School free day. End of their Holidays.
    Arrived around sunrise. Top morning.
One of the easiest places to go rock fishing.
First up a nice drummer ( Released ) The boys caught 2 tailor.
    I caught two nice snapper 45cm & 48cm.
The boys caught 2 flathead & another tailor. They were happy.
Enough for me for my return to the rocks.
I tried out my new rod. Storm Gomoku 13ft. Casts very well. I had a Penn SpinfisherV 6000 reel on it. Good combo.

    Hi all,
I was on a holiday down in Victoria for a week (went for one fish for trout but no luck) and got back last Thursday around midnight. Decided to have a rest on Friday but Saturday morning @Cavvy and I tried a spot on our kayak. We launched at about 5am and arrived at the spot by quarter past, just before the sun rose. We spent the next four hours flicking some shallow diving hardbodies around but unfortunately, we did not catch any threadfin. There was plenty of bait jumping but I guess the fish weren't hungry, so we will have to get them next time.
    Stats of Trip:

The next session was today with @Thorbjorn Hale at The Port, on Thorbjorn's tinny. We launched at around 9am from a very crowded POB boat ramp, and after we got away first thing on the agenda was catching some livies. It wasn't long before we had a fair few mullets gathered so we went out to the wharves and started fishing.
It was awesome weather, and it was quite flat for as far as I could see. On my first cast my live mullet remained untouched for a fair amount of time before line started screaming off of my reel. Thorbjorn picked up my rod while I wound in my soft vibe and the fish took a good run. I started the fight and the fish was taking some decent runs and had some good headshakes. It wasn't long before I had a nice 60cm or so snapper on the deck of the boat, which we were both happy with (and I was regretting not buying some ice for the esky). After a quick photo we released the snapper and got lines back out.

    Snap
Following this, we each caught a decent sized stingray, but after that the bite went very quiet, so we decided to go and chase some livies at the Poo Chute and try again. We were successful with the herring (despite my substandard cast netting), but back at the spot we couldn't lose a bait, apart from Thorbjorn catching a small shovelly. We moved again, and at this spot we each pulled in a catty, which wasn't a great sign. As we were moving though, we noticed a boat was hooked up to a decent fish. We waited until we saw it, and sure enough the gold of a thready emerged, so it was good to see someone was having some success on the soft vibes.
We chased a bit more live bait which was fun and had a quick rest before anchoring on the edge of the main channel around the Clara Rock area. Unfortunately for us, this didn't equate to any fish, and the only action was a few nibbles and plenty of waves from the Moreton Island boats. At about five, we decided to call it quits and we drove home. Overall, it was a great day with the weather staying flat for basically the entire day, thanks again for taking me out Thorbjorn!

I’ve been  wanting to make a custom spin  rod for  Tailor  fishing up at Fraser Island for a while now . About a week ago I got on Facebook and  purchased  an old  trashy looking 13 ft butterworth surf rod, (the number on the blank appears to be ss 51569 )for the princely sum of  $50 -hoping I  could do something with the blank.
First up , I stripped it all back and shorted the blank down  till it felt real good at 11 foot 8 inches. I wanted the rod to be powerful ,but as light as possible , so got on line and ordered a set of Alps  aluminium oxide High Rise  Guides , a Fuji reel seat , some shrink wrap grips,  and a butt cap from a local supplier . I had a bit of thread and epoxy in the garage which I used for the project . It took me two nights to bind it all up and epoxy it . My wife even made me up a little decal sticker  for it.
This morning the epoxy had all gone off rock solid  , so I put a Shimano  6000 Saragosa  with 20 lb braid on it and loaded it up to give it a test.Jezzz …  It feels like a weapon and cannt wait to fire out some 65 and 85 g Raiders later this year. I’ve used a lot of high modulus rods but I recon those old school surf rods are hard to beat when surf fishing , they cop a flogging out there on the beach and a lot still being used 20 to 30 years later . Super glad I gave this old girl of a rod a second lease of life.

