i'm 51... my best memories with my dad were always fishing... And well, we as a family when i was a kid, used to fish at Queensport car ferry terminal before the gateway bridge was built with alot of success.... My dad is keen to go black fishing.... Although, as i haven't fished in years, blackfish a winter fish? I live in Wynnum now, and there seems to be alot of weed around the esplanade just after the Royal Qld Yacht Squadron in the mangroves... Anyone fished there? I recently was at the Murrarie broadwalk near the old meat works site, i'm sure we used to fish for blackfish there too.... Has anyone done that with success? In the day we'd also fish at Fisherman's Island... weed on one side (where the boat ramp is now), fish on the other on the rocks... Just wondering if anyone can give an insight to what are some spots now as i'd love to take him out.... Any other shore fishing sites too welcomed... I have fished for whiting at the lota leads but too far for him to walk, especially when the tide is coming in... got caught that day sinking in sand! hahaha Thanks in advance.
  5. Heading to the story bridge to wet the line on Saturday night and wondering what tides the best to fish that area? Is there any other spots around the area to try? I was also gonna try breaky creek mouth as well.
  6. Evening all, does anyone know where I might find some numbers of yellowtail pike in the Brisbane River from Colmslie to the Port? Seems I only ever find them singularly this season. I'm looking for about 6 live baits per trip.
  7. Hey all! Little about myself, born and raised in Sydney however moved upto Brisbane with my partner. Don't have much of a social circle up here and would love to meet some new like minded people and go for a fish. I have done a fair bit of fishing in Sydney, love chasing squid, kings and the ghost of the estuary. It's amazing how many species we have up here that aren't in Sydney. I mostly do bait fishing with occasional soft plastics fishing. Currently only really doing land based fishing however will be buying a boat late this year or early next year. I work Monday to Friday in an office role and impatiently wait for the weekend to soak some baits. I'm a male in my mid 30s and looking at meeting some locals who want some company fishing.
  8. Hi everyone, just started prawning late in the season last year in northside spots around brisbane - cabbage tree creek, nudgee beach, boggy creek, north pine river. Just wondering if anyone can confirm if they're coming by any since Christmas? Have headed out a few times in Dec and Jan and I've not come by any. Hitting up the usual spots at high tide in the AM as well. Is this normal? I thought they came on in Dec and Jan?? Cheers Ben
  9. Heya i just moved to Brisbane from a different country, looking for some spots to creek/river fish around Macgregor, best of accessible by bus as I don’t always have a car. Also, I got a cheap rod off of Kmart, and I think I’ll just get some shrimp from a Cole’s. I heard from some friends that’ll be enough for a start. Thoughts?
  10. Hi fellow fishoes, I have done a bit of land based esturay fishing in Brisbane and am looking to broaden my interest to include surf/beach fishing. I wonder if somebody could recommend a beginner setups to use on Nudgee beach/ beaches in Redcliffe/ bribie island surf side. I already have a 12 ft heavy surf rod and a 9 ft veritus comp rod, together with a few 4000s reel and Penn spinfisher 735 and 835 reels( which is quite heavy). I am not very interested in the alvey as I have tried them. I wonder if some could recommend a sub 100 reel and a quality mono Line. Of course if you think I should get a better surf rod, please put it down as well. For the fish target I am aiming at Taylor /snapper, not shark alike species. Also I mostly do bait fishing. Thank you my fellow and have a great week!
