  1. Thanks
davostephens got a reaction from ellicat in Dont Cut Fishes Throats To Bleed.
I see people are always cutting fishes throats to bleed them. By doing this they are actually cutting both sides of the pump and they wont properly bleed out. It does work to a degree BUT there is a better way that is more effective and il explain why.
Do the usual bat over the head to knock em out or brain spike. Then lift up the Gill plate and cut thru a whole set of gills on one side with either a knife or a set of snips, Whatever you have. Cut where the gills U curve the most (near their pectoral fin area). Then if your boat permits put the fish in the live bait tank or bucket of water , or for say a tuna strop rope their tail and hang over side for 5-10 mins to bleed out.. watch out for seals and sharks. After 5-10 mins then put your fish in the ice salt water slurry in  eski. Fish are best quality when left in icewater slurry for few hours to set before filleting.

By cutting their throats you are cutting both sides of the pump. (heart) It will keep beating but wont be causing any flow of blood.
BUT  By cutting the gills the heart keeps pumping for 5-10 mins and keeps sending the blood to the gills to be re oxygenated. Thus eventualy pumping nearly all the blood out through the cut gills.. By putting in water (not ice water) the blood wont congeal and allow a close to full bleed out. Head down if able. Then into eski.. This way they are also not rolling around in an eski of congealed blood to. yuk. Water/ice slurry will be a light red /pink
Next time you catch 2 of the same species, say king fish, or  spanish mackeral, Do the old throat cut on one and Gill cut on the other. Allow a full 10 min water bucket bleed out.  When you fillet compare the meat and it will become apparent the difference. The fish will also freeze alot better and taste better once defrosted. .Taste better in general especialy if you sashimi it.
Hope this helps someone. Especialy if you catch tailor.. but should realy be applied to any fish. Dunno how much better it could actually make Aussie Salmon though. Guess theres always room for improvement there.
And you get a better dead fish photo, no throat hanging out.

yeah used to be one of mine too.. until
I was in bcf and z man were clearout for 5$ pack, so thought would give a go.
My first cast on a paddlerz 5 inch scented bad shad saw a 8 kg mackeral come in.
then another, then a few small doggy mac. I went home and left the lure on my rod, It spent 6 weeks on my rod in the shed, Next trip out i dipped it in gulp juice for sh$ts and giggles, 9 kg cobia, 9 kg mac, 2 doggy mac, AND it was stil in good nik. then i lost it to a fish and the reef. But that one lure caught about 40 kg-50 kg of fish and the most brutaly toothed fish there is.. yes i put 5 cm of wire above my jighead.
When i used gulp i was lucky to survive one doggy mac strike, although they did sorta work. But never like this one did

we run it in river together for 15 mins, couldnt get it to go off. just as we were talking when at idle i revved up to head to boat ramp and then it went off(rev limiter).. Then revved a bit and water flowed through quicker and away we went, couldnt get it to go off at speed any more, only when you idle. So hence why i think it is a flow problem.
rev limiter went off, used his temp probe on the head around water jacket area. To ensure it was a over heat, And then crossed the wires on the over heat rev limiter and it was proven a over heat problem.
Then the motor was stripped and cleaned around the water jacket, Wasnt too bad but some scaley build up. Not enough for the mechanic to say theres the deffinite issue. So i run it out to fishing spot 6 mile away, no issue.. until idle and got anchor ready, then took off and rev liliter kicks in again. Same for trip home. Where previous to this trip if i ran over 3/4 revs the rev limiter would kick in.

My way of thinking is the new pump housing, impellor etc has increased flow to keep cool enough, But when you run hard for a while and idle the slower flow going against a restriction somewhere lower in the cooling system is seeing the overheat.
Hopefully this rinse sorts it lower and i dont have to pull it apart again.

Hi I am new here but not to fishin.
    Anyone used starbrite descale flush?
Had 200 2stroke yammy 30 hp overheat issues.
Outboard mechanic and myself have cleaned all water jacket galleries etc, new gaskets, new pump housing, new impellor.
It seems to only overheat when at idle after good run. not a hell of a lot of water thru telltale but still steady flow.
It has already cost me 750$. Now the mechanic is inclined to lift the whole powerhead of to look at a few lower galleries.. i can only assume another 500$ plus
Has anyone used one of these descalers, I always flush motor but then it sits there 6 weeks plus while at work

I have been using gulps for some time. Jerk Shadz. They seem to tail curl or go moldy in pack once opened.
I also think they have changed there make up as a few years ago i used to get a couple fish on one gulp, now one bite or fish and there gone or ruined..
When i was in tassy 10 years ago in a spot in Bradys lagoon i got 17 good trout in a morning and arvo.. Ten years latersame time/lure etc everything, Not one.. But Thats not a real litmus test for them, But got me thinking im sure these things used to swim better