I took a drive down to the Tweed river and collected some driftwood for the garden earlier this month. I found a well weathered piece of sleeper that I thought I could make into something interesting. With all this crap weather I  found some time and got out the electric soldering iron and etched a  Kraken into it to add a bit of character. Next piece I  find ,  might make a  Rum tasting paddle with a similar design.

Arrived about an hour before low tide. Cloudy & some rain. Had the place to myself, which is great.
Bit quite to start. First up a nice bream. My puppy will be happy, loves bream.
    Then a nice whiting
Five more whiting. That was enough, for the family weekend BBQ.
Bait was beach worms. Tried my new Okuma Ceymar 3000 reel. Very smooth.
Off to the Norah Head coffee shop for breakfast. Another top spot.

    Hi all
This report will be about the last few sessions fishing in the Brisbane River, most of which has been quite slow. With all the rain I have found the fishing to be pretty bad in the middle reaches of the river lately.
Two Sundays ago, I met a mate I hadn't seen in ages down at a local jetty to get him a bullshark. I arrived nice and early, but I struggled to catch any bait or get a bite. However, about 20 minutes before he arrived I deployed a stinky chunk of eel in hope a shark may be cruising around. Sure enough, two minutes after he arrived the rod was screaming. I set the hook, and it was a better sized shark than usual, so I passed him the rod. A few runs later we had a nice 1M bull shark on the jetty, the biggest I have caught at this spot.
We continued fishing for a few more hours but I struggled to catch any bait and we only got some large catfish. Oh well, at least we got that shark.
    Stats of Trip:
    Tide: 6:30AM, .2M, Low, 12:45PM, 2.6M, High
    Moon Phase: 10%
    Bait Caught/Used: Bony bream, eel
Fish Caught: Shark x 1, several catties.
Tackle Used: 15-30 pound braid, varying ball/star sinkers, 4/o and 6/o circle hooks, 80 pound mono trace, varying spinning rods and reels.
    Air Pressure: 1006
    Humidity: 66%
Overall Success Rate: 70% - got the shark
The next day, I was fishing with @Thorbjorn Hale at a spot we hadn't been to for a while. Shortly after arriving and not being able to catch any good bait I cooked us up some bacon and egg rolls, which were nice until it started raining and the bread became soggy. I had caught a couple of pike eels and a 1.3M shovel by the time Thorb had arrived though.
Eventually, I started getting a few herring in the net, and we each were getting plenty of bites. Between all the showers it was pretty cold though, and we landed several catfish, pike eels, as well as stingrays and shovelnose. By about 4:30PM, I headed off, a bit disappointed with the day.
    Stats of Trip:
    Tide: 6:30AM, .4M, Low, 1PM, 2.8M, High, 7:50PM, .5M, Low. - tide was absolutely ripping.
    Moon Phase: 19%
    Bait caught/Used: Live herring mainly
Fish Caught: Stingray, shovelnose, catfish, pike eel.
Tackle Used: Shimano Sedona 6000 on Abu Garcia Nexus, Shimano Baitrunner on Kmart Rod, Penn Spinfisher Liveliner on Ugly Stik. 50 pound leader, 4/o and 6/o circle hooks, 6 ounce sinkers.
    Air Pressure: 1005
    Humidity: 86%
    Overall Success Rate: 40%
The day after that I had some chores to do so stayed home, but then on Wednesday I was fishing with Thorbjorn again at his local spot. I arrived a bit before seven and deployed a chunk of pike eel while I tried to catch some livies. Soon enough, the shark rod was screaming, and Thorbs rocked up just as I was mid way through the fight. Unfortunately the shark was no monster but a solid 1.1M model all the same - a new PB bully for me. Thorbs helped me land it and we released it.
Later in the day I caught a nice size school of herring in my cast net, enough to keep us fishing for the day. This however didn't bring anything great, and I think we just caught several vermin fish. Soon enough, we were out of bait and I got home, ready to go for a fish the next day.
    Stats:
    Tide: 7:20AM, .5M, Low, 1:40Pm, 2.6M, High
    Moon Phase: 30%
    Air Pressure: 1003
    Humidity: 88%
Tackle Used: Shimano Sedona 6000 on a Abu Garcia Nexus, Penn Spinfisher Liveliner on Ugly Stik, Penn Spinfisher 8500 on Savage Gear Salt, 30 and 50 pound braid, 50 pound and 10 pound trace/leader, wire trace, size 4 star sinker or 6 ounce sinker.
    Bait Caught: Herring
Overall Success Rate: 60% - new PB bully
The next day I was back at the same spot with a mate from school. We arrived and shortly after setting up were onto plenty of herring, which we could use for both live and dead bait. It was the last of the run out tide first, so although optimal for sharking I said to my mate the bites would probably be slow for a while on the livie rods. Sure enough, we didn't get any bites until the tide switched, but once it started running in, we caught a nice mix of catfish, stingrays, and eels, and although not good in general, it was my mates first time fishing, so plenty of entertainment.
As we were about to head off, the big shark rod screamed. I set the drag and line kept peeling off. Eventually, after 60 or so meters were taken, the shark stopped, and this is when I realized the line was caught in something underwater, making it difficult to fight the fish. I was just about to hand the rod to my mate to have a go when the shark shot off again and then busted the line off after taking a fair few more meters. I would estimate it to be in excess of 1.5M, maybe 2M+. Hopefully I can catch it next time!
    Stats of Trip:
    Tide: 9:00AM, .8M, Low
    Moon Phase: 52%
    Bait Caught: Herring
    Fish Caught: Stingray, catfish, eel

