    Hi guys and girls,
Had quick morning session before crappy, life stuff that gets in the way of fishing, other commitments.
A perfect early morning, warm, no wind and start of the run-in tide.
When you paddle up a creek in these conditions with a bright orange sunrise, smooth glassy water and the birds in full song it's hard to remember what time you had to be at other commitments, why and what excuses you can think of to get out of them. 😬
Not a lot of fish caught but found a few flathead and a nice healthy little jack.
I have become obsessed with chasing jacks, such an aggressive hard fight fish.
Even the smaller ones nearly rip the rod out of your hands when they smash your lure, and they seem to hit soon as you are daydreaming and not paying attention.
    Thanks.

I had a 4 hour break between jobs today so I threw the gear in the truck this morning and had a great long lunch session.
I got 12 trout all up and bought home a 4lb that took the hooks too deep and I brought home 2 6lb and a 7lb browns.

    Hi all,
I managed to escape for a few hours yesterday for an arvo session before the rain kicked in.
I was fishing a small creek near Arrawarra NSW that is not always open to the ocean a few hundred meters from the beach. I was hoping to upgrade on the 43cm jack from last week, but it was not to be.
The creek is very shallow, about a meter deep with a few small deeper holes. Lure of choice was the 4" paddle tail plastic rigged on a weedless weighted hook, no jig head.
No monster fish caught but hooked a couple of small jacks, nice trevally and a small flatty so was still a great afternoon on the water.
I haven't caught many trevally and don't know what type it is, hoping someone here can give me an ID on which species this trev is (trevally is at 3mins on vid).
    Thanks.

Alex2505 reacted to Thorbjorn Hale in Biggest brisbane bullshark
    Hi all
i have recently started targeting some brisbane river bullsharks near my home in Bulimba as it is starting to warm up again. I had some success on Sunday when I caught a nice 84cm pup (which I was pretty pleased with). I finished school early today and thought I might try and catch a few more. I sent out some fairly small slabs of eel and a big eel head on my bigger spin rod. After waiting for around an hour I started getting some small taps on my bigger spin gear and didn’t think much of it so I waited for about 10 minutes. All of a sudden it springs into life and takes a slow run, so I flick over my bait runner and hold on. To my surprise my it shoots off taking a run lasting around 30 seconds on tight drag. It takes me 15-20 minutes to finally get it to shore and it turns out to be a 207cm behemoth off a bullshark. I sent it’s two remoras back into the river and managed to dehook it and it released (after some coaxing) back to its home safely.
For context I am 6,3 so it looks small😂

    Morning all,
The jack addiction has well and truly kicked in again now the weathers getting warmer.
Managed to get out for an afternoon flick using soft plastics and hard body lures. Picked up a few flathead bycatch but not much action for most the afternoon.
I had pretty much given up any hope of a jack and was about to pack it in and thought I'd throw a couple of casts under the bridge next to where my car was parked and hook up to a nice 43cm jack.
I was lucky it ran away from the closest bridge pylon heading towards the pylon on the other side which gave me a couple of seconds to turn its head.
Hooking up close to the pylons usually end for me in a split second, you feel the hit and by the time I've lifted the rod back its all over with a snapped leader wrapped around the oysters on the pylon.
And if you can't turn them quick with a tight drag, they usually drag me and the kayak into the bridge pylon within a few seconds.
You can see in the vid, in only the few seconds till I got it's head up it had almost dragged my kayak into the bridge.
They are such a strong aggressive fish.
Sorry for the over excitement in the vid when I get it in the net🤣, just couldn't believe I hooked one when I'd thought the day was over.

went out to bribe on Saturday with a mate and got some blue swimmers and a big flathead that I hooked 4 times before landing, and we didn’t have a net so we used his shirt lol.  Then Sunday went back after trying to get some tuna off Morton but it just wasn’t the day, hooked a 40cm flounder on a weedless paddle tail and another good flathead around 45cm.

    G'day guys,
I've been lurking the board for a few weeks, thought I would introduce myself. My old man is a mad keen fisho and got me into it. He used to live in Brisbane and I have been following in his footsteps fishing, mainly Brisbane River and offshoots as well as the Pine River and the Pumicestone Passage on the Bribie side. I'm always hearing that Bribie is a nursery but so far I've mostly collected a lot of donuts up that way.
I have managed a few legal fish mainly in Brisbane out of boggy creek - have attached a few pics. I fish soft-plastics and hard bodies, without much success on the latter. Have steered clear of bait so far.
I'm currently stuck in 40cm flathead purgatory, but hoping to put up some monsters to rival the big dog soon...
    Cheers

Headed out this morning nice and early to White Patch, Bribie Island. Had only scouted here once before on a high tide so I didn't really know what the day would look like.
I snuck out of my girlfriends house at 3am. The roads were very quiet this morning, and I arrived at White Patch at about 4:20am with a Morayfield BP croissant and coffee to fuel me for the session. Dawn gets earlier quick in summer!
I had hoped to target some whiting off the bat, so I kept my 6lb bream leader on, and rigged a 2 inch Berkeley Minnow Grub in the banana prawn colour, and started flicking it in the shallow sandy patches between the weed beds. I had a flash of success on my second cast, reeling in a small whiting (my first ever!)

