Brodie_S reacted to ellicat in baitcasterz for jacks
Hey Myles,
You have to realise this is a forum where you post your question and if a member has an answer they will respond when online. It's not a retail outlet chat box where you can expect a relatively prompt answer. On AFO, maybe noone has an answer.
Considering this, it would be best if you stopped spamming other members' threads with the same off-topic questions (which I have now removed).
Thanks.
PS It would also be good if you could give something back to the forum by posting a report and pictures of your mangrove jack catches. I'm sure we would all appreciate that.

Brodie_S reacted to Tuna are fish in Offshore Kayak rod suggestions (Telescopic?)
Personally i use a Shimano barra raider for mackerel and tuna, it is 2 piece (dont know the exact size) with a Shimano Sedona 4000 spooled with 30Ip Braid and Mono leader. i use it in my kayak in the estuary and lakes and it works really well. i would suggest going with something like that.

Cheers Hamish, highest line class I could find in retailers in aus was a 5kg Abu which seemed overpriced so ended up finding a few suppliers in China and have 3 good looking 'carbon' rods on the way in hopes at least 1 is not crap.

Brodie_S reacted to AUS-BNE-FISHO in Offshore Kayak rod suggestions (Telescopic?)
Hey @longhairedwahoo
I agree with Breaming with Bro. Most telescopic rods are low quality and often aren't sensitive, and the weight is unbalanced. In saying that, I have a $70 rod and reel combo (telescopic) that comes with me whenever I go hiking or camping, and it has held up well over 4 or 5 years.
Another option is a three piece (or even four piece) rod. I own a three piece which I use as well as my telescopic. While I prefer the telescopic for chucking lure (light lures though, not what you'd typically use offshore) I can still cast around 25 metres with the three piece, and it's a bit of a cheapy. I'd imagine if you looked around you'd be able to find a good quality one for a reasonable price.
Cheers Hamish

Cheers @Breaming with brofor the reply it was what I expected tbh. I have had only good experiences with the cheap ones on camping trips where space was tight for bream and flattys (They dont last long though but I don't expect them to). Shame there's not something on the high-end.

Brodie_S got a reaction from longhairedwahoo in Offshore Kayak rod suggestions (Telescopic?)
Unfortunately I’m not sure if decent/high quality telescopic rods exist. I’ve used small light ones for bream fishing and a heavy duty shimano one with beach fishing but that’s about it . Most of them have horrible feeling blanks and dodgy rod guides. My advice would be to look for a decent small 2pc rod maybe around 5,3-6 at full size

Hi guys,
Recently upgraded from a viking nemo 2 man to their profish 45 to trawl and bottom bash off pt Lookout in hopes of pelagics and large demersals. The profish unlike some other kayaks (stealths) doesn't have a big enough internal storage to store your typical 6ft boat rods while landing in the surf and so was wondering if you guys knew of any good compact options (collapse to about 80cm). I was hoping there was some heavy duty telescopic that would be heavy duty enough to bring in a decent pelagic. If this happens to exist it would be ideal because the rods could be rigged up before heading out, whereas a three piece would have to be rigged on the ocean which I have learnt can be painful or at least slow. Would love to hear what you guys run and will update if I find anything that seems good in search.
Cheers

Brodie_S reacted to kmcrosby78 in Tsunami in Tonga - warning for Australia East Coast
You may have already seen/heard that there was a tsunami in Tonga today. Fingers crossed for the Tongan people that there isn't too much damage/loss of life. A warning has been issued for our section of the East Coast of Australia for tonight. My family are planning to go through Sth Passage Bar at first light Monday morning so we'll be monitoring any lingering effect of this on swell, etc.

Brodie_S got a reaction from ellicat in knots
Yeah sure . Before I was using just the standard Alberto and I kept Experiencing issues with it. Such as if I got snagged and absolutely needed to snap the line and was using 6 braid and 6lb leader the knot would snap and I’d have to tie a new leader . Now 95 percent of time when the same thing happens even with heavier leader the. The line will snap not far from the end of the rig and I’ll still have plenty of leader left . I use this Alberto variation for all my light tackle stuff but for my heavier gear I use the FG. It’s only a small adjustment to the standard Alberto but man it makes a massive difference of the strength in the knot

Brodie_S reacted to ellicat in What did you leave behind ?
Luckily I took 3 rods all rigged and ready and had plastics onboard. Didn't do me much good though. Between @Another Wazza and I we managed to have 5 mackerel hits, for two hookups for two dropped boatside.... It was one of those days. Wazza did manage to complement the esky with 2 legal squire which he generously donated to my kitchen.

Hi Brian
Once my mate and I were fishing - we left one of the rods in the water and didn’t realise until 10 minutes into the drive home!

Hope you still got a fish in @ellicat I made it to the ramp one day without any rods. 40 minute drive back home then another 40 minutes back to the ramp.

Brodie_S reacted to charlie.hans.fishing in Daiwa Aird 2500 or Shimano Sahara 2500
Hi Oliver274
I'm definitely into Daiwa gear and have a friend who uses the AirD a lot.
However I'd say the Sahara is of slightly better quality for this price range and I believe it has a longer warranty than the AirD.
The AirD is definitely a great option if you are on a super tight budget, but overall the Sahara and AirD cost fairly similar prices.
It's really up to you when in comes to feel and quality.
Maybe head to a tackle store that supplies both the Sahara and the AirD and ask to look at them in hand.

Hi Flopper
The other thing to be careful about is leaving your leader in the sun. I find this can significantly weaken it.
Cheers Hamish

I recently reloaded my reels with 6lb braid and bought some 10lb leader all has been good until this week
I tried to rerig yesterday & every time I tied my leader on it broke when I pulled it tight.
I have been using a double uni knot
Am I pulling too hard or has my leader had it it's only about 3 months old