    Air Pressure: 1000
    Humidity: 90%
Overall Success Rate: 60% - a few fish for my mate
On Friday, I was fishing on the bay, and then on Saturday, I think I had a rest. On Sunday, I tried a local spot that a mate had caught a thready at two days prior, so I also invited a mate from a previous session. This proved to be a waste of our day though, as I could only catch one bony bream, and we didn't end up catching a single fish. That was alright though, it was still a bit of a fun day.
    Stats:
    Tide: 6:45AM, 2.5M, High
    Moon Phase: 80%
    Air Pressure: 1003
    Humidity: 86%
    Fish Caught: -
Overall Success Rate: 30% - better than staying at home
Anyway, I slept for 15 hours that night, so didn't get around to fishing, and then I was back at school, but I did go out this morning in the river for a flick. My Dad and I launched the yak after the last ferry shot by, but to our disappointment Spot X was still a bit busy so we hit a fishy looking very terminal for no luck. It was still mid run out though, and the tide was pumping being a full moon, so it was tricky to fish here. We shot up to a different terminal, but the tide was ripping twice as hard here, making fishing near impossible. We had a look at one more terminal on the way back but with minimum lights and no surface activity we gave it a miss.
Fortunately, Spot X had cleared out by now, and first cast into the light pool my Zerek Pyra lure got smacked. A couple of casts later I hooked a nice tailor which fought well. We got a quick pic then released this one, but as the tide was still pumping we went to the ferry terminal where we started. We were now hearing some tailor splashes and I heard one distinct boof (like a bass one but louder), so we had a few casts here. I picked up another tailor here, but the lights around the terminal turned off for some reason so we went back to the other spot.
This brought no more fish, and although it would've been good to stay until tide change at four my Dad wanted to get home, so we were off the water by 3. Anyway, I guess I should name it Spot T for tailor, hopefully next time when we try a new area we will catch a thready!

