Well the night started off terribly. Dinner was late and i was worried i was going to miss the high.  Luckily for me i have a brilliant missus who fixed everything for us to leave just when i wanted to. Car was packed energy was high and off we went.  Drive round the corner and suddenly the bubble burst and i felt as though my first girlfriend had just dumped me again. The jetty at victoria point was full of people fishing. Not wanting to give up but knowing i have little fuel till pay day we started heading home. As we pull into the driveway.....da dada daaaaaa missus to the rescue again. She says put the fishing gear into my car i have fuel. Spirits lifted once more and off we went to wellington point. Got there at 9.00.....a little late but it had just gone high tide and i was getting pumped. A quick look up the jetty showed quite a few people but there was still plenty of space for us to wet a line aswell. Eagerly we jumped out the car and felt the wind. It was comming on quite strong and i knew the jetty was going to be even worse. But we were there dammit and i wasnt going to let it stop me from my mission. So we jumped back in the car and went to the king island side of the point. Quickly unpacked the car and walked to our chosen spot. Baited my rod with some worms and cast into the great dark abyss. Eagerly wanting to try out my new cast net i ripped it out if its bucket and began wildly throwing into the water.....wow i cant begin to describe how bad i was throwing it. I may aswell have just thrown a rock into the water. Going from a 6' to a 10' net sure means tweaking your throwing style a bit. But after 10 or so throws i was making some decent throws and ended up landing a few of thesepretty happy start. Pulled in my rod, removed the worm and rebaited with one of these little suckers. Re cast and no more than 20 seconds after i had put my rod down did the line start screaming. I ran like hussien bolt grabed my rod and bang set the hook. The fight was on. It was my light 4lb gear on a 1-3kg rod vs whatever had dared to take the bait. Keeping the drag just right to bring him in with a few little runs here and there i finally glimpsed the subltle silver gleam in the pale light. My adrenilin was pumping now. I havent been so excited over pulling in a fish in a long time but here i was dripping with anticipation. Finally the fish was at the wall and i pulled it up and over onto the floor quickly so it wouldnt have a chance to flick free. It was a beauty. Pan sized bream. Havent seen one this big in years.

Just hit 33cm. For a bream i was stoked. Straight into the esky and he will be starring in 2morrow nights dinner. After such a rough start to the night i was glad to see a good outcome. Not only did i spare the doughnut but i was taking home a feed aswell. Well the tide was still high and so were my spirits again. Re bait and woosh vast back into the abyss. Rod down go to cast net and bzzzzzzz rod is off again......wow i think i found the magic bait at wello. Grab my rod again and bang hook is good. Reeling in.....then i felt it......u know that feeling where its like the fish just swam into a rock but the hook kept going.....well thats what it felt like to me cause suddenly there was nothing on the other end. Finished reeling it back in, re bait and re cast. I actually got a few throws of my cast net in before the line started going off again. Quickly i dropped my net as i was about to throw it. Grabbed the rod and set the hook again. I had the drag set too loose and whatever was on the end just ran. Quickly tightened the drag and started to get some line back. It was about 10.00 by now and the tide was dropping rather quickly as it does in that area. It was probably only 1 foot deep just below me but i was determined to land this one. It was still a good fight not too dissimilar from my first good fight of the night. But finally i landed my second pan sized bream of the night
    this one a good 29cm.
but with the tide running out it was time to pack it up and head home. Was a good trip in the end and i have a good feed for tomorrow. Now to plan my next trip out.
    Tight lines folks

Intresting question. Im not entirely sure on the answer but i do know that generally you dont feed the plastics to the fish. They work like a lure and youbget it back when you reel in the fish. I guess they could be swallowed from time to time though. Be intrestimg to do some research as i hate the waterways being more and more pullouted

    Hi kmcrosby78
Thanks for that, I'm sure you'll get one soon. I think they are biting now, as squeak6969 got one recently too. Just keep trying, it took me a year and four days to get this one since my last. 🙂
    Cheers Hamish

I also agree with the above. Ive used wire before but dound that unless your targeting big tiger sharks it scares alot of fish away. I usually go over kill with sharks and use 80lb mono. But you would prob get away with 30lb and gang hooks. Gang hooks are great imo for the bigger fish

Hook type will have an impact on your chances of landing whatever it is (I agree with @Old Scaley that a small shark or school mackerel are the two most likely options). What sort of hook were you using? I'd go to 30lb leader (you could still go heavier but the heavier you go, the less likely to land other desirable fish like snapper, etc) and try using a circle hook (around 3/0 size) as you can land them if you hook them in the corner of the mouth (just don't give it ANY slack line once hooked, and perhaps set your drag a little firmer.
As Hamish said, you could also try ganged hooks - if you go this way, with a live herring bait, I'd just use two hooks, pinning one hook lightly through the back of the hook. I'd only use wire if these options fail as it will work for sharks, but less likely to attract much else (desirable anyway).
Good luck, it's always fun pondering what the one that got away was and how to catch it next time, part of the fun of fishing 🙂.