    IMG_0336 (1).HEICIMG_0340.HEIC
There were plenty of boils on the surface, and I had a lot of nibbles on the minnow grubs as I made my way casting down the beach. The smaller fish were chewing through the little plastics at pace, so I decided to change tactics.
I switched to a 2.5in ZMan Slim SwimZ with pro-cure applied, but this didn't get many takers. As I waded out onto some less weedy sandflats, I switched to my go-to plastic - the Berkeley 4in minnow in pearl watermelon colour, and began to work this along the sandy drop-offs.
The minnow came through for me, and over the next couple of hours I caught several flathead.
    IMG_0343.HEICIMG_0344.HEICIMG_0345.HEICIMG_0349.HEIC

At 6:50am, right on low tide, I felt a bump with my lure just a few meters from my feet and hiked back for a hook set. My rod bent-over but it almost felt like I had been snagged. As I reeled backward, finally, the fish burst to life. It was an enormous flathead, I suspect over 70cm. It had a broad belly like only the bigger fish get.
I saw her cruise away from me and then line started peeling off my rod. I couldn't believe I had finally hooked a big fish, but I didn't panic and I let her have her head for 3 big runs. While I fought, I began worrying about my 6lb leader and praying it held on as I backed out of the water. I usually fish 12lb for flathead, but I had gone lighter due to a string of donuts at Bribie. Although I managed to keep her head low, sure enough, when she was about 5m away from shore and I started to get confident, my line popped, and the big girl shot off with my plastic. I have learnt a tough lesson about 'going light to get the bite'.
I was gutted, but I fished on and managed to land my first flatty on a hardbody - the Daiwa Double Clutch.

    IMG_0363.HEIC
All in all, a great day of fishing. Can't wait to get back and find the one that got away.

In a time when everything is either a reboot or a sequel, i'm back with my second Boggy Creek report.

First, the bad news - on Friday i was down there casting from the bank and not having much luck and had just lost the zerek soft plastic shrimp i'd bought the previous weekend when i decided to go for broke and use the fish trap lure and hooked onto what i thought was a big fish. i struggled with it for a bit before it went out into the middle of the creek and just sat at the bottom. i wasnt sure how to go about it as it felt being snagged and i was only on a light setup. i tried my best at reeling and when i felt it move slightly i made the mistake of ripping up and sure enough snapped the top of my rod off 😪
After a trip to the tackle warehouse in coorparoo the next day, i picked up a new rod and reel and headed down to Boggy again to hopefully make up for the previous outing and find out what did the damage to my rod.
My mate and I got down there just after 9am and planned to fish the incoming tide until 12-1. Both of us were using the 1/2 oz jigs with the 3" zman minnowz and just casted from the bank until at about 10:30am my mate managed to hook on to this nice flathead:

Then about half an hour later I got lucky as well and hooked onto this one:

At 56cm it was a personal best for me so i was pretty stoked, anything after this would just be a bonus
Unfortunately though i lost another flathead right at the bank about an hour later and that was all i could manage for the rest of the day.
Right before we were about to call it a day, we spotted the culprit from yesterday as it came right up to us at the bank.... a big stingray 😂 so maybe it was better i lost the rod as i have no experience dealing with those.
All in all, a good day out and was happy to make up for disappointing Friday!

PS - what do you guys think i could catch if i headed further up the creek? i've been told there could be threadfin, jewies and the occasional jack but i have no idea

    Cheers guys

Got home from fishing late Thursday and checked the forecast for when i could go again. Noticed Friday afternoon there was a window. Organised with eldest son,Mitch, to head out at 12.30pm.
By the time we came to leave my place the forecast had changed a bit, but we decided to launch anyway and have a look at what reality was. It wasn't too bad so we went to Green where we could not get the bait to bite. Fortunately I had some frozen pike in reserve, so we deployed a couple and also sent out a floating pillie in case any mackerel were about.
Plenty of action for the next couple of hours. I landed 2...a 44 and a 52. I lost a big model when my line got caught on the bottom right near the boat. I prayed for about 5 minutes but in the end it rubbed me off on the braid. Damn, I hate tying braid to leader on the boat.
Not long after the exact same thing happened to Mitch. Very frustrating for him as he hasn't caught a fish for ages. It would have been nice to get him on a big one, but not to be.
A few other failed hookups and two wobbygongs later we decided to call it around 5.30. Mitch's wobbygong was only a little tacker but mine was a horse unfortunately. Mitch landed a little squire about 25 to finish.
Also had a safety check from the water police.

