  1. I'll definitely check Aaron out Andrew_P, be nice to have extra strings to my bow. I sometimes use Exclusive Tackle as well, I get wholesale with them, but unfortunately they are low on stocks too often, you might need 5 or more sizes on guides and they'll be missing some, so then you need to see if you can get what you want in another style of guide - can make life difficult. I am finding UBuild a bit easier to work with (they're on the Gold Coast too), plus they really try to work with you. I'm currently trying to make a Sabiki rod, but it is proving very difficult to get some of the parts, one was the tip. I was talking to Graham (UBuild) the other day about it and he designed and made me one on his 3D printer, and posted it up, all free of charge. I finished that broken rod repair too, made a compound Spigot Ferrule to fix it (needs to be compound to avoid leaving a weak spot at the break site - or creating two lesser ones at either end of the spigot), but now I'm out of my small broken rod bits (still have medium and large), but fortunately am expecting to get some more in this afternoon.
  2. sometimes I can see me if I stand on the shed roof too .... problem is the chooks crowd me out !!!
  3. Main suppliers were MudHole and Get Bit, but the freight prices skyrocketed and started killing me, I now mainly use UBuild, I've used a few blanks and they are on the mark, and their guides have been very good, no ring pops and they use 304 so they last well, I don't like 316 - it gets brittle too easily
  4. located in Bowen, qld 4805, my main supplier is UBuild
  5. Yep, good advice Andrew_P, slow tapers are hard work when fighting a decent fish Junky, basically the fish has all the leverage advantage, I do like them when I'm fishing light tackle (1 & 2kg string), because they are more forgiving. For taking on bigger fish on heavier line I prefer Fast Taper Jig sticks (under load, the bottom section stays fairly straight, with most of the bend in the top third and relatively pronounced). There are quite a few available in the market (my main supplier has quite a number in both FT & MT and weight ranges), and like Andrew said, good idea to pop your reel on a few and try to get the feel of what you like. I've taken a couple of quick pics, hopefully they show the difference well enough
  6. Hah, found it ... this was one of the photos they used in the Lord Howe Island fishing advert. But not the huge Dolphin Fish that the guy in the red T Shirt caught .... for that pic you have to see the advert.
  7. And finally, I hope this will become a favorite. Based on a 15 - 24 kg two piece popping stick, sporting my Shimano Sargossa, running 30lb Berkley Trilene line. I'm currently rebuilding this one and will show before and after pics as it progresses.
  8. For the bigger stuff and trolling I use this outfit. Based on an Ironglass GH3, I originally built it in 1979 or 80, recently refurbished. it sports another Shimano Charter Boat Special, this one running 20lb Damyl line.
  9. When I'm using my threadline, this is my favorite. A Snyderglas again, a FT67 with my Shimano Thunnus 8000, spooled with 20lb Berkley Trilene
  10. When we get out to the reef, and end up catching bigger fish, this is Margies outfit. It's based on a Jarvis Walker JS980 blank (I know a lot don't the the JW blanks, but the JS980 has great low down grunt and a light enough tip). It has been built as a Short Stroker, fitted with a Shimano Charter Boat Special running 20lb, 8 strand rainbow braid.
  11. This is Margies absolute favorite outfit. We bought the Shimano Thunnus 4000, then found a rod that balanced right and that suited it, plus that Margie liked!
  12. That same trip Inspired me to build this rod, specifically to target Dolphin Fish, (you can see pics from that trip and the fish that inspired me in the Lord Howe Island Advert if you have a copy of Australian Anglers Fishing World that ran in the last quarter of 1983). It's based on a Snyderglas FT60 fitted to a Fuji Butt, with an Ambassadeur 5000 Thumb Bar release, loaded with Platypus Pretest 6kg line.
  13. Finally back .... I will start my list of favorites with my old Snyderglas M1 with my ABU Cardinal 52, which I have given a spruce up on the guides, as we are giving it to our grandson, Cooper. One of my most memorable catches was off Balls Pyramid when fishing from Lord Howe Island in 1983, where I caught two x 4kg Kingfish on my M1 using Platypus 1kg Pretest. I have respooled with 6lb line for Cooper.
  14. Thank you for sharing @Andrew_P. Unfortunately we are currently having a power outage, expected to finish at around 3 this afternoon. Kind of difficult to set up for photos in the dark, internet is also down, so once power is back on I will photo and post my favourites, both old and relatively new, plus my wife Margies favourites.
  15. Nice feed, well done I've been repairing a broken rod
  16. Looks like a great Idea .... must try it!
  17. Yah, argue with his wife Bretto77 .... no way Jose
  18. Haha, didn't think it was Bretto77, my lil brother really is a practicing barrister, and his wife really does own a Greek Deli (in the QV Markets in Melbourne, and she really does make a S***Load more money than he does .... and by the way .... he does talk like that ...... BUT ......... he is useless at building Fishing Rods
  19. HaHa, I'll have to send that to my younger brother ... he is a Barrister in Melbourne .... his wife makes more money than him .... she owns a Greek Deli
  20. All good, I forgot to mention, there's a link in the advert to a review of the top 5 baitrunner style reels.
  21. I'm selling a Yoshikawa Baitfeeder 6000 threadline reel spooled but never used, it's like a Shimano Baitrunner and should easily handle what you're after, if you want a cheaper option Link is : Yoshikawa Fishing Reel Baitfeeder 6000 spooled but never used like Baitrunner | eBay It's spooled with 20lb Mono (can't remember the brand - think it was Penn) I originally got it as I had two Shimano 4500 Baitrunners and wanted a heavier spare for when my wife and I were both fishing. I never used it as not long I bought it I decided to really up the ante and bought a Shimano Thunnus 8000 for me and a Shimano Thunnus 6000 for my wife. It's listed as $75 or best offer plus postage, if you're interested, my rock bottom price is $65 - just let me know it's you from AustralianFishingForum so I don't try to push the price up with a counter offer.
  22. It's not how much, as much as How you practice - J'Boss made me do so much on the footy oval, so I could pace and measure - know how I was doing- don't know if that works for everyone, but it did for me AND if you're keen, you will --- if you need to! And where we were fishing, we needed that distance, had to reach the gravel beds, that makes a difference too I guess
  23. AUS-BNE-FISHO It's actually not as hard as it sounds, good technique and LOTS of hours on the footy oval is everything. AND I know that first rig to the mm. Back then, in the early 80's, I was using a SnyderGlas FT120 4W (still have it) that J'Boss helped me build, with an Ambassadeur 7000C (Silver) using 17lb Shakespeare mono and a 4oz bomb sinker. J'Boss wouldn't let me add Pillies to the rig until I could do it consistently. Our snapper spot had the gravel bed running from 120m off the end of the end of the Mornington pier, so you had to do that to get there .... spent many nights sleeping in our Igloo tents on the end of that pier! J'Boss could push 6oz bombs out 165 metres on his FT144 7W every time - (read jealous here) - I could never come close - 6oz is HARD to control, way past me. His rig on the Pier was his the FT144 7W with his 9000C
  24. absolutely, Jeremy (the guy who taught me) wouldn't let me cast a bait until I could consistently pass 120 metres (measured on a footy oval, dipping the spool in a bucket of water)
