  1. Should be plenty of options staying on plantation. If not try Fiji Surf Co they will troll you around for a mahi mahi, wahoo or tuna. the namotu guys have a boat called Cobalt that do a range of fishing but super dooper expensive
  2. Yeah mate I bought the pe 1-2 I saw the 0.8-1.5 but couldn’t justify it! Samurai have high quality blanks and Fuji components (same company). Will pair with a ocea jigger 1500 and pe2 to jig for trout at the reef. Funstick!
  3. I moseyed into TW too and picked up a Samurai extracta jigging rod for $200. Titanium guides on it woulda cost me about that if I was building it myself!
  4. Nibble tips are my tip! Live yabbies and worms work well for sand whiting. Anchor up and fish the edges of banks. Should be a chance of some bycatch using live yabbies. Enjoy!
  5. And if you want to get the Nissan home take a Toyota!
  6. im in the market for similar and ive seen a few for sale on this side of the country. i think the hulls are imported by Haines and fitted out here rather than made here (but i could be wrong). i did a bit of googling and the SCB (not sure whether they are affiliated or not but similar production method for their hulls) in the US have had lots of trouble with their hulls cracking - so not sure that the technology will withstand Australian conditions. Id hate to drop coin on a fibreglass boat and have to nurse it like a pressed tinny! Never ridden in one but so cannot give a definitive review - id be interested to hear from anyone that has owned/ ridden in one!
  7. Sounds like crisis averted Ed! I'd have sold the Jeep after the first trip (actually i would never have bought a Jeep in the first place!). If you get to the Daintree go check out the Daintree Ice Cream Company in Diwan. The ice cream is handmade on site and the girls in the shop are friendly. Its cool to walk around the exotic fruit trees and if Daintree Dave is there ask if he can show you his cocoa and vanilla plants. Disclaimer: Daintree Dave may/may not be my brother in law (fishing tragic too) Andrew
  8. rule of thumb for rod ratings is that optimum fishing is in the middle of the range. i.e. if you have a 2-4kg set up fish 3kg line (8lb) but it will fish 2kg and 4kg if you need it to. i prefer to choose my lighter rods/ blanks on the lure weight it is designed for. heavy rods i will go the middle of the line rating setting your drag at ~1/3rd of the breaking strain is a hangover from IGFA game fishing days where they were fishing tested mono lines. this allowed them to up the drag to 1/2 or even 3/4 of the breaking strain of the line if they needed to. you should set your drag at whatever seems right for the fish you are chasing - light if its bream so you dont pull the hooks, heavy for fish like jacks you will be pulling out of the structure. most people i fish with dont measure their drags using scales but set it and adjust depending upon the species they are chasing. remember your reels are designed to give fish drag if they run so you dont snap the line. if you set the drag in the correct range you shouldnt need to adjust mid fight. if you do need to adjust go easy until you are gaining ground on the fish. and remember to back it off before you cast again!
  9. Probably not. Especially with sharks around you will be lucky to land one. 20lb minimum, 30lb is good, some people use 50lb
  10. put a wanted ad on FB marketplace or, if you are happy with a substitute, Pflueger is owned by Pure Fishing who also own Penn, Berkley and Abu Garcia. So you could look for a rod with similar specs from these companies. Abu Garcia Rayrex has a SP702 for around $100. Rayrex II Spinning - Abu Garcia Fishing (abugarcia-fishing.com.au) I rate the Abu Garcia salty stage line of rods for feel and components; likely made in the same factory as the previous generations of Pflueger....(Chyna) My guess is those were build on IM6 (intermediate modulus) blanks which are widely available; any decent custom rod builder could access a similar blank and components (cork grips? fuji alconite guides?) and build you a reasonable replica, even better if you drop the old rod off to him/her to plan the build off
  11. i'm not sure Brian but this may be a little clue...
  12. Nice Neil! Hamish - it looks like a Dark-tailed sea perch Lutjanus lemniscatus https://bie.ala.org.au/species/https://biodiversity.org.au/afd/taxa/5c649b84-7c35-4dca-a46e-1030b10aaa6b they have orange/yellow markings on each scale around the head Not very common and grow to about 55cm max. I've eaten one and it was delicious!
  13. Those G-force rods are excellent quality. Punch above their weight too. I’ve got a couple of the 7ft 8-15kg in spin and overhead and take them everywhere.

    snyder rod

Post some pics @TJJ and I’ll give you a guesstimate. The market for Snyder Glas ATS was very strong up until the 12 interest rate rises. Stuff is sitting for longer now but anything in good original condition still sells. Just going on the specs I’d estimate $180-230. High mount 2 piece rods don’t go as quickly as low mount (alvey) one piece blanks. If you have FB there are 2 pages I’d recommend you post on to get a value/sale (PM me). Don’t let anyone low ball you. There are some grubs out there (non AFOers!) looking to take advantage!
  15. I hear negative gearing is most boomer’s trick of choice ?
  16. Not that I saw Hamish. I’m a big fan of the Shimano baitrunner design given they invented it @Bretto77 just rod building stuff mate I hung on a few blanks while I was there so got a great idea of how certain blanks will feel built up
  17. I struggle to control myself when all the receptors are pinging from the sights, sounds and possibilities. It’s more like a heightened state - the Red Mist my mates call it
  18. I didn’t get there till 10:30ish but heard the line was out the door at 9. Pretty busy inside but good afta lunch.
  19. Some xraps, US style deck boots and cool plastics on display too. Stopped by the Fisheries Qld stand too
  20. Ok I thought I did better today but looking through my photos I’m not quite sure. Things that interested me were the REALLY big spin reels by Penn and Okuma (seriously hard to lift let alone cast), the new spin reels from majorcraft, a squid blade from TT (looks like the ecogear sx), some micro plastics from Zman and all the rod building bling from Fuji.