We cooked up both for dinner, crumbed with chips and gutsed ourselves. 😄

    Hi all
I was lucky enough to be invited out to go fishing with Brian and Steve today (Friday) targeting mackerel in the Rous Channel, and possibly catching some reefies or winter whiting as well. Unfortunately, Steve was unwell leading up to the trip, so he was not able to join Brian and I today. We launched at Manly a little before seven, and motored out into the bay to carry out the first task - catching livies!
Initially, it was looking like there could be some rain. There were a couple of clouds about, but according to BOM it was clearing up/not that bad. There was also a bit of wind when we initially went out, and it was quite lumpy at our chosen location for bait. Regardless, we sounded around looking for some shows of pike, but we struggled for the first twenty minutes or so. Then, we found something that looked like it may have been pike, but after I pulled up an undersize squire we decided to continue our search. About 30 minutes later we had still gotten no livies so we decided to head to St. Helena island to have a look there. Apart from a small wrasse, this did not produce any livies either, so we motored back to the original spot, where we still could not manage any livies. The electric motor was easy to use though - it was going to be a lot better than anchoring!
Eventually, we decided it was calm enough to head over to the Rous, and with the radar showing no more storms and calm weather we were feeling hopeful for some mackerel. On arrival, the electric was deployed and it was holding fine in the current. We casted out our pilchards under floats and then chose to fish the bottom while we waited. After I landed a couple of pickers, Brian hooked up to something a bit more substantial. After a solid hit, he brought in a solid 33CM Venus Tuskfish - a welcome catch!

    Tusky
After that, Brian lobbed another cuttlefish piece down and so did I. It wasn't long before he was on again to something decent, and it showed itself as another tusky. Annoyingly, it got lucky and managed to shake the hook as Brian was about to lift it into the boat. I hooked up shortly after as well, and I managed to land a just undersize tusky. The conditions had improved considerably from the morning now, and it was quite calm!

Good day at the Rous Channel
Anyways, although we thought we might be on a patch of tuskies, they stopped chewing after that, meaning we went back to pulling in the occasional picker waiting for the mackerel lines to go off. We switched to long shank hooks in hope of some winteries, but they were no where to be found. Eventually, some birds started eating our pilchards - somehow managing to lift them out of the water repeatedly but not get hooked. We also saw a turtle breach, and Brian saw a dugong.
Suddenly, there were some bumps on my mackerel line and some line was tugged off. I quickly grabbed the rod and I was on a fish! I started cranking line back towards the boat, but the mackerel wasn't coming in easy and was taking some speedy runs. We eventually saw the shape of it, cruising towards us in the water - it then managed to shake the hooks... Lucky. The action hadn't ended yet though, and Brian's set up went off. This fish was fighting a lot harder than mine, and was taking some lightning fast runs - dangerously close to the electric motor propeller. It was looking like a big schooly, but we never got to see it because the line ended up breaking on the moving prop. Bugger!
We redeployed our baits and sat back down waiting again. It wasn't long before some more mackerel came along and my pilchard was being attacked. I started winding, and the mackerel was coming in to the boat. We had to land this one, we thought, and after some quick runs around the boat Brian grabbed my float and pulled in my first ever mackerel, a 70CM Schooly. Woohoo!

     70CM Rous Channel Mackerel 😀
We got our lines back out quickly and we were hopeful some more mackerel would come by but it had seemingly gone quiet. The tide was beginning to change now, but the spot lock was still holding us in position fine. We eventually drifted around with the rising tide, and after berleying a lot for quite some time Brian was on to another decent fish. He fought it to the boat and it was a nice tuskie, but like before it too managed to spit the hook. 😭. We decided to call it quits at about quarter past two, and for the last half hour or so I tried fishing my pilchard about 3 metres below my float. On the way back in (loved not having to pull in an anchor) I managed to lose my hat overboard but luckily we got back to it in time. Interestingly, when I filleted the tusky, it had shell coming from it's stomach, suggesting it maybe had been eating some crab.
Thanks heaps for taking me out today Brian, it was heaps of fun!
    Hope you enjoyed the reports,
    Cheers Hamish

    Hi all
My school holidays started yesterday, so I decided to start them the right way by going fishing. In the prior weeks, I had been busy with school, but managed one (pretty crappy) session at my local park.
The session at the park started off on a Friday arvo. I brought some dead bait along and first deployed lines, and then @TheCharliefisho arrived. I got to cast netting to try and catch some livies, but I couldn't manage anything good. Early on I think I got one bite on my heavy rod but for the next while it was dead. I eventually threw my net on top of four or five tilapias, and then another large one fell out in the following casts. Although it brought some excitement, it definitely wasn't welcome because it still means they are swimming around in the river. I eventually caught a couple of anchovies and bony bream, so we sat back and waited for a line to go off. Despite many mozzies, staying into dark, and a couple snags, we didn't end up catching anything. "Oh well", I thought - at least I went fishing!