    Hiya all
Today we decided we would sneak out for a quick morning session chasing Brisbane River threadies, so we did. It was an exploratory mission, and now I know for next time when to come back. While it wasn't successful, I got to meet someone who I watched on YouTube (google Team Fat Flathead)🙂
We arrived at about 7:00AM, so a relatively lousy start. When we got there, the tide was low and it was a five meter muddy walk to the water. Problem - I had to catch some livies. I walked out and began throwing my net, crappily, due to the factors of no balanced and mud weighing it down. I came up with a couple mullet and prawns though, so it wasn't a waste. These were then pinned onto two rods and thrown out. Another person was fishing there, so I took the other side of the park.
After about an hour, the other guy headed off, but before we had a chat. He had caught many threadies and a 1.25m model at that location. There was only one problem, it was still low tide. Just then suddenly, my rod went off. The fish dropped it, it was small, so I was somewhat disappointed. This was at about 8:30AM, and thankfully the tide had risen enough for me to throw off the bank. Between my Dad and I we caught some more mullet. Here is the only picture of the day -

    Some awkward cast net throwing
After this, we re-casted the lines and took turns throwing the net. Apart from a few families (we kept our distance) there was nothing. We we starting to bake, LOL, and then I got the call we needed to come home due to my mother having 'technology problems' 😉. I washed the mud off my legs, then we drove home. I had to change clothes due to being so muddy as well. I have finished giving my gear a good wiping and lubing which was much needed due to the circumstances of this trip.
Here are the stats of the trip  -
    Tide- 0.3m Low, 7:30AM, 1:10PM high, 2.0m. I fished the rising tide.
Moon Phase- It is the super moon, so lots of tidal run
    Rainfall recently- Approx. 2.2mm
    Time fished- 7:00AM-10:00AM
Tackle used- I went heavy this time as I didn't know what the structure was, next time I will be going lighter - 80lb trace, 30lb leader, size 6 ball sinker, size 1 star sinker, swivel, 6/o circle hook, 30lb mainline, 14lb mainline, size 2 ball sinker.
Fish caught- *Don't laugh at my donut 😉*
    Bait caught- Mullet and prawns
Bait used- Live and dead mullet and prawns
Overall Success- 30% - sussed out a new area
Alright, that's the end of this very short and boring report LOL. All the best with COVID-19 guys, I hope you enjoyed reading about my donut 😉. Sorry it was pretty boring, I hope to get some content that I can make an actual report on soon (well, just a good one).
    Cheers Hamish 🙂

I've always said that I could easily go and catch 100 bass at NPD, but I prefer the challenge of trying to catch one legal fish in Moreton Bay ......... 🙃

Completely lost my mojo. Fished the salt for first time in 3 years. Rick and I launched from Redland bay this morning armed with some fresh squid . Fished at snipe, iron stem, pots point and pelican banks Used half a tank of fuel, bruised bum from the chop. One 27cm bream some small snapper ( 2 to 4 inch)small parrot and small sweetlip for 4 hours effort. You can stick the rustwater up your kyber.

Hamish, I think one has the interpretation of the restrictions incorrect. One can still fish landbased, if one choses too, one can fish in/from ones boat. One can not just go cruising about in ones boat.
One can go fishing for food, one can not go fishing just for catch and release... so ensure you catch 2 fish 1 being a bream/flatty etc and take it home if you`re going with the intention to release fish. 😉😃

Wow had a friend pick me up this morning and take me to a place he know to go fishing.......thought we were going to colmslie but he had other plans.  Get to his spot and throw the cast nets....i finally worked out how to throw my new 10' with it opening all the time.  Anyway fishing for awhile with no luck about to pack up and change to colmsloe when my rod bends in half. I drop my net and run to my rod   strike and set the drag and im on. 10 mins fighting later and i get my self a river monster. My first threadfin salmon just shy of a meter.
to say im happy is an understatment.
    happy easter everyone
