Fish with a story.
Just prior to this GT I lost a 17 kg Mac rite at the boat after a half hr fight on 20 lb braid on lite spin gear (pfleuger arbor and 4-6 kg daiwa rod) I was flicking Z MAN Diezel mood ring 3 inch. They go well usually, Esp if you paint the tail yellow.
So nuffing for another half hour. I was pushing for time as the ramp I use is mud bank at 1 mtr of tide.
So what happens as im ripping the lure in to get goin it takes off 10 ft from the boat and i saw a silver flash giving me hope. . 20 seconds later the spool is half empty. Thinking possibly another big mac I threw the anchor, Started the motor and gave chase. Half an hour into it i figured possibly a big trevally. I couldnt bring myself to cut him off so I chased and chased and chased. He sat 5 mtrs off the bottom the whole fight as each time i went over him thats where he was on the sounder.
An hour and a half later and a couple of miles (see track) he finaly gave up. So I dragged him in and took a quick selfie. Not a bad fish EST 30 kg on 20 lb braid (suffix) plus as that eski is 1.2 mtrs long. Then let him go.
Then I gunned it back to my anchor float and retrieved it.
Then the heavens opened up... absolutely pelted down and had a 6 mile run strait into it in an open tinny. Not fun
Remember the tide issue... well the prediction was right. I got back to ramp, Well 30 mtrs from it. Jumped out and dragged myself thru the mud well up to my ass. Drove the ute down, Ran out the 4wd winch back to the tinny so another treck thru the mud up to my ass. Then back thru the mud to the ramp again. Winched the boat across the mud.. Spun the ute around and winched the boat on. Not wanting to filthy up the Family car I sat on the car cover luckily stashed in the tray.
Then got home to... you all know this one.. "where you been, you were meant to be home 3 hrs ago"...
Well you will never believe this story so I atleast had a picture to prove my lateness... HHHhaaa
Pfleugar arbor( killer reel, so many good fish, Punch above there weight) not over expensive either and cast a mile.
ZMAN diezel 3 inch moodring. Killer lure. Unbreakable
20 lb suffix braid. well cant fault it.
40 lb flurocarbon joined to 3 inches of single wire in front of lure with albrite knot.
Flurocarbon to braid FG knot.

Mission reacted to Andrew_P in Whiting love Yewgary
My neighbour Wendy looks after her elderly mother (94 not out) and has shown a very keen interest in the adventures of Yewgary especially the contents of its esky 😆. She mentioned her favourite eating fish were surf bream from Evans Head that her old neighbour brought back from their annual pilgrimage. Full of bravado from my last little excursion out the seaway I asked her if she would settle for some whiting. Yes that would be great she said and I thought oh sh!t, I haven’t fished for whiting since I was a kid!
Not long after sending a quick message to Brian @ellicat to see if I could tag along on his next trip to the Nerang and Brian had given me the good oil and even encouraged me to go myself.
Well everything lined up for a Thursday crack and my mate from work (who hates fishing) was even on holidays down the coast so I invited him along to chew the fat. A quick stop at the Gem for some bait and Yewgary was soon in the Nerang.
We got to the spot and anchored up, deployed our lines and I got a fish straight away! A nice legal whiting around 26cm. Slipped him in the esky and waited, waited, waited. The tide turned and not much was happening til Darren’s rod loaded up ever so gently. He waited a good 30 seconds before striking and there was a heap of weight on his line, with the fish taking drag against Darren winding. This fish had it’s head into the current and was fighting hard all the way. A few runs near the boat and a large brown shadow appeared which we both called for a nice flatty! I grabbed the net and the fish took a lunge near the boat before popping up and into the net. This was no flathead it was a horse of a Nerang river whiting! Darren was laughing now at the size of his “flatty” and it measured at 36cm! He was super stoked but more excited that a spot “some bloke on the internet” told me about had actually produced a couple of fish 🤣
We stayed til about 9pm and ended up with 5 fish from 26-36cm. Not a busy session but very comfortable and enjoyable fishing nonetheless.
After cleaning the boat the next morning I popped over to Wendy’s with 4 prime fillets of whiting for her and her mother. She was very pleased and kept saying how great a fisherman I must be to offer a feed then actually deliver on it. 🤣 Well I think it was more good luck and the willingness of AFOers like Brian (“some bloke on the internet”) to share their knowledge that contributed to the catch but I’ll take the complement anyway!
Thanks again Brian you’ve made 4people’s days with your help 👍🏻 I’d love to fish the next Nerang whiting session in Yewgary next to Ellicatch.