  11. Hi all. Here's a quick report for Wednesday the 21st's trip out to the flats (Redcliffe region). A few nights beforehand, @AUS-BNE-FISHO, another mate Jarvis, and myself planned to chuck around some lures during the outgoing tide on the flats around Hays Inlet. Our target species was flatties, however anything else was welcome if the fishing was quiet, primarily due to the fact that our lures of choice were good all rounders. At around 10:30 we set off on the train to Kippa Ring, and caught a bus out to the hornibrook pier end of the Hornibrook/Ted smout memorial bridge. Note it was around 12:15 when we arrived at our spot. We fished the pier for a short time; Hamish knew someone who's good at cleaning up the flatties there however we had no luck. However, this time was somewhat beneficial as it gave us some time to kill while we waited for the outgoing tide to make the flats walk-able. It was a nice day. We began to fish in the cleaner water up near the bridge, walking out and wading so we could cast into the deeper channels. To start, Hamish used a 3.5 or 4 inch baitjunkie grub in the 'voltage' colour which is a similar colour to like nuclear chicken, if you're not familiar. I used a 3.2 inch baitjunkie minnow in watermelon pearl colour, which was a nice natural pale and sandy green with little red flecks. Jarvis was using some sort of powerbait plastic which I believe was a nemesis minnow. While walking we came across some nice flatty lies, ranging from 40-50cm, so this was promising. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Within around 25 minutes of fishing I was onto the first fish; a micro flatty which I didn't bother measuring, but I'd say was about 25cm or so haha. We continued to fish as a group and moved a little further up the system every few casts. Soon after my first fish I was onto another flathead at around 30cm this time. Hamish and Jarvis were still yet to get off the donut. We continued fishing for a little while and by this point we had reached the less clean water, closer to a distinguishable pipeline which came from out the mangroves. Jarvis called out to Hamish and I and told us he was onto a fish. It seemed to be putting up a decent fight from what we could see from afar, so we suspected it was a good flatty. Keep in mind Jarvis is only just getting into light tackle lure fishing so he was quite excited. To our surprise, he pulled in a 40cm or so catty , of all species, especially those that would actually eat a plastic most of the time. Although he'd caught many of these fishing the brissy river, he was still a happy man, as he had caught his first fish on a lure! Hamish and I were happy for him. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- By now the tide was pushing back in again so we figured we had better start walking back to get our bags of the mangroves before they got washed away and before we had to wade all the way back. For some last chance hookups though, we all punched out some hopeful casts on the way back. On my last cast before I called it quits, I actually thought, "as if this will catch anything", as i had casted perhaps 8 metres out into 40cm deep water from the bank. Haha. To my surprise, my polarised sunnies presented me with a nice view of a flatty jump up from his lie, swim over in a split second, and munch my lure as SOON as it splashed into the water. I was able to bring this one onto the sand, so I claimed a picture. Even though small, I had still gotten 3 fish here at my second time trying out the spot, so i was satisfied. Small On the home stretch jarvis came across some line tangled within a little drain into the mangroves where there was some crab pots. On the end, there was a nice atomic hardbody of some sort connected to a rotten carcass of another catty. Seems like they were more common around here than initially expected. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This was pretty much where we ended our session but we did have some fun on the train ride back gambling our tackle with each other flipping a coin. We all ended up 'winning' some new lures and hamish got that Atomic which I'm sure he will enjoy throwing for some jacks off the kayak during an upcoming trip we're going on. --- Cheers, Charlie. Hope you have had a nice christmas day today. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tides: 12:20 PM, 1M (arrival). 2:17PM, 0.6m, LOW. Moon: About 95% moon, increasing. Tackle: Charlie: 1-3kg Abu salty stage, 2500 diawa exceler. 10lb braid, 14lb fluoro. 3.2' baitjunkie minnow, Prolure Clone Prawn 92mm. (all fish caught on baitjunkie minnow). Hamish: Abu veritas, 2500 diawa tierra, 10lb braid, 10lb fluoro. 4 inch baitjunkie grub; voltage. 3.2 inch baitjunkie minnow; gudgeon or motoroil colour. (correct me if I'm wrong) Jarvis: Unknown shimano 6'6 rod w/ abu blackmax reel or something, 8lb mono straight-through. Powerbait nemesis minnow, savage gear 3d minnow. A fairly successful day for some.
