@burger  Remember the green peas. Still use them with scent.
Today I was using green weed. Plenty on the rocks.
    Cheers.

With the big swells on the beach & rocks 3 to 4 meters we headed for somewhere Quiter.
Arrived around sunrise, sunny & cool.
Blackfish & bream were the go.
Caught two nice blackfish straight away. Went quite. Moved to the south side of the bridge.
Waited for a while, then two bream. Puppy was happy.
Moved further up the chanel. Landed two more blackfish.
That was enough. Called it a day.
    Cheers.

Thanks Brett. Yeah mate I’ve moved it, looked at it, picked it up a few times and ignored it! I’ve got decals and a new first guide for it just waiting for the opportunity to get it stripped down. Will have to sand and recoat the blank too which is messy work.

Just finished this spin rod for a mate. 7’5 graphite blank built for a 5k Stradic loaded with 30lb braid. All Fuji components. Loving how it turned out!
This will be used to chase snapper and trout on plastics up to 1oz, as well as tuna and mackerel on slugs up to 40g. Could even cast small stickbaits at reef edges too - proper Swiss Army knife!

Around 1986 I got to read a fishing journal from a elderly fellow that had recently died then. He lived at Shorncliffe and noted the fish he caught after work several days a week to feed his family from the late 1800's to about 1960ish. He seldom got days off work where he could go fishing for a day.
Snapper bream and mackerel were commonly caught...flathead were mentioned every week or so but not as common as snapper and bream. Mackerel were seasonal and he would exclusively target them when around, ignoring the usual fish. Mackerel were mainly 2 to 3 feet long.
Kingfish were a prized fish, probably because it was land based and handlined being a tough fish to land. Jewfish were known as soapies, he did not mention a large one.
Numbers of fish caught were generally about 4 to 6 fish...enough for the evening meal i guess.
Seldom did this man spend more than about an hour fishing and always land based with cat gut lines.
Baits were generally off cuts from previous captures, although he did use ox heart and liver at times.
Weed beds were thick right to the foreshore.
From memory he encountered sharks only in the summer months.
He seldom mentioned crabs....and if he did it was large numbers....potato sacks full.
    Eels were commonly complained about.
Weather from what i gathered and remember reading was not unlike our weather now....droughts and floods / flushes, prolonged winds and hot or cold temps.
He noted captures declining as well.

I remember @Andrew_P telling us that Moreton Bay is a good place to raise the kids as it is full of nutrients, so that is why we find a few of the more northern species showing up here.
@crazywalrus has caught Nannygai in the Bay at least 10 years ago. I have been hearing of northern species being caught in and around the Bay for quite a while. I have a spot on the southern end of the Sunny Coast where we regularly get undersize Red Throat Emperor, although last time @benno573 managed a 46cm version.
Perhaps due to the extra people fishing, since every man and his dog bought a boat during the Covid years, and the proliferation of fishing pages on Facebook are combining to highlight more that these northern species are caught locally. From my observations of social media, Peel Island seems to throw up more than its fair share with crayfish, Coral Trout and Nannies.
Maybe these fish have been local in greater numbers in the past, but with less fishers and no real means to communicate the catch, or even a reluctance to divulge, we never heard about them. No doubt technology is playing its part also.

I definitely agree to the fish getting wise on what not to touch…at least the older bigger ones.
I wasnt fishing down in Brisbane in the 70’s or 80’s, we were in Bundy and havent fished up there since we left so it is great to get some perspectives on things.
There is no doubt there is significant fishing pressure but I imagine the actual take would be less that it was - I mean Dad and I used to bring home 100 whiting or bream in a session back in the day.  It was fill that basket and feed the family fish until next trip, no one even thought the numbers could reduce.  I do feel confident that bag limits and a lot better educated people about sustainability is doing a lot of good.

    Hi All.
It has been raining here for over a week. Still raining today with more to come.
Thursday was the only fine day. Sunny.
Arrived around Sunrise. Had the place to myself.
Walked around nothing happening. Then caught my first bream.
Moved again up near the rocks, caught two whiting & two more bream.
Bait was Blood worms & live nippers.
That was enough. Headed for the Norah Head coffee shop for breakfast.
    Cheers.

Went to western arm with Rick and Joy. Shrimp traps a bit light on but good size. We were restricted to fishing in the bays due to the wind. Found one spot that was ok but as the boat was yawing a lot we kept on getting snagged besides feeding the prolific barred grunter. Found a couple pf trees where we were able to tie off fore and aft but the barred grunter still prolific to the delight of the eagle. We finished off early with a total of 26 bass ,one tandanus and a nice yella. All tagged and released,

I find the tide sizes don’t really affect it too much , you’ve just got to be prepared to move around and position yourself in the right spots during your session down there. It’s always about knowing how the puzzle works ie  how when why and where  you anchor your  boat and  present your baits. Whiting will move to where the food is., think like the fish .Sounds like you tried a few spots ,but  hey , not all was lost , at least you’ve found where they don’t bite on those tides. The next trip will  be better.
    regards

Consider a Mooloolaba Pick anchor https://www.whitworths.com.au/mooloolaba-pick-anchor
Thats what all the boats have on the swains that I have been on.
Shackle to the top then lay chain down the shaft and heavy zip ties to what you would normally attach to.  If its stuck you just pull back over the top and it snaps the zip ties and you then pull the anchor up from the head.
Mate bought a very expensive version of one (cannot remember the name) but it uses a sheer bolt to hold the fins in place and all you do it drive over the top and it sheers the pin and the fins collapse.  A guy up in Mackay makes them.  Very neat.

3 metres of 8mm will be sufficient.
I run that on a 4.7m ally runabout with a 4kg sand anchor or reef anchor. Never had any problems with the reef anchor pulling or the chain getting stuck. I wouldn't go rope to anchor, as rope has some buoyancy, so your anchor may not set properly. Also there is the risk of the rope wearing through on reef.
Anchor socks are great, but the drawback is they collect and hold sediment.
