Thanks for the tip Drop bear. This gives me a bit of confidence. I've been living in the area a couple of years now and have very little luck (including at said rock wall). I'll definitely give the foreshore a crack over Christmas and see how I go.

Great write up mate. Don't think I've ever seen so much dedication to getting a fish up and swimming again. Top commitment from your dad to jump in that water too, I certainly wouldn't do it after catching a few of those demon eel pike! Great stuff.

Hey Brian
Shame about the lack of fish over those two sessions, but like you always tell me in the BR sessions that are bad your persistence will surely pay off! I reckon it's a pity that you didn't get rewarded on a good snapper.
Good job to Shaun for playing a catty on 4lb - that would sure be some fun. Bummer about the flatty realisation - it will be out there next time.
It was 4lb braid with 8lb mono leader, but yeah when it first took off I thought I was no chance of getting it up, particularly after Ellie got reefed. But gradually I began to make ground on it...all the while imagining a big snapper coming to the surface and the stories I'd tell my grand kids about how I pulled this monster from the depths on 4lb....
So yes, needless to say when I realised it was a catty I was a tad deflated. That said it gave me a very enjoyable fight and I was happy to get him up.

I took a mate there not too long ago for a flick, he’s around 100kg and was struggling to stay on top of the mud, he reckoned I was like one of those birds that walk on water lilly’s barely sinking down at all, an advantage of being 30kg lighter perhaps?.
I'm close to 100 so maybe that's part of the problem, I've stacked on a bit too much iso weight Look if the mud is anything like it is where I went I might play it safe and give it a miss.

Lol. You know my dad did a similar thing, except he jumped off into some reef and scatched the **** out of his legs. Maybe fishing blunders are a genetic condition?

Do this. Take worms or a yabby pump.
Catch fish.
Oh bloody hell I was in completely the wrong spot! That might go some ways toward explaining this whole messy situation. Thanks for that, I'll definetly give that spot a go.

Not so long ago I jumped in at Jacob's Well and went up to just over my knees. Fortunately I didn't have far to walk
Ha! My hands were that caked in mud I wasn't game to even try. I'd probably have dopped my phone and just added to my misery anyway.
Good to know even seasoned experts like your good self make mistakes ocassionaly too. Makes me feel a tad better

hmmm. the only thing missing from this tale of woe... is ellicat`s participation and exploits
Haha oh man I'm glad he wasn't there to witness this embarassment. Now I look at that photo of the mud flat again it seems a lot bigger. What was I thinking? Ah well, you live and learn.

This is my first fishing report here. I wish it could be a tale of glory. But sadly it’s not that kind of story. This is a messy tale of misadventure. A cautionary tale that may make you feel a little better about your own fishing failures.
So, after reading some promising forum stories about fishing the mud flats at Lota creek at low tide for whiting and flatties, I thought I’d give it a crack.
“You might get a bit muddy” they said. Bahhh, a little mud never hurt anyone, I thought to myself. How foolish I was.
I got to Lota creek and gazed out over the patch of mud, just a short stroll across the flats and I’d be in the perfect spot. So with hope in my heart and the dream of some nice whiting fillets in my stomach I set off. Things started badly, within 10 metres I was in ankle deep and had lost both shoes (thankfully an old pair). I’m not going to let some lost shoes stop me getting to the promised land I thought. I’ll be alright.
I wasn’t alright… By half way mark I was up to my knees and starting to struggle. Suddenly that small patch of mud was looking more like several football fields. I can’t go back now I thought, so I lurched forward, each step requiring herculean effort to wrench my foot out of the mud, only for it to squelch down into another deep hole, making a hissing noise that sounded disturbingly like a disgruntled demon being exorcised.
After taking several mini breaks I was finally close enough to the water to throw in a line. There was just one problem….I was completely and utterly knackered.
So I collapsed onto my tackle bag, and sat there hyperventilating, contemplating all my poor life choices, slowly sinking and pondering better times. Like when I was sitting comfortably on @ellicat's boat, sipping a coffee and not caked from head to toe in mud that smelt of cow ****.
After about 15 minutes I mustered the strength to have a cast. I managed to catch a 3 inch whiting. “Well ****, that makes it all worth it”. I thought to myself gloomily. After a short while the tide started to come in, and I was done, so I began the long, long walk back.
Upon reaching the ramp I kind of understood how captain cook must have felt when he stepped foot on our shores for the first time. Relief is an understatement. I gave myself a bath under a park tap. A few people slowed down as they drove by to view the swamp monster freak show.
So… all in all, not a very successful fishing adventure. In fact, a pretty ****ing **** one. On the plus side, I got a hell of leg workout and now have an excuse to take several long showers. I'll be keeping my feet planted firmly on land from now on.

