    Skeg Repair

Hi guys, Broke the skeg on my new driveway which is a nightmare to get up. Can I just bolt one a skeg guard like the photo or does it need welding? Don't want to replace whole bottom on an old 2 banger.

    Pod or no pod?

Hello all, Pretty new to the whole forum thing but I thought I would reach out to get some advice or hear some experiences from others. I’m in the market for a new boat and I am considering purchasing a Quintrex Fishseeker and modifying it to suit my needs, i.e. console, larger fuel tank etc. One thing I would want to do is have more hp as the current max on the hull is 90 (maybe go up to 130/140hp). knowing that I will have to get re-rated my question is should I be considering having to install a pod or just go straight off the transom as is? Which would perform better? Cheers.
  4. Hi. I have a 2006 115 Yamaha 4 stroke which I have owned for almost 10 years. A couple of years ago after consulting the manual I decided to flush it using the inline attachment on the motor. Did this for about 12 months. About 12 months ago I started using saltaway and returned to using the ear muffs to flush. Today I had the motor serviced. Two of the three water jacket anodes were so badly corroded and salted up it took an hour to remove them. Luckily no apparent damage to the head at this time. My mechanic who I have been using for a long time said the 6-12 months I used the flush attachment was enough to salt up and seize the anodes. You could see the saltaway residue where it had started to clear the salt but it had a big job to do. Morale 1 of the story: The flush port on the motor is designed to ensure planned obselecense and should not be used. Moral 2 to the story: Only ever flush your engine in a drum or with ear muffs Mechanic said he had seen motors at 100hrs so badly corroded due to owners only using the flushing port that they had to be written off. Now I have had a boat for most of the last 45 years and except for that short period I referred to above, have always flushed in a drum or with ears. No more using the flush port for me as today I dodged a very expensive bullet.
  5. Hey, Tried to find my answer on google but it was all 2 stroke related, or about winterizing your boat. My 1 year old 150 4 stroke yammy hasn't been started in 4 weeks. How many weeks should you leave it until one needs to start their outboard up to use a bit of fuel? Cheers, Ryan

