    Hi BWB,
you are right. I also like running sinker rigs but sometimes a fixed sinker is the only option (eg star sinkers to anchor a rig in the surf).
I guess for me it is a choice of getting a live bait further out where I want it and hopefully where the fish are, versus putting it closer where I don't think they are. Also I am banking on predators liking live mullet so much they will nail it and wont fool about with it.

    Hi DB,
I've heard of plans being "written on the back of an envelope", but never imagined I ever do one! I must get around to getting more photocopying paper. 🙂
This rig has worked well for me on quiet beaches and estuaries near me and haven't tested it yet in rough surf and I imagine that an incoming tide or strong wave action may push the bait to shore up along the main line. If I find that happens I may have to resort to a second fixed swivel above the sliding trace. Its probably not a good rig to use if there are lots of gulls around as I think they may like the live bait sitting on top when it has been cast.

Wow, are they really worth so much? I know they had a rep as good rods back in the day which is why I bought one about 15 years ago at a garage sale for $5. I think I was going to explore the dark art of luderick fishing but never got around to it. I think I have only used it a couple of times. Ebay here I come!

My wife & I were staying at Gerringong Beach 25 years ago I had a 6 foot solid glass bream rod and 6 lb mono. I looked 100m up the beach and started running when I saw birds diving into the water really close to shore. I quickly tied on the only lure I had (an old Wonder Wobbler with rusty hooks), and spent the most memorable time with the biggest (and first) Australian Salmon I've ever caught. The acrobatics were amazing and no wonder they are called the 'poor man's gamefish'. Each of them took over 10 mins to land. I didn't know that they weren't great to eat otherwise I would have let them all go. I kept 2 and remember that their heads were touching the sand as I walked proudly back. I was holding them by the caudal peduncle. I am over 6' so they were good fish. I didn't weigh or measure them and was impressed by their cross section- so round, like a torpedo and that's just how they behaved.

    Hi Hamish,
I started using poddy mullet early this year and have never looked back. If something hits a poddy its probably a good fish and doesn't muck about. I usually bring home a keeper or two when I fish now.  I am in the Sydney region so this is a good result given the fishing pressure.