  12. Hi friends, Since holidays are near I am planning a kayak fishing trip with a friend near Green island. We will launch from Wellington point and paddle to the island and stay in the water for a few hours. I am planning to launch 2 hours before first light if weather is good. Will have safety light and vest on. Can someone offer some important advice and a few tips? Thanks and have a good holiday!
  13. G'day Folks, Just wondering where some good carp spots around Brisbane/Gold Coast are?
  14. Hi guys Rice here, just here to ask if anyone's had experience fishing Wynnum foreshore/Creek Went for a flick there a few times with my mate on the Wynnum Creek breakwall during the outgoing tide, never had much luck; in fact we didn't catch anything yesterday even though it was purported to be an "excellent" day as well and there were plenty of bait fish around Anyway, I'm hoping that the lack of fish is due to my inexperience and not because the creek is dead. The jetty can get quite busy so it's nice to have a close-by alternative
  15. G'day guys, I've been lurking the board for a few weeks, thought I would introduce myself. My old man is a mad keen fisho and got me into it. He used to live in Brisbane and I have been following in his footsteps fishing, mainly Brisbane River and offshoots as well as the Pine River and the Pumicestone Passage on the Bribie side. I'm always hearing that Bribie is a nursery but so far I've mostly collected a lot of donuts up that way. I have managed a few legal fish mainly in Brisbane out of boggy creek - have attached a few pics. I fish soft-plastics and hard bodies, without much success on the latter. Have steered clear of bait so far. I'm currently stuck in 40cm flathead purgatory, but hoping to put up some monsters to rival the big dog soon... Cheers
  16. Hi all. Here's another one of my intermittent reports that I rarely put up, mainly because @AUS-BNE-FISHOdoes for me . Anyway, Hamish and I had decided quite last minute that we would go for a fish today at Boggy Creek, and try our luck targeting whatever was around on lures (primarily soft plastics). Hamish's Dad drove us up to the designated spot at around 7 in the morning, and we arrived around 7:35 AM. It was looking promising as it was relatively quiet in terms of people/other fishos, except for a couple blokes were launching their kayaks and tinnies. It was a cool-ish morning and when we arrived it was almost a high-tide. (high was at 9am i believe) We walked to a spot that gave us some access to the water, and within a few casts Hamish was onto a low 40s flattie that completely ripped up Hamish's finger (he had won, but at what cost? ). (excuse the bad photos) Flatty We continued to cast for a little longer at this spot and hamish picked up another flathead that flicked itself off the lure which was probably about 30cm so not too sizeable, however I was still on the donut. Feeling like trying out somewhere else, we walked further upstream to another couple openings to the water and fished at each spot for around 30-40 minutes, with no luck. At this point it was the middle of the day and the tide was going back out, and the temperature was getting hot and uncomfortable. After randomly flicking little spots all around until we got picked up by my parents with no avail, the heat was getting the best of us and our luck was looking slimmer by the minute. More and more people were turning up either fishing, launching boats, or flying through the waterway on jetskiis. With bait lobbed into the water by some other fisherman and the water being churned up by other people, it was dismal to say the least. When my parents arrived we headed back, with Hamish off the donut and myself still on the donut. Overall it was a partially successful trip for Hamish but not for me. Gear: Charlie: Daiwa Exceler 2-6kg Daiwa Legalis LT 2500d 10lb 4x braid with 14lb fc rock sunline leader. --------------------------------------------- Abu Garcia salty stage KRX elite - 1-3 kg Shimano nexave 1000 8lb 8x braid 6 and 10lb fluoro leaders. ---------------------------------------------- Lures: Various paddletails, berkley nemesis 4 inch curly tail, 2.5 inch grubs. ---------------------------------------------- Hamish: Abu garcia veritas (2-4kg?) Flatty skull found lying in some mangroves from probably a 60cm model or something. Pretty gross apologies for anyone freaked out by it
  17. Hi I was wondering if your are allowed to take things like rods and fishing carts onto the city cats because I can’t drive and there are lots of spots I want to try out that are near city cat terminals thanks Thorbjörn
  18. What's up guys Rice here, been fishing the Saint Lucia/Toowong stretch of the river pretty frequently and it's been quite productive so far, so I just wanted to share a report about today's 1 hour session On a 2-4kg Kmart rod and reel combo, I first got onto a decent bream after a quick fight. Quite happy with this one as it was definitely a PB, and probably went for high 30s Not long after I also landed a catfish of a similar size. No photos, but it went back into the drink as per usual However, I mostly wanted to ask about this last one that I caught I caught one a few days ago about twice the size as well. Been asking around and people either tell me it's a baby Jew or a river perch. As a consensus hasn't really been reached, I thought to ask the experts here. What do you guys think?
