Good work, glad you got one. It's a great feeling to get your first thready no matter the size.
Thanks Hamish for your great tips.
Thanks everyone too!

I thought they are finally coming, schooling up the Brisbane River in large numbers, scorching river bottom for prawns and herring. So I waited for them every time the tide changes at my local pontoon. After about thirty offering of big prawns and herrings, I finally saw the glory - a golden baby thready of about 50cms. Not much fight at all on my boat rod coupled with a 4000 reel. But the beauty just catch your eyes immediately. Took the photos and send it back.
They are really beautiful for eyes but unfortunately my phone can't catch it at night.
Enjoy!

Great report and guess you are happy about the jew fish caught.
Just have a question about your sedona 6000. Do you think it is an overkill for jew and thread in rivers?
Thinking about getting a 6000 or 8000 from bcf as they are on sale at the moment.
Thanks!

Thanks Hamish for such a great report.
Have you got any insight on the best time for fishing for thready in Brisbane River considering your extensive experiences? Have you done any statistics research on your report? Cheers

To add to this, here in SEQ when I go chasing winter whiting I have a paternoster of these jigs down. These jigs are neutrally bouyant and are designed for this rigging. Normal prawn shape lures are not as they sink.
Often catch as many as many squid as winter whiting with two guys fishing a rod each for the whiting and sharing 1 rod with the squid jigs.
Far more effective than the prawn style jigs when drifting about for whiting.
Is this paternoster setup more suitable for fishing on boat? Do it work effectively on land based as well? Cheers!

Thanks a lot for a great write up!

Sorry to highjack the topic, Just wondering if crab is used as bait, would you cut it or keep it alive, generally speaking?
Keen on catching some crab now.

I didn't go to the do.
Having said that I get better catches from a drawstring cast net than any top pocket net....top pockets only snare what actually make it into the top pocket, A drawstring net snares everything. Far fewer casts for the same amount of catch.
I have 4 nets, 1 x 9' drawstring, 1 x 12' top pocket, 1 x 10' top and bottom net, and 1 x 8' bottom pocket. The drawstring is easier to cast and catched far more than the rest of the nets even though it is smaller than two of the nets.....it is sometimes more than double any of the other nets. Plus fish don't tangle near as much in the drawstring nets.
I quite like drawstring too. The only drawback is it get snagged more often. However you don't have to cast as many as other net to collect baits.

The small black juvenile soldier crabs are gun baits for whiting in the shallows.
The big blue ones make great berley to bring the whiting close together.
That's quite true. I found the juvenile one under rocks and get bites very quickly. However you need very small hooks.

While bait fish was no where to find, I saw this little blue creature waving to me. Hard to say no so I grab a handful and sent them out. They got picked quickly but did not catch anything. I wonder if they are good bait?

Arrived just after Sunrise. Hoping to beat the School Holiday rush.
Tailor first up. Released.
Ended up with one nice Snapper ( Puppy will be happy )
Went quite for a while. Changed to lures & landed two bonito.
About to leave & the reel went off the planet.
On the other end after a fight was a large blue groper, he wasn't happy. Released to fight another day.
Bait was fresh squid & lures.
Cheers.
Thanks rebel, did you fish on a boat?

Hi Mzaakir, there are lots of beach in Redcliffe and manly that produce fish. It is hard to keep them secret. A website that is helpful in finding the best spot is here:

You look for deep holes /water channel.
Good luck!

I know you have already bought the board but I found this with a quick google search and thought it would be worth posting: https://boteboard.com.au/blogs/journal/the-best-fishing-paddle-board
Thanks for the information. The website tells me there is unlimited possibilities in sup fishing if I want to invest money and time to refine the art!
I like it they put an outboard motor on a sup!!
the only thing to complain about is the weight.they seem heavy (min 15kg).

Has anyone tried this JW carbon budget rod for soft plastics? I had the 3-6kg version and quite like it, but I don't have this.

Did you catch anything?
Show us some pics.
This morning was very quiet at scott point, don't know why. But i was using dead bait which was not touched. I was fishing from 5am till 7am on water and didn't feel much bite.
I will post a photo next time i get out.

After taking the sup out specifically for fishing at redcliffe this morning, I am so Glad to report back you definitely can use sup for fishing.
I was in the water for 2 hours with breezy wind. The sup got pushed and moved by wave, but not too much. It is pretty stable as i was sitting on it instead of standing. I have no problems doing things what i usually do in a kayak. But indeed you can't carry as many gears as in kayak.
It is a very relaxed session as i can lie down or stand up if i felt tired or bored. I also used kayak paddle and it feels much like a kayak.
The best thing is it is so easy to transport and i am very happy now.

Hi all, been a while.
me and a mate decided to head out fishing on Sunday and try and get some prawns. He called out last second and I already had the boat ready, so headed into the bay on my tinny. Saw some bluefin jumping right next to the boat but couldn’t get any, hooked up on tuna 3 times but lost them each time. Made it to Moreton and got to test the limits of my tinnyIMG_1428.MOV 17.11 MB · 6 downloads

I had a great plan to take my heavy rod and a couple of Jackall Doozer lures out chasing a big cod.
Unfortunately there were no cod to be seen, I couldn't cast quite as far as I liked and the wind was pulling my line hard and my lure wasn't going where I wanted it too.
So I switched to my light 3kg outfit and started launching some McGrath vibes way out, and I suddenly hit into a good run of yellow belly.
I managed to land a 4.2kg,4kg,2.8kg and 1.8kg yella's before I decided enough was enough and headed home.
Thrilling fight on light gear!!
did someone pull the plug out?
