I'm thinking bullrout. There are some nasty little buggers that get caught in prawn nets down here called Fortescues but they are different.

My goal is to have as much fun as I have had this year.
Before Jan this year I hadn't seriously fished for the last 15 -20 years. (Work, young kids and their activities etc took precedence). They gave me a lovely Christmas gift last year (a fishing charter) and it really reignited my passion for fishing. I have a bit more time on my hands now that we are empty nesters so I have put in quite a few hours and enjoyed it immensely (even the times I when I didn't catch anything) 🙂

SuperHans got a reaction from AFO in Freezing Yabbies Aka Nippers
In the 1970s/1980s I remember SEQ TV in QLD had a weekly fishing show with Stan Tappenden ? called Hook Line + Sinker.
One really good bit of advice was how to freeze yabbies so that they didn't go mushy when thawed.
All I remember was that the process involved putting them cold water and salty water before boiling them. I've forgotten the details, but remember them being really tough, bright red and excellent bait after thawing.
Does anyone recall how this is done?

    Hi DB,
yep, jennies are OK to take in NSW, but remember that they must be returned if they have eggs and that crabs here are measured differently than in Qld.

    Hi DB,
soz if the description was unclear. If you have any other ideas I'm happy to consider them. I'm thinking that a small split shot on the trace may help it sink a little faster and overcome any wave action that brings the bait inshore. I'll cross that bridge when I come to it 'though. PS I'm glad you arent raiding our wholesome clean living NSW jennies for your decadent crab junket to Victoria 🙂

    Hi Hamish,
I started using poddy mullet early this year and have never looked back. If something hits a poddy its probably a good fish and doesn't muck about. I usually bring home a keeper or two when I fish now.  I am in the Sydney region so this is a good result given the fishing pressure.

    Hi BWB,
you are right. I also like running sinker rigs but sometimes a fixed sinker is the only option (eg star sinkers to anchor a rig in the surf).
I guess for me it is a choice of getting a live bait further out where I want it and hopefully where the fish are, versus putting it closer where I don't think they are. Also I am banking on predators liking live mullet so much they will nail it and wont fool about with it.

Thanks Ellie, I'll check them out. I don't have a boat so although Willy suits me just fine, I thing an extra check or two is a good idea before taking out a boat.

I used to wade through various links with multiple tabs like bom.gov to determine what the weather forecast, local tide time, wind direction/strength, moon phase, sunrise/sunset etc was before thinking of going for a fish.
Then I found.................................drum roll...................................WillyWeather. Its so good to have all of these things on the one site and so easy to navigate (eg in top left the "View Locations Map icon) allows you to scroll to nearby locations in case the conditions like wind dont look appealing.
I guess many of you already know of it, but in case you don't, it saves a lot of trouble.

It is very handy and I use it in combination with other websites to try to get a feel for the wind forecast/s. I don't trust Willy alone.
Other websites to check wind forecast include -