First spot saw us getting pickered by something too small for 3/0's so we moved in a little shallower where the bites were better but we were worse. Fish were leading about 4 to nil when @shaun1800 finally avoided the donut boating an undersize grassie. Tick 1 off the species list as this was the target for here. Fish continued to rack up a score against us so decided to head to the Rous where @Drop Bear pointed me this morning saying the mackerel were still on the chew..
So we arrived at the Rous and deployed our lines with pillies under a float and proceeded to berley up. The current wasn't ripping through but was a good steady pace. To wile away the waiting we deployed our light gear hoping for some whiting to stock the bait freezer. They played the game sporadically amongst some rock whiting, tarwhine, tiddler squire and other little creatures I can't remember (or choose not to....grinner). I replaced my pillie at one stage with a whiptail hoping a bit of movement might help us.
After about 2 hours of being patient we upped anchor and headed towards Fisherman's Gutter where we drifted a line about 5 times collecting a few whiting each drift to add to the esky.
I also managed to hook this beast on the retrieve -
Not the size I was after but another target species ticked off.
A beautiful calm day in the Bay with crystal clear water. Not so good for fishing but great for the soul.
Hope you workers enjoyed work today...
Thanks for the day @shaun1800. Welcome aboard again if you dare.
We may not have a caught any monsters but the conditions were so beautiful, it was just great to be out there, particularly for a landlocked dangler like me.
Thanks for the fantastic day out on the water Elli, you were an exceptional boaty host. I'd be happy to be your second mate any time, maybe we can put those whiting to good use

Youtube can't replace time on the water . That seems to be the key from all the tips you find on here.
Cracking the fishing code is a lifelong activity
Ha! So true. If youtube = time on the water I'd be the world's greatest fisherman

I've been watching a bunch of youtube videos of guys catching snapper from yaks lately and it looks like a lot of fun.
I'll definetly keep an eye out for your next post

Yeah the first bream I caught on a soft plastic (on the Brisbane River under a bridge next to norman bridge reserve) was a super exciting and rewarding moment. I've struggled to catch much since aside from a decent flatty in hemment. I just find I end up getting snagged on stuff and get frustrated with re-rigging etc and not catching anything. I like the simplicity of bait but I also like the idea of not having to buy it over and over again.
Yep I'm landbased. I've borrowed my dad's kayak and tried the raby bay canals once (again with soft plastics). Didn't get much but it was a bit of fun.

Thanks mate, I appreciate it.
I had a mate I used to go out with regularly but he prefers to do his fishing on Tinder these days, so he doesn't get out much (and still doesn't catch much either I might add... ha!)

Thanks, long time lurker, first time poster.
I've only fished saltwater in Queensland (was born in Ballarat and used to fish fresh water as a kid down there). I'm open to having a crack at freshwater though.

I love wetting a line but have always struggled to find time, particularly since becoming a dad. Well, like a lot of people I was made redundant from my job recently so suddenly I have plenty of time for fishing.
I moved to wynnum about 6 months but haven't really had much luck in any of the recommended spots.
It would be good to explore some new spots and try to learn a thing or two (still struggling to figure out the bloody soft plastics). So if anyone's keen to go for a fish somewhere (happy to venture out to redcliffe etc), let me know.