  19. Hi i recently caught my first threaddy from the Brisbane river on a live mullet. I am hoping to catch some more so any spots, baits and techniques would be greatly appreciated. i live in Bulimba so any spots near there would be good. thanks Thorbjorn
  20. Hi guys just had a bit of a run in with a Middle Eastern/Indian looking couple at Orleigh Park near West End, had a look at their catch and could maybe count around 20 bream inside a little bucket, not bigger than 10cm. I ask them to release their catch if they could but they just told me to piss off, so I ended up calling the fisheries. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't have been able to do much about it though since the fishers were long gone by the time they arrived (they might have been wary of me as I could see them watching in the distance as I made the phone call). SO what would you guys do in this case? Any tips? Some might say just call the fisheries instantly but it just feels bad snitching you know so I gave them a chance. PS I tried fishing West End pontoon in the arvo today trying to catch some flathead, but only caught one undersized bream within 30 minutes, would like to know if anyone had any advice. Cheers!!
  21. What's up guys, so yesterday, I decided to keep a bream for myself just to see what actually killing and preparing your catch was like (I do customer service in a seafood shop). This one went for about 28cm I tried my hand at scaling, cleaning, and fileting as well but I did a pretty **** job of it since it was my first time. So yeah, that night I had the bream with some broccoli and fried rice for dinner, and it was actually surprisingly nice Anyway, I wanted to know what you guys thought of eating out of the Brisbane River, especially in recent times following the floods. There seems to be conflicting opinions concerning this; some people wouldn't poke a fish with a 6 foot pole, while others are keeping just about every legal fish they catch. I live in the Toowong/West End region which I've heard was a pretty dirty reach of the river but I'm no expert after all. Any comments are appreciated
  22. Sup guys this is Rice here, just caught my first few fish in the Brisbane River and they were bream. Sadly didn't have a ruler to measure them with but I think the second one was legal, either way I put them back in the water. PS shout out to the guy who took the first photo for me maybe you are reading this post right now lol
  23. Looks like the river is open for boating again after the flood.
  24. Howdy, I've found this forum many times whilst searching google for tips and suggestions. It asked me join so I could see all your pics, so I thought I should. Might be fun and educational for us all. I've got no interest in boating, and do quite well from the land anyway - mainly canals, estuaries, boat ramps, pontoons, marinas, and occasionally the beach. Almost always at night, once a week on average. Only target larger species. I was sick and tired of targeting smaller species and getting bugger all, so I thought why not target only larger species and get bugger all? At least if I only catch one or 2 in a session that it would be more memorable. Most common species caught are tailor, ray, catfish and pike eel. Usual baits are mullet strips and pilchard. Would love to find a jew but they don't seem to be as keen in the cutbait as the species mentioned above. My next mission is to learn the ways of the cast net. Thanks!
  25. Hi everyone, first time posting I would like some help identifying a species of crab that keeps entering my crab pot in Hawthorne Photos attached below When I use to catch mud crabs >10 years ago (exact same spot) they were the large with a greenish appearance, with a paddle like rear leg on either side, similar to the ones sold in all fish markets, but for the past two days I keep getting these ones, no paddle and white under the claw, dark black on the top side So my question is - What species are they, are they edible??, and whats the legal size for them? (Only kept catching small ones) All crabs were released Thanks in advance Philip
