The question to also ask is how much are you ok to spend? and will you only want 1 rod or 2 so you can both fish or swap rods when one gets snagged or rejigged
Factoring in you will need to add other essentials for a reasonable fishing experience.
-tackle box/bag
-pliers, scissors
-hooks, sinkers, swivels, fishing line

I'd suggest a 7 foot Ugly Stik in the 2-4kg range. Will take a fair beating without breaking. Light enough for bream and flatties and strong enough to manage a big one.

Hi @motherofboys
An Ugly Stik Gold on a Shimano Sienna or Sedona would work. Around 2-4KG or 3-6KG. 1000-3000 size reel. About ten pound braid or mono. 👍
Cheers Hamish

A few questions to narrow down an answer -
Where would he be using it from - land, boat, surf beach, river, freshwater or saltwater etc ?
Would he likely be using lures or bait ?
What kind of fish would he be after ?

Just wondering if anyone can recommend a good quality first fishing rod for a 9-10 year old boy? Thanks!