Rick Ludd reacted to AUS-BNE-FISHO in yeppoon trip 7/01-12/01
    Hi all,
I headed up to Yeppoon a couple weeks ago to visit some family and go fishing. I flew up and arrived on Sunday arvo, so wasted no time and went for a quick session at the harbour. The first two casts of my net came up empty but on my third cast I got a few herring, so kept them live and moved spots. I dropped a couple livies down behind the boat and floated a small cube down as well.
First cast I was on a small mackerel, which I released (undersize). Then, I think I found the fishing very quiet, and was struggling to connect to anything. A small grunter gave me some more hope and after a few bait changes my big rod eventually screamed off. I set the hook and a fun fight around some pylons started, where I eventually landed a solid 50-55cm cod. I probably should have kept this but decided to let it go to catch next time.
The next day I got the bus to the Causeway to fish the run through tide. It was already busy when I got there but the first cast of my net I got a nice sized silver biddy. I floated this out into the run through unweighted, and although things were looking quiet plenty of trevally had already been caught so I was hopeful I would get one.
Sure enough, my bait got smashed and a fun fight with a 51cm GT started. I landed it successfully and gave it away to someone else fishing. After that, I didn't get any more bites and headed off when the tide stopped running through.
At low tide that day, I went out to Double Heads spinning, but only picked up a few grinners despite the calm conditions. Then, I went to the harbour again in the arvo, but the only fish getting around were a couple of flat salmon.
When I got home that night I rerigged my gear in preparation for fishing the next day. When I arrived at the Causeway a nice jack had already been caught, and I watched someone pull one in just as I casted out my first live biddy of the day. Things were a bit quiet for me for the first two casts, but with my bait still kicking I redeployed it and hooked up to a nice fish. After a few runs, I landed another nice 60cm GT, which I was pretty happy with. I gave it away to another fella who hadn't caught any fish that day, fished for a bit longer, and then headed home when it stopped running through. I put in 60 casts at Double Heads that arvo and I think I gave the harbour a miss, as I only caught more grinners and a wolf herring at Double Heads.
The next morning I walked five k's to the Causeway and arrived at 4:45AM, and to my surprise the mozzies were very bad. Luckily, another fisho who arrived shortly after gave me some bug spray. He caught a small jack on plastics, and then when the run through started I couldn't catch much bait. I think I ended up getting off the donut with a small cod to end the session but it was definitely a quiet day. I went to Double Heads for a third time and only got more grinners, so I decided to give it a miss for the rest of the trip. I did go to Ross Creek for a quick flick as well but no luck.
The next day I was back at the Causeway in the morning, hoping for a jack or trevally. Things were slow to start with (one small cod) but I did eventually hook up to another solid trev, which I pulled hooks on. Bugger. I kept fishing until the run through finished, very disappointed about the lost fish as it felt pretty big. That arvo, I had a flick down at Statue Bay at low tide with some shallow diving hardbodies and surface on sunset, but this brought no joy. I did find a big dead blue salmon in the rock wall which was unusual.
I got the bus to the Causeway for my final session on Friday, hopeful today would be the day I caught a jack or barra. Unfortunately, I struggled to catch any bait but was eventually given some livies so sent them out. To my surprise, as the run through increased, two nice size barra (one maybe 60cm and one maybe 1m) were caught by some people fishing the edge of the run through, so I will definitely give this a try next time. Someone also caught a 60cm or so model on lures. I finished up when the run through stopped with a big fat donut, so hopefully next time I catch a good fish. I flew home that night, feeling pretty sad I didn't catch one of those barra! 🤣

    Overcast & grey morning.
We didn't have our new recruit, so we headed for the rocks at sunrise.
    Calm water which was good.
Started with a bonito. These fish like a fight. Tested my new Penn 6000 conflict reel. Works well.
We ended up with 4 snapper 42 to 48cm. We let the bonito go. Caught 3 of them. Also caught  2 tailor ( released )
Bait was fresh squid & Metal lures. I had a new lure a Nomad Ridgeback 40g. Tailor seem to like them.

    Hi all
I was lucky enough to spend part of the 30th of December at the emergency room getting treated for some illness, but by the arvo of New Years Day I was well enough to head out for a bass fish with my Dad.
We started out at Mt Crosby, but with a high tide and lots of rain the water was unusually high making it difficult to access any of our usual spots. Regardless, my Dad had one hit on the surface cicada and I had one bass smash a hardbody at my feet but miss the hookup before we decided to move spots. Second spot was a bridge that we always drive over to get to Mt Crosby (Kholo Creek), anyway it was disgusting and we caught nothing there. Final spot we gave a crack was Colleges Crossing, but with some very fast flowing water it didn't look too fishy and sure enough we caught nothing. Oh well, nothing wrong with starting the year strong with a big fat donut.

