    Thanks All.
Someone with marine biology quals got back to me and said Silver Toadfish. Images seem to match. It grows to 1.1m so ours was but a baby...

Hi All, sorry I have been busy and not participating much since joining up but 4 kids and about 3 different jobs will do that....
We did manage to get on Moreton bay today. My young 8 year old got 11 fish (I got a big fat donut...) and although nothing made it home to table he had ball so that is main thing.
I'll try attach photo of this weird toadfish like thing. His biggest fish ever. 55cm.
Does anyone know what that might be??
    Any thoughts much appreciated.
    Cheers!

    Thanks for the welcome Bear.
My boys are usually keen for a fishing session and the river is the closest spot, so we'll be giving it a go over the holidays.

Nice work Hamish, they are impressive fish.  Yes, I think toxins get accumulated as the fish ages, and as you go up the food chain to the top predators.
An old fisho I knew up at Gladstone was good at catching Spanish mackerel.  He had a saying about eating only the "smaller" reef fish to avoid ciguatera poisoning... "If its shorter than your arm, it'll do you no harm".

Thanks.  Honestly can't recall how I stumbled across this forum.
Probably googling for fishing tips for whatever species was on my mind that day and one link lead to another!

    Hi All,
I've been lurking here a little while and have been meaning to do the Intro thing.  Great amount of info on this site for fishing newbies like me.  Thanks to everyone who takes the time to share knowledge.
We are a Brisbane family and I've done a bit of beach fishing over the years from N NSW to Fraser and caught the usual surf species but not many tailor unfortunately.  Almost always bait fishing but starting now to get into lures.
I have 4 kids now and work long hours so time is very limited but we're recently bought a second hand Quintrex 610 bowrider so have had that out a few times in Moreton bay (Sundays b/c kids have sport etc on every Sat).  We also use the boat for a bit of skiing/tubing on the Brissie river so that is fun.   One of my mates has been helping us get started using soft plastics so that has been interesting if not very productive!  Great to learn something new and there certainly is a lot to learn about the science and art of fishing!
    Cheers everyone.