Hey guys,
I've been up north past Lockhart River since last Friday with a mate and doing a bit of fishing. Currently having a rest day after 4 long magical weather days out on the reef and in the cooking sun.
Its been neap tides and hardly any flow so far (thus fishing has been a little slow for some species) but things are starting to move a bit more now and should be firing in a few days time for the next reef trip.
Here are a few pics!
The shack
The ramp
Restoration rock
The town
The rig (Liams renegade 420, same as what I used to own. Love those things!)
Day 1 on middle reef. Caught about 15 trout on the flats and 4 of the 7 species up here so far. All on Gobblers lures ripped past the shallow bommies.
Day 2 on outer reef 50km offshore. Some bigger fish around and subsequent dustings. Lots of trout and co again. Nice bluefin trevally off the top.
Amazing sights many sharks
day 3 outer reef. Passionfruit trout and coronation trout.
Day 4 Bligh Reef. Not many pics, but a stunning day! No wind all morning, it was HOT (Suffered heat stress later that day). Had a 100kg+ black marlin followed stickbait to the boat. Same with Wahoo. Caught 4 species of tuna so far (longtail, mac, skipjack, yellowfin) as well as 3 species of mackerel. Some big yellowfin 60km offshore but could only get small ones past the sharks.
Lockhart River ramp
yellowfin sashimi. The best I've had
Rest day feat. Iced filter coffee
Still over a week to go, will post more as the trip unfolds.
Cheers,
Sam

Mission reacted to Brodie_S in River sessions volume 4 . Flathead in rain
Today I thought it would be a good idea to go for a fish at my local river and target some flathead with my new reel a shimano sedona 2500 spooled with some 8lb braid And I tied on a 10lb leader . Got down there and put on a rain coat and got to business tying on a 1/6 jig head and a 3 inch plastic that I got the other day at my local tackle shop can’t remember the brand it was some weird brand that I found in the discount bin . Anyway first 15 minutes nothing then all of the sudden bang I’m on to something decent drag goes screaming fallowed by some decent headshakes I bring the fish in and manage to get it in the net after a few attempts. It’s a decent size flathead 52cm the flatty was I got a photo and then quickly brain spiked it and bleed it out after that I cast in the same spot and hook a barely legal flathead I do this because sometimes flathead hang around each other I put the fish straight back in the drink then after that it goes quiet again Im thinking about going home because I was kind of sick of the rain and wind at that point but I kept trying I got 2 more fish both of them I dropped probably would have been legal size but not massive fish anyway after that I move off the jettie and try a little gravel bank nothing really there final cast my lure is in 2 inches of water just as I went to lift it out of the water another barely legal flathead comes out of crystal clear shallow water and smash’s my lure and I drag him in I didn’t even bother for a photo at that point because I was sick of the cold and he went straight back in the water
gear . Shimano sedona 2500 reel match with a 2-4kg daiwa team nero rod 8lb braid 10lb leader 1/6 jig head and 3 inch plastic
weather . Light winds every now and then you would get a heavy cold gust of wind . 20C felt like 10C sprinkling rain the whole time . 3 days before the new moon .first second hour of the run out to the second last hour of the run out tide
little flathead caught just after the big one
Testing out my new reel today
52cm flathead
The lure I used

Mission reacted to Dinodadog in Found some willing schools.
Found a couple of schools that were OK and one that was not OK. Managed 77 bass,2 yellas and a heap of forkies.I pulled up over this school that looked good and the first thing up was a mongrel forkie, so I said i'll give it another chance and rebaited, then all 3 rods buckled over the side and up came a forkie on each one, well I quickly moved on from that spot.
