There’s a few different ways through there but none are good on an outgoing tide with a bit of swell. I usually preferred sticking close to the island as there was usually a small channel on the inside of the sandbanks that wasn’t as exposed to all the swell but it changed pretty much every trip. One trip out there with @Drop Bear we had 6ft curlers only about 2m apart which made for a very slow and careful trip out.

Thanks all for the feedback. At least I’ll have a good idea what to look out for next time.
cheers.

It can be a nasty patch of water. Wind against tide - especially. To go in closer or not will depend on the conditions on the day/hour/minute.
If the tide is up there can be a fair bit of water in close but if you have a northerly wind/swell you can get a shore break.
I don't think you will find one definitive answer sorry.

Hi All
Last weekend I returned from off Cape Moreton to Bribie via the Inner Freeman Channel. Easterly swell (not huge) and also an outgoing tide turned the channel into a washing machine. Very hairy conditions that I don't want to temp again. The only other option was to go around the northern end of the Outer Freeman Channel, but it is a lot longer trip.
I saw a couple of boats heading in the same direction as me on the Inner Channel but they were a LOT closer to the Moreton Island shore line. So my question is, is hugging the shoreline a better option in these conditions or did they just cop the same battering we did?
Thanks

That is my usual route heading back to Bribie Island from Morton, I usually don't have too many issues with that area, sometimes there is wave action there so I just zig zag certain areas till I go past it. Off the top of my memory, you just have to give the actual Comboyuro point a bit of a wider gap as there are submerged rocks that extend out from the point itself that you want to avoid, so in other words, don't get too close to it. There are a few other areas to be careful of, Yule bank is another area that I am cautious crossing as there are quite a few areas that are quite shallow on the way back, usually you can see the waves breaking over those shallow areas so I just detour around them. I generally start on about 260 degree (approximate) course from outside of Bulwar and that mostly misses most of the bad shallow areas until you hit the Western Bank.
I just basically watch the ocean and avoid areas that are suspect even if it means a long detour. If you get closer to Morton Island it will protect you somewhat from the easterly swells till you get closer to Combo point and depending on the tide and wind the swell gets pushed around the corner, so it can become North Easterly which messes things up a bit.

I've only done it once, but was with an experienced boatie at the time
( @benno573 ) and we went pretty close to the beach on the Comby corner and it was fine on a bit of a choppy day 🤮 . I'd say we were around 50 or so metres from shore and it was a breeze.
Outgoing tide is always going to be a bit more "fun" though and I'm not sure if we had that. Hopefully he will be along and comment on this further.