The next day I went for a eel session at the local park, which was successful with one decent sized eel being landed.
Then on Wednesday, I caught up with @Thorbjorn Hale for a fish at his local spot, targeting the normal sharks and threadfin. We each sent some eel out on our big rods, with Thorbjorn slide baiting out a rather large, enticing chunk, and myself casting like normal, before we briefly tried to catch some livies. This was unsuccessful, so we went back to the shark rods waiting for a bait to go off.
Thorbs bait was played with a few times before he pinned a nice size pup, not the sized shark we were going for but it was good for someone to get off of the donut. We continued fishing, and as the tide rose a bit more Thorbs came across a nice size herring which he sent out and turned into a nice sized bully pup again. After this, the bite went pretty quiet, and I headed off a bit after midday to get home for work.

The next day I was pretty exhausted, so decided to sleep in and go mid morning down at my local park. I was targeting the last part of the runout, the best time to fish this spot in my opinion. I sent out a piece of eel on one rod, and then went to grab a couple of livies for the other, which didn't take long. Unfortunately, first bait was turned into a dirty catty, before the bite went quiet.
I nabbed another catty later in the morning and after having several crabs grab on then drop off on the eel piece some line finally started peeling off of the reel. The tide had just started ripping in so it was a bit of a battle when the little bully ran around all of the old jetty pylons, but eventually I got it up jettyside. I was a bit lazy with the dilly and consequently didn't land the shark in time, and it snipped me off as I was going to grab my dilly.
I headed home after this, and prepared the gear to go again the next day.

I arrived a little earlier the next day, and had a few casts of the net before I sent a bait out, which produced some catties, bony bream, and tilapia. Discarded the catties, killed the tilly, and kept the bonies for bait. These bonies, which didn't last longer than 10 minutes on the end of my line, were all munched on quite tentatively by sharks over the next couple of hours, but no threadies were cruising by.
First shark I managed to get a measure on for the comp, but due to a rather large hole that one of them or a stingray made in my dilly, I failed to get the other two onto the jetty before they snipped me off. To add a bit of insult to the lost sharks already, I then finally got one of the muddies up that kept eating my eel, and I got it all the way into my dilly, but it clambered straight out the hole and sunk away. It was around 17-20cm across.
Headed home after I got snipped off and couldn't catch any more bonies to prep the gear for the next session, which was Saturday morning having a flick with some lures.

So, my Dad and I woke up last night at 11:30PM and shot over to the launching spot of choice. We had the kayak ready to go a couple minutes before the last ferry of the night rolled through, so we waited until we thought it was clear but another one came by and gave the kayak a nice rinse off while we were in the middle of the river anyway.
We shot down at a good pace to the first ferry terminal of the night, which had minimal surface activity. We had timed it so we went down with the last of the run out and up with the first of the rising, so we paddled back to the next terminal which had no surface activity. Things weren't looking good, and after having a go with a vibe around a few moored boats for no love we needed to get out to stretch the legs. We pulled up at a jetty quickly before continuing on our way, having a quick cast at a nearby riverwalk before we reached another ferry terminal.
This terminal was quiet, but at a wharf up the river a bit there was significantly more illumination so my Dad and I tried there. After about 25 minutes for no love, we were thinking about calling it to get back to sleep when something decently large busted up. I flicked my subsurface lure past the lightpool and worked it back, and then smack! I was on. A few splashes later I had a nice 40cm or so tailor up on the side of the kayak. This was released, and hopes were increasing. Sure enough, a few casts later I was on to a similiar sized model again, which made plenty of splashes on the surface.
A while later, we were about to finish up, so I had a few last casts with my Megabass Oneten R into the lightpool I caught the first tailor. Things were looking promising, and then I was on. This was a bit better though, and it was peeling line on my baitcaster with tight drag, getting my hopes up for a threadfin. Somewhat disappointingly, a larger tailor surfaced after some more runs (nearly pulled the rod out of my hands at one point), which was released. We headed off after that to get some sleep, satisfied with our session - we were off the water by about 3:30AM and home in bed at 4.
    Stats of Trip:
    Tide: 11:10AM, ,5M, Low, 5:30AM, 1.8M, High.

Thanks for reading, hope you enjoyed. I'm heading up to Yeppoon for a few nights tomorrow so hopefully a mangrove jack or something big up there.
    Cheers Hamish.