The next session was a lot more exciting, and happened yesterday. I started the day off collecting livies for about an hour and a half, which mainly consisted of mullet and small silver biddies. I tried fishing briefly as well but did not have any success. After that, we determined we had enough bait to get started. The first fish of the day was a legal sized squire caught by Andrew - things were looking good. Surprisingly, it was not on a livie but instead a pilchard.
I started having some more luck in the cast net, and I got about 30 herring for bait in quick succession. Unfortunately for us, this is when we started pulling in toadfish after toadfish. They would all hit the bait/fight like an alright fish, but they were very disappointing to see. We did have the jetty all to ourselves though, which was good. It was a nice day, and, as it had not started to warm up, it was a good temperature.
As the tide started to run a bit harder, the fishing went quiet and our baits were consistently pickered. The tide was very slow compared to what it usually is, and I decided to experiment with a paternoster rig. I was dropping one line (light rod) straight down with a 6 ball sinker, and the other, with a size 4 star sinker, was being casted out into the middle of the river. Eventually, after some more toadfish and picker attacks, Andrew was on to another squire - which went undersize. After that, it was quiet again for another 45 minutes or so before he caught another legal squire which was released. At this point, I had still caught nothing - my most significant catch might have been a cast net full of decent sized scat.
The tide was half way through the rise when things went really quiet, and basically any livie was not getting a touch. In fact, the only thing that seemed to be catching fish at that point was pilchards, and even then they were only getting pickered to bits. It was at this point (a bit before 2) that we were all considering packing it in, as it looked like the bites had stopped. I did managed to land one sea toad in this period, and got mysteriously busted off by something which took my whole hook, dropper, and sinker as soon as it bit my herring.
At about 2, I switched my pilchard back to a live herring on my dropper rig and fired it out into the middle of the river. I went back to sit down but it didn't take long before the end of my 8 foot rod was bouncing around and line was being yanked off my baitrunner. I set the hook and got the line tight, and immediately felt a lot of strong headshakes. I was almost adamant my luck had not changed and I was on a toadfish, but the fish was taking a couple of snappy runs so I was eager to see it anyways. Initial thoughts were a slightly larger squire, but we were pleased to see a nice and fat grunter on the end of my line! After a couple more dives and a struggle landing it, the fish was eventually gaffed and lifted onto the jetty. Woohoo!

    60CM of Brisbane River Grunter
Following that, the fishing started to go crazy! Andrew had a fish on both of his lines at one point, and landed a legal squire after a nice tussle, and after I redeployed my bait with another live herring it didn't take long before I had a 39cm squire on the jetty as well. I was pretty happy with that, as it was my first from the Brisbane River. Michael then hooked up as well, but it was unfortunately just another toad. To finish the hot bite period off, Andrew pulled in a 35cm bream, which was a random but nice catch as well. It is worth saying this all happened in the space of twenty minutes, after hours of no action.

    Squire
Anyways, after the fish stopped biting so much (high tide change), Andrew headed off. We all managed to catch ourselves some keepers, but unfortunately for one other fella fishing on the jetty there seemed to be no more biting. Michael finished the day with a stingray, which seemed like it could be a thready at first due to the runs it was taking. I was happy with my PB grunter as I left the jetty, and I had some tonight - it's a delicious fish!

Kat and I went for a fish today. Plan was to launch at Bribie and head to a Caloundra spot.
Had engine troubles after we had jigged some live bait, so decided to fish there rather than risk things a further hour away at Caloundra. The current was raging on the last hour or so of the run in. We had two lines in each - 1 with livey and 1 with some cuttlefish head. Kat managed a few unders squire while I was getting nothing. Tossed out my delicious looking Chase Bait prawn imitation but by the time I'd got the bail arm over the plastic was already past me, so retired that idea. My livey rod went off and I played it for awhile but when it wanted to go it went. Eventually it cut me along the braid so suspect it was a shark.
Anyway, I finally got a bite and landed this fella, going 42 on the lie detector.

The tide turned and the boat turned too and we were closer to the mark now. But that didn't stop the fish from avoiding us... except for the wobbygongs that wouldn't leave @Kat alone. She hooked up to about 6 during the day and was only able to get the hook back from 1. Bloody nuisance things they are.
Finally Kat hooked up to another grassie, landing a 31 version. No photo sorry, but it looked just like my one only smaller.
Apart from that it was pretty non-eventful apart from a visit from some whales ... we were only in 5-7 metres of water.
