@Old Scaley sent me a link the other day about spotted mackerel. The season is almost upon us. I also followed a link to an article on schoolies. Trolling was the main thrust of the articles. I realised I needed a new rod for trolling to pair with my Penn Fathom 25 2 speed reel, so hit up the tackle shop yesterday and selected a locally made Live Fibre 8-15 kilo rod as well as some trolling accessories. Now we just need to get some decent weather to get out there and test it all.
Hi all So my Dad's Barra King reel Size 55 has been for it's service, drag upgrade, and now I think it's time I start using it a bit more. We have the reel (about to collect), which is ideal for live baiting or bait fishing in general as it has a ratchet, meaning it's got the lovely option where you can click a button to get an awesome sound and then get to your proper drag when fishing/landing something, but my dilemma is now that I have no rod for it. The original rod my Dad bought for it was an Ugly Stik, but it's aged enough and is now more of an antique (he got to watch his mates catch barra but he never got barra ). There are a couple rods I thought of - the first option that came to mind might be a Live Fibre rod - @Sneaky1 if there's one you could recommend in the 8-15KG range then that would be great. I have my eyes on the RLF9 if anyone's ever heard of that one. Ideally the rod will have enough whip for a decent cast with a relatively heavy lure (say a soft vibe or big hardbody) but it has enough butt strength in it that it won't go like a bloody strand of spaghetti when pulling up an OK fish. I know that might be a bit too much to ask in a rod but I'm not sure. My price range is probably $200-$300, but if you really think I could spend more/my dad could spend more then that may be an option. Any more questions about it, ask away... But I would really love to hear some suggestions. Cheers Hamish
