  1. Finished the kingy rod for my mate Ash. He’s in Newcastle so it’s coming into kingfish time for him. This rod will primarily fish livies and chuck stickbaits if required. Matched to a Saragosa 10k and 50lb braid. I estimate I spent 10 hours on this rod. I can usually whack them out in 3-4 but this took a bit extra - double over wrapped guides, marbling, chevron wrap. 4 coats of epoxy. Hopefully he won’t need another one!

I think it was a mould he is holding. We got the head after it had been with the mould dude for more than 12 months!

    Ed’s Red

Ed Falconer from Keely Rose charters caught this monster red during covid. He donated it to our lab for estimating its age and I was one of the scientists that counted the rings. At 33 years it’s not the oldest red we have seen (43 year old female is) but definitely the biggest! Ed’s red
  8. Local? Wilson = made in China (except for Venoms which are $$$$$$) and Gary howard = apart from the oversize surf rods and a few other lines he rolls here they are made in Vietnam. im all for supporting Aussie businesses - it keeps people in jobs. It’s just tough when they shout everyone 4000 new rods and a week on the Big Cat and I don’t get invited!
  9. Depends what they stuck it on with but heat is your friend. Heat gun as you rotate the rod then you should be able to get a flathead screwdriver between the gimbal and the blank and very gently prise it off. Be careful not to use too much heat as this can delaminate the blank

  11. The M10 will likely be a Snyder Glas blank - definitely worth replacing the reel seat. the Fuji HD reel seats are great. The ally ones can corrode with metal reel feet and clamp nuts. im brisbane southside if you want a hand with replacing it @Junky
  12. Nice work @Sylvathorn! It takes a certain type of person to rescue rods in that condition! Restorations and rebuilds are like renovations - you pay to pull it apart and to put it back together! Give me a new blank and guides any day.
  13. I don’t know the proper name but the brown thing is called a kelpy The other is a fringe fin trevally
  14. Same here with the US freight situation. I’m in Brisbane so it’s a quick trip to the goldy to United Tackle and Exclusive Tackle down there or occasionally I’ll go to Ballina to Frogleys (Fuji). Have you heard of Aaron McKell up your way? He does Fuji components and a few lines of the US blanks (Rainshadow, NFC, Phoenix) he might be worth contacting. I’ve ordered from him before and his shipping to Brisbane was reasonable and quick.
  15. Where are you located and where do you get your blanks/supplies from @Sylvathorn?
  16. They are strong in the fact that they have thick walls for such thin diameter blanks. I’m sure the Japanese make strong, powerful blanks for slow jigging big lures but they will still be slow to moderate tapers, and have a hard tip for moving the heavy jigs. A more traditional “speed” or “deep” jigging rod will have the power with a faster action/softish tip depending on the jig and pe rating. I would recommend googling “United Composites” or “black hole” and “deep jigging”
  17. How about when you catch a fish? Jammy @Doughnuts
  18. Unreal conditions and great catches! Is that a dark tailed seaperch after the girl in the wheelhouse pic?
  19. sounds like they are using slow pitch jig rods. These are thin diameter, heavily reinforced rods between 6 and 7ft with a parabolic (slow) action. These are designed to work lures of specific weights using lines of specific ratings. Some people use these for bait fishing and they are sensitive but parabolic rods aren’t the best for fighting fish. I’ve built a couple for friends using a range of blanks depending upon their needs. Some of the questions I would ask before building would be: Where are you fishing and what species are you targeting? what lb / PE line? What jigs/rigs will you be using? what depth will you be fishing in? and go from there If you want to go off the shelf, My advice would be to take your reel into Jones’s (Northside) or tackle warehouse (southside) and ask the dudes to give you a range of rods to put your reel on, thread the line thru and bend them. See what balances well and feels good (grip length/design etc) then you should have a good idea what you want. there’s plenty of info out there the east coast American dudes are fully into it.
  20. yeah it just makes them much easier to bait up with the swivel in between, and i reckon they swing better when you set the hooks (the 7766s did get stuck in some funny positions at times) the only downside with the big guns is they are chemically sharpened so you cant really sharpen and re-use them when they go blunt, which makes them expensive
  21. Surely Daiwa do a jigging rod you are after. The Shimano ocea jiggers look good if you are willing to spend money! Lots of youtube floggers flogging the Nomad jiggers but have heard of more than a few breakages in reel life.... My recommendation would be to get a custom rod builder to recommend a blank and build to spec (you can even provide them the reel to get the guide spacings perfect!). Try Peter Flor @florless rods his rods are high quality, he is great to work with and will have what you are after.
