    Hey James.

There are plenty of places where oysters grow but I have not seen many on King island.

In Manly the areas around Rose Bay have good areas of oysters that are pretty easy to access at low tide.

The rock wall on Wynnum Creek has a load but a bit tricky to climb down to.

There are heaps around Dunwich on Stradbroke island.

I saw some near Victoria point but I don't know that area very well so don't want to recommend sorry but if you are from near there I am sure you could find some.

Just a note.  You may be aware of this but there are lots of laws around taking shellfish in Moreton Bay. Most shellfish are no-take but Oysters are ok but... you are not aloud to take oysters away from where you shuck them. You must consume them as you shuck em.

The only other mollusc you can take are pipis but numbers are limited.

In saying that I hope you find a stack and I hope you enjoy your feed.

Thanks Drop Bear you're a legend. I reckon I'll check out the Manly area as that is close by to me, and go from there. I did do a bit of research into the rules and I am aware of the eat it where to find it legislation, thanks for the heads up though!

First of all what are you targeting with 200lb line second of all I wouldn’t recommend the uni knot for leaders over 80lb because it does damage the line no matter how well you tie the knot . I recommend you try using the palomar knot for swivels and hooks at LB rating it works great for those heavier lines and also the AG chain knot is good for lures with that LB rating  hope that helps

It’s a leader that follows to a wire trace for large bull sharks. Thanks for the advice, I’ll check out those knots👍🏻

  3. Hi all,

I’ve got 200lb mono that I’m tying to a swivel using a uni knot. The issue is that it seems like no matter how many times I try and do it, even with a ton of lubrication (saliva), when I go to tighten the knot, as the knot slides down to the swivel, the small part of the line that the knot passes over becomes rough and looks slightly abraded. I’m able to seal the knot fine, it’s just that the end of the line feels rough, compared to the rest that’s smooth.

Will this effect the strength of the line at all?

    cheers👍🏻

Overheads carry more line and are better for big fish especially if they are fast.

The bail arm on the spinning reels mean that the line has to turn 90o. This puts loads of pressure on the line compared to the overheads that run the line straight at the guides.

The other thing I like about over heads is you can more easily thumb the spool or thumb the line onto the grip if you want a bit more drag than you have set.

But like others have said if you are only chasing small sharks spinning gear will do.

Thanks for that explanation mate. Definitely seems the overhead is the go for the larger specimens

Overall overheads reels have a better and stronger gearing system then spinning reels but It depends what you want to. Because spin reels are still definitely strong enough it’s up to you on this one for what you prefer personally i would go with 10000 size spin reel for big sharks but that’s me

Thanks for the help mate, I think I’ll go for the overhead

  6. Planning on getting a relatively cheap setup for 1.5-3m bull sharks. Never owning an overhead setup (other than bait caster), I enjoy the experience of using a spin reel, but I think I might be in over my head.

Between the TLD25 and the Penn 950, would the TLD the smarter option? I was thinking for line, 80lb braid main line to 150lb mono to a wire trace.

Was snapped off this morning with my 5000 reel with 30lb braid to 60lb wire trace. Fought for 40 minutes and was in no control at any point. Time to step it up. Thanks for the help!

  7. Alrighty, so I ended up going last night. Launched the tinny at the small boat ramp at 5:30pm and tried to cast for prawns. Sadly the abundance of prawns that was out a few nights ago just weren’t there so I ended up with a nice bucket of poddy mullet.

I started off fishing about 30m to the right of the boat ramp (Just across, past the rowing pontoon) and got some great smashes of the baits, but no hook ups. After an hour and a half I was keen to try the creek mouth and fish the drop offs. Luck was not on my side last night, and my battery that runs the sounder and lights must have dropped a cell, cos as soon as the engine was turned off, all electrical power was gone 😫. Because of this I could not determine where the drops exactly were, and the lack of light made things a little dangerous so after half an hour I pulled back up the creek to where the Mercedes dealership is, away from traffic. Once again got a few good bites, but to no avail.

So to sum up, nothing😔. Kind of regret moving from the first place as it would have only been a matter of time before a hook up. I think without a doubt, if I had managed to get some live prawns, there would have been some more action. Anyway, I’ll try and make it out there in the up coming weeks, and if there is anything worth reporting, I’ll let you know. Thanks for all the help👍🏻

There’s some deeper water right out side the mouth of the creek In front of Newstead house. Plenty of Jew thready and snapper have been caught  of the pontoon right at the mouth. I’d try anchoring right at the mouth or just to the left or right of it. Use your sounder to find the ledge or hole see if there is some bait there and anchor up current of this and send baits down to wards these areas. If tide is running in try sitting out side and position some baits to sit just inside the mouth to tempt any fish enterIng the creek

Awesome, thanks for the help Jon!

    Hey JMW21

Seems like the prawns are on. A cast net will be very handy, and as well as for jew and threadies, prawns are also gun bait for flatties, bream, cod, perch, and even mangrove jacks!

As for breaky creek, I've never fished there... But read heaps about it. Here are some old threads which will hopefully give you a hand -

Alright, that is all I have time for now, but if you type in 'breakfast' into the search bar at the top right corner of the forum page you will get pages of these pages! 🙂 For jew, I think around the mouth is better, and same with salmon. I can only suggest getting some good livies, such as prawns and mullet, tieing it on 30lb leader, and fishing deep holes/drop offs.

    Cheers Hamish 🙂

Wow thanks mate, appreciate the time you put into that. I’ll check them out!!

  10. Hi all, I hit breakfast creek the other night at the small boat ramp. Every time I cast my lure heaps of prawns were jumping, I was a bit bummed that I didn’t bring my caster net.

I was thinking of bringing my tinny down this Friday night and Catching some prawns to do some thready and Jew fishing. I was just wondering if anyone would have some recommendations where along breakfast creek is best to catch them? Are there any specific drop offs, or areas you’d recommend?

    Hi JMW21

Welcome to the forum. Great to have you on here 🙂

I haven't been to the mouth when it's rough, but I'd take ellicat's advice - go to somewhere like West End if the wind is up. There won't be many big whitecaps, and they'll only form if there's really strong winds and the tide is going against the wind.

Good luck for a threadfin/jewie. Tell us how you go 🙂

    Cheers Hamish

Thanks for the welcome and advice mate!

Mate I would advise against going to the river in that wind. It really can blow up at times and is very dangerous. There are lots of options at Jacobs Well in a wind or you can try Tingalpa Creek, Pumistone Passage or anywhere down the coast. Your 385 is a great boat and you can have a great time at the port but watch for strong wind.

Thanks for the advice mate, I reckon I’ll checkout Jacobs Well👍🏻

  13. Hi all, first time poster here. Purchased a 385 qunitrex explorer with a 15hp Mercury last week and have been keen to take it out on my day off on Saturday. I’ve been planning to launch at Pinkenba at midday and fish the river mouth area for Jew/threddie but just looking at the forecast it’s saying that the winds will be over 20 knots there. Is there any point going in that kind of weather? Alternatively are there any other shelter spots nearby worth trying out just to get the boat on the water and wetting a line for a few hours?

    cheers!