    Leakage

Hello I have a 2001 Freedom Gateway Runabout 5 metres W/75 HP Honda 4 Strokes. During our trip in the bay yesterday I got plenty of water on the back (around 160 litres) . I specify that there were no big waves. Just that when starting my boat goes bit straight for a few seconds before accelerating so that she is going finally horizontal . it was stressful for me to remove out the water and my boat was very straight to the conduct . When I was back home after inspection the hull is absolutely perfect but I saw where the water could surely enter. See photos, is that normal ? This seal must be perfectly waterproof? Is it possible to add a pump on this type of boat ? Yesterday the level of the water was very close to the batteries. Is it possible to buy a waterproof box for them ? Cheers have a good day Emma. ps hope you ll understand as french lady my tipping is no good thank you in advance
  7. G'day all, I need to do some repairs to my transom and replace wash well washers as they leak and to do this I need to remove ,my outboard motor. It is a Mercury Saltwater 125 and I'd image very heavy, so just wondering how I'd go about taking it off and storing it on the same thing that can lift it while I make the repair. Is there something I can build or hire to do such a job? Thanks Geoff
  8. Hey, Looking at options for a transom saver / outboard support bracket. My motor is a 150hp 4 stroke yammy with the 3 ram tilt. My other boat uses one of the brackets that connects to the trailer and has a v shape that the motor sits in to take some of the weight and keep the motor still when travelling. I recently seen one of those plastic transom saver blocks that sits on one of the ram rods. Are these effective? Can't seem to see how it would alleviate any weight from the transom - perhaps it's not meant to and is meant to only reduce movement? Are there any alternatives or DIY solutions? Tried a trailer roller but it might be too soft as the outboard just bends it when any pressure is applied. Also, just a more general question about powered trims as I'm more used to my old manually trimmed outboard, will the trim stop automatically when it senses pressure / an obstacle (like a transom saver) or will it just keep trying to trim and break something? Cheers Ryan
  9. I have a 2 stroke Yamaha 30hp CV longshaft that has some issues at the moment. It will start okay first go but will only run on high revs and won't idle good. It runs on high revs for a bit but will eventually shut off. Once it shuts off it won't start again. Can I get any recommendations on any issues it could be? I have changed the spark plugs and about to clean out the carby. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated
  10. Hi guys I just bought a 2017 Barcrusher XS535 with a Suzuki 100A outboard. I took it out on the weekend and was a bit disappointed with the fuel consumption. Running about 4200rpm on calm seas the best I was getting was 2km/L. But the funny thing is we copped it on the way home, over a metre of choppy as, wind vs current and that didn't really change the consumption, only going down to 1.9km/L. My old boat with a yamy got me 4km/L at full noise. My fishing spot is 100kms away from the ramp so at this rate I'm looking at using the full 100L just in travel. I'm thinking of getting a smaller prop as unloaded I'm maxing out at 5400 rpm. Any ideas?
  11. Over the last 9 months i have had a hydrofoil fitted to my outboard. I originally fitted it becuase when the boat was loaded up it would fall off the plane at about half throttle, and would occasionally bounce if loaded to much at the stern. The foil has fixed these problems but, when going diagonal to the weather, the tiller gets heavy and tries to pull out of your hand. Not unholdable heavy but enough to be a pain in the arse when your an hour or more away from the ramp. What experinces do you guys have with the hydrofoils? Does your tiller do the same thing? I want to hear it Cheers,
  12. G'day guys I've got a problem with my Suzuki outboard (2012 DT40W) that I was hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction on. I replaced most of the normal service items, gear oil, spark plugs, fuel filter, impeller etc about 1-2 months ago Since then I've taken it out a few times, and everything seemed to be running fine. That was until I was on my way back in from Mooloolaba and I ran one of the fuel tanks dry. I hooked up the other tank, and fired her up but started having issues at idle/low rpm when in gear (R or F doesn't seem to make a difference). Any sort of get-up-and-go throttle and it seems to thump along normally. Not sure how to describe it, but the motor periodically feels like it loses power, and then gives a squeal before running normally again. Sometimes it'll happen in rapid succession, others not so. I've put up a little vid showing it Since the first appearance of this issue I took it out with a fresh batch of fuel to see if it was related. Whilst I don't recall any issues when heading out from the ramp, it did start happening again after cruising around for a bit. Also concerned it may sound a little rougher at idle/low rpm - but not sure if that's just paranoia Motor seems to run fine when back at home flushing the passages out. Video: http://vid289.photobucket.com/albums/ll203/Gogatee/Produce_zpst5uvndro.mp4 Any ideas? PS: I don't normally have that red safety cord hanging over the transom
  13. Is there such a thing as a comprehensive course or a Cert that one can do to become certified in outboard/small engine maintenance? Something that I'd like to learn from scratch rather than try to work out by guesswork or elimination if I'd ever need to do so. Any particular recommended learning centre maybe?
  14. Morning fellow AFOers, Just a quick thought. Many a first time boatie has left the ramp without knowing the ins and outs of their motor and ran into trouble out on the water. Having just purchased a boat myself, is there any tips the boaters from AFO could give to newcomers? Eg - Where to buy workshop manuals What a basic toolkit should contain Maintenance Etc. Any tips or helpful advice would be appreciated and put to good use Thanks Felix

    cleaning

I just bought a 4 year old quintrex that has been in the water for the whole 4 years, I need to clean off the barnicles, I have tried using a presure cleaner (water blaster) with only half the problem fixed, there is some serious barnicles to remove. I am also still looking for an outboard 6 hp or less thats not too old and also a trailer to fit the tinny (3.7m) Any help would be appreciatted. Please does anybody have any ideas on how to remove the rest of the barnicles??
  16. Hello Peeps! I am continuing to research boats and asking advice here and there. I've narrowed my search down to; Quintrex Lazeabout '88-'92 4.5m. 560kg on trailer Seafarer V-Sea 474 4.74m. 700kg on trailer Or if the money starts flowing out me arse; Quintrex Freedom Sport 490 4.9m. 900kg on trailer.(500 Freedom sport) Here's the question; How long are these rigs on the trailer. Tow eye to furthest point at the back. (I would probably need to drop the outboard down to gain a few less inches) And what about overall height on the trailer with bimini folded down obviously. Would a Freedom Sport 500 5.07m be any longer than the 490 when on the trailer? This is all a fair way off yet, but I need to know what will fit in me garage!! TIA! I aasume I can drag these around behind me Falcon (one at a time of course )
