  1. Took my brother for a mackerel trip today. With a week break on the Spanish Mackerel closure opening up today they were the target species. With 4 super fresh baits acquired we went straight to one of my favourite spots ,drove over it , and there was an extremely large school of Mac’s at home , they were stacked 24 metres deep. I put two tuna into the water, they were dead but still bleeding , we both knew it was going to be a sure thing that they’d go off super quick . I’d just finished putting the second bait out and the first one went off. Couple of minutes later he was in the esky . My brother turned the boat around and ran back over the fish , I deployed the second bait , it was bang again, stupidly I grabbed the rod again ,my brother was pissing him self laughing as he knew I was already stuffed from the first fish . After a few swear words , he gaffed the second fish , then we went and got a couple of Grassies before heading home .
  2. Took my brother for an exploratory Mackerel fish this morning . I usually don’t bother chasing them till after the Christmas holidays and the crowds die down, but with the new closures and bag limits in full force , We decided to make the most of the current situation whilst there was a decent weather window. Heaps of boats on the water for a mid week day ,tides and moon were all wrong but beggars cannt be choosers. My brother is still recovering from a recent operation , and wasn’t allowed to lift more than 3 kgs , so he was on driving duty for the morning and I was on the business end of the rods .He could not find any bait , only big schools of Batfish and Surgeon fish , feeding on the surface . We had plenty of old marks ,so just trolled over them looking for the odd fish. Missed the first hit after a very solid hookup - due to a bite off , I think another fish simply just sniped the swivel off - “Big time Bummer “- anyway we continued on and moved well away from the flotilla of boats , once we found some clear space ,it was then bang bang , two Spanish in the esky and off we went home , both freezers now stocked with some nice Spanish Fillets and some crab bait sorted for the next crab'n mission. regards Neil
  3. I took advantage of a break in the strong westerly winds this morning and snuck out for a fishin’mission. Forgot it was school holidays and their was a fair few boats out. Had a very effective fisheries Qld visit at about 9 am , they just pulled up along side in their rubber ducky and I didn’t even have to pull in my troll baits ,just kept trolling and they did their checks on the move .Life jackets , Rego , flares etc etc all passed . Strangely they didn’t want to see my Epirib because I was less than 2 km offshore , which I thought was a bit strange because next stop to the east would have been Fiji . Anyway it was friendly , well conducted and didn’t waste any of my time . Had three hits for the morning and got all three fish - 2 Spanish which were pretty much a pigeon pair at about 12 to 15kg and a big stinky Barracuda that was release to annoy someone else.
  4. Thought I’d better have a mackerel fish on the last day before the next closure.Started trolling at 745am and it didn’t take long to find some.In fact the Spanish were absolutely on fire this morning , but unfortunately had to feed the sharks well to put a few specimens in the ice box . Came away with a nice feed and a sore back. Had to sacrifice probably 10 fish to get 3 but managed to break in my new fishing shirt!
  5. Got my mackerel bait all sorted , they’re all cryovaced , and frozen down ready for the reopening of the Spanish Mackerel season . Let the count down begin!
  6. Did my last mackerel trip this morning till the southern Qld closure finishes on 21 st of March. There is a week gap from 21 st Feb till the 1 st of March but I suspect it will be like the opening of duck season and very crowded that week .I’ll leave them alone now till the end of March and target other fish for awhile. For those brave enough to go near a boat ramp over the Australia Day weekend , there’s still plenty of Spanish out there ,and I suspect a lot will get caught if people have the skill to get them past the sharks . Got a ok pair of small fish today in pretty good conditions. The bait was a bit scarce where I was , but found a few fish without having to look too far.As usual , you’ll see My best fish got taxed . For those interested , I’ve attached a sounder photo of what I fished this morning. regards Neil
  7. Got over my Dose of Covid prior to Xmas , then got some flu thing just after Xmas Finally felt well enough on the weekend to do a decent fishing trip . Left home at 4am this morning ,fished the bottom first up on the rising tide and got 6 nice Grassy Sweetlip and an assortment of other colourful ooglies , then on top of the tide put out a couple of troll baits and got 3 nice Spanish then headed in . Unfortunately when I photographed the biggest Spanish for the summer comp I didn’t notice the Green ID tag slipped under the fish , so could only enter the two small fish . Major Bummer! As it was probably a 25kg fish. Bit of wind early but it glassed out to a beautiful day.
  8. My goal is to catch a Spanish Mackerel, I’ve been chasing these for years with no luck, especially out of Yeppoon in Central Qld of late where they appear to be extinct there. So the plan is this: I have 2 weeks off in January/February and Im planning a trip down to Mooloolaba Sunny Coast area. From my research that time and place seem to be my best chance of running into one of these oceanic speedsters. I’m taking my 581 Mclay Crossover Cuddy Cab, 140hp Suzuki and plan to pester the local tackle shops for info on where and when while there. Will mainly troll, lures, and rigged swimming dead baits. But will mix it up depending on conditions etc. I am taking the following offshore type rods, 1. PE3-4 Demon Blood OH Rod, with a Saltiga 30HA Star Drag running 50lb braid (250m) 2. PE4-5 Demon Blood OH Rod Saltiga 35 Lever Drag with 60lb Braid. (330m) The overheads will run a top-shot of 50 0r 60lb nylon/flurocarbon for a bit of shock absorption, perhaps 20m or so. Also taking a Nomad Blue Water 7” spin stick, PE 2.5-4 with a Certate SW 10000-H and 47lb braid (300m) for throwing small stick baits and flasher lures etc. Is there anything im missing, or recommend I need for this mission?
  9. HI Guys Lost a big Mackerel on the weekend and an expensive Rapala Deep Diver which is fine but I have been mixing it up lately to see the difference with Strikes and land rates. Sadly this one seem to be cut or busted on the cloth part of the wind on leader but it was the only hook up of the day whilst we have another three with traces in the water that didnt get a strike. Does anyone have personal trolling experience and not use Wire Traces with their lures. Interested to hear your stories and best success stories Cheers
  10. Hey Legends, I have often been told the best way to catch Spanish Mack Trucks is to slow troll a rigged Gar. I have heard lots of methods with 3 x 6/0 Gangs and a cast net sinker or premade rigs and using soft plastic squid heads over the top but I have actually never done it. Does anyone recommend it and do you have any tips on how to rig and how fast to troll etc?
