Hey guys, theres been heaps of tuna around as you probably would have seen over the past week and a bit. Im gonna go try get some tomorrow but want to ask what small lures you recommend since longies seem to only be hitting small lures. Been getting mack tuna on any lure i just out but longies are in the mix and only eating tiny bait. Also if i put on a 10g, 20g metal would that be too light you reckon for longies, i know i wont cast is as far as i would if i was using a 50-60g but that smaller profile might be worth trying to get the bite.

caught a few solid macks, and a longy around 90ish on a 15g gillies slug thats now been retired lol. They can definetely handle the tuna as long as you dont go all out on them. I had locked up the drag on my 4k trying to get that longy away from the sharks. Did get it up unscathed but the split ring was hanging on by the balls haha.

    Good Afternoon Everybody.

I went for an evening fish last night, approx 8 PM, and was using 2.5 inch grubs. I landed a bream which was just legal and a the same for a flathead. Then I didn't seem to get a hit for 30-45 minutes before I this happened.

Cast into 1 - 2m deep water between pontoons. Rocky and oyster infested bottoms. letting is drop slowly then a quick jig and small reel back in. Within a few seconds of sinking under the pontoon I wen't to flick the lure off the bottom, however, it felt like it was snagged, after trying a bit to get it 'unsnagged' I felt a few head shakes. The battle began, reeling it in but away from the oysters. It didn't give to much of a crazy fight but was quite weighty. Got the flathead to to the surface, only having a headtorch on but I could clearly see this was a new PB for me, it was well over 60cm. I saw the hookup was good so my only option was to try and lift it out of the water onto the pontoon, then tragedy struck, my 10lb fluro leader was snapped/shreaded, knots were fine though.....

So, this is the 2nd time in a month I've had a decent flatty and not landed it. I'm privileged enough to live water front in Sydney and have access to approx, 150-200m of sea wall/water fronts my neighbours have allowed me to fishing along. I'm lazy and only have a big landing net I use mainly for on the tinny and for jews. Carrying it around back and forth gets annoying. I'm wonder if you have any suggestions for smaller nets I could clip onto my pants and let it hang from my shorts I could quickly grab off and scoop a fish out of the river??

All suggestions are greatly appreciated, I'm devastated I lost a great fish and am looking for ways to ensure this isn't likely to occur again.

    Regards,

    Peter

Whenever I go out landbased I never have a net with me. In those situations best bet is to hold the leader with the fish in the water and grab the jighead if your game haha. Might end up with a hook in the finger if your not careful but i guess if you want it bad enough aha......

I've had no issues with my Minn Kota - just make sure to wash down with fresh and lubricate as per manufacturer instructions after each use.

I did previously buy a brand new watersnake from BCF but this was over 10 years ago, so probably not relevant. The deploy mechanism failed on that unit (warranty replacement through BCF).

Are you on any particular sounder setup? If I had my time again I would probably also consider motorguide which can integrate with my lowrance setup. The Minn Kota doesn't integrate with Lowrance.

A handy feature on the Minn Kota is Spot-lock Jog (move 5 foot up, down, left, right with push of 1 button) but it's not really a deal breaker - Just very handy.

Not too fussed on linking the sounder with the elec. will likely pick up a new sounder with sidescan though when i grab the electric. Is there any soldering involved when setting up the wiring? what do i need to get? Ive just got a regular deep cycle 12v battery atm.

That particular watersnake does have spotlock, but all im reading is bad reviews. Think i might just go with the minn kota and hopefully save myself some troubles.

Also only fishing in the salt pretty much, around the bay and creeks etc, my tinny has a curved bow which might be a challenge but i should be able to rig something up.

Where are you going to use it and for what purpose? Is it for moving you around freshwater dams where you are not allowed petrol motors? Are you happy to use an anchor wherever you fish?  Or are you fishing salt water. If it is salt, I would definitely be looking at a unit with spot lock capability. For me, that is by far the most valuable function and you will regret not having it and start saving for a more expensive motor.
Like most things, you get what you pay for. Don’t rush in, really think about what you want out of the motor and then look at which motor suits that need. I have had more than 3 years of trouble free running with my MK and can’t imagine not having it now.

I'm sure there's somebody that can fix it, even if it will only be good for a decoration.

But despite havecrods fixed in the past, I've never really trusted them again.

It's one reason I like good 2 piece as well as multi piece travel rods, I buy the rod and if I like it, I buy spare end sections for when I break them.

when i broke the tip off my sharpshooter i just got it repaired, and then it fished fine for the next couple of weeks and took some solid beatings from fish until i stood on it and finished it off haha.

Hi guys ive just bought a PE 2/3 rod. I plan to put a 3000 certate but would that be too small.

    Thanks guys

pe 2-3?? To match a rod like that you'd have to go with a 4k wouldn't you? Despite that, I still target 50-60cm trevally on my sharpshooter and 2500 caldia combo, and have also landed tuna on that setup as well. All depends what lures your throwing and if your on a boat, that rod could basically do it all with a 4k on it haha.

  8. checked fuel line and filter, no issues there. called up stones corner marine and they reckoned carby straight away. Wasnt too keen on the 5 week wait and the inevitable hit to the wallet though so went and got some carby cleaner, watched a few vids and took it apart. bit of cleaner in the jets and gallery, compressed air, and i chucked it back in.

Was a very nervous first pull but she started straight away and ran sweet at idle for 15 mins or so, back on the water the next day.

  9. i had a closer look this arvo, took the fitting on the motor side off and attempted to pump fuel but couldnt get any flow/fuel whatsoever (with a full tank as well). took the pickup out of the tank and the mesh on the end is still there with no holes. The primer bulb will push air out but then suck it back in?

  10. Had the boat out the other day, got 1k out from the ramp, and the motor cut out suddenly, and then wouldnt start for 5 mins. It happened about three or four times again before i called it and went back in. Noticed that the primer blub was struggling to pump fuel, and was very slightly sucked in when i was moving. Valve on the tank was open so it wasnt causing a vaccum. I could prime it but it was a lot harder than usual, and then it would run for another minute or so at full throttle before chugging and then dying again. Has this happened to any of you? I am thinking either a blockage in the fuel line, dodgy fitting on the tank end, or possibly a blocked/dirty fuel filter???

    Thanks in advance.
