Our pet cow Sally gave us a new baby.
She's a favourite cow, raised as a pet, she came up near the house the other day mooing and carrying on and next morning the little one was there.
It's a heifer calf and the first from that new bull I got last year.
The camera dates are not right, I tried to reset it and ended up with next months  date on it and one from 2011.Not good with technology.

Hit up the new Caloundra mark from the other week with @benno573 again today. Target was the delicious Grass Emperor.
Predawn start saw us deploying baits at first light. Cuttlefish for starters. A couple of missed hits before Benno was onto a good one, going 53.5cm at sunrise.

    Pretty fish

A couple more fish at this spot before it went quiet, so we had a sound around for some fresh ground. Pretty quiet as the tide was slack, although we picked up a 60 odd schoolie on the pillie under a float.
A couple of spot changes and a few more fish over the side after the current picked up. A new PB for me, going 47cm.

The tuna were busting up around us for the whole morning, teasing Benno as they wouldn't take his slug. We saw the bait they were chasing and swapped down to a 10g slug. Still no cigar.
The floating pillie went off again, but after a bit of a weird fight turned into a suspected shark. Earlier Benno had captured a wobbygong, a turtle and a catshark as well. A few unders squire and grassies and a tiny cod, along with a couple of lancers nearly completed the morning.
Benno had an unweighted pillie floating out there and a good fish hit it - another good grassie around the high forties. At  this point we called it, before the wind was due to get up. Just after we started motoring back to the ramp, Benno spotted a tuna school not busting up. He quickly grabbed the rod and threw out the 10g slug. We watched as about 5 little mack tuna competed for it. Finally a hookup and a 30cm specimen made it into the boat for bait at a later date.
Back on land at 11.30am, we agreed it was an excellent way to spend a Sunday morning.  We split the catch and headed home.
A decent looking esky, with 7 grassies of quality size around, or bigger, than 40cm, a good schoolie and the mack tuna.

Thanks for the session Benno. (And thanks for winding in a couple of fish for me.)

    Hi all, been a while.
me and a mate decided to head out fishing on Sunday and try and get some prawns. He called out last second and I already had the boat ready, so headed into the bay on my tinny. Saw some bluefin jumping right next to the boat but couldn’t get any, hooked up on tuna 3 times but lost them each time.  Made it to Moreton and got to test the limits of my tinny

Alex2505 reacted to Jono4500 in Fraser island my way ( a little bit different)
    Hi again all,
With kids footy season and life in general about to disrupt my fishing ambitions, I threw my gear in the car, abandoned the family and work and arrived at Inskip to walk on to the 1st barge of the day for Friday. Arriving at the magical Fraser island to passing showers and bit of wind here and there I dragged my gear on foot a few clicks up the south western side to campgrounds, set up camp, then got into the fishing. Set out live herring and threw some halco slugs around I was soon onto the fish! Plenty of action over 2 days, numerous small pelagics and surprisingly a tally of 5 estuary cod near 50cm mark was amongst the highlights of the trip. Only really fishing the tide changes I had a few hours downtime so did some hikes inland in between for fun. Over 3 days my Garmin told me I clocked nearly 55km with only dingoes, dolphins and turtles to keep me company. No tuna (again) but gives me a reason to go back!

I had a great plan to take my heavy rod and a couple of Jackall Doozer lures out chasing a big cod.
Unfortunately there were no cod to be seen, I couldn't cast quite as far as I liked and the wind was pulling my line hard and my lure wasn't going where I wanted it too.
So I switched to my light 3kg outfit and started launching some McGrath vibes way out, and I suddenly hit into a good run of yellow belly.
I managed to land a 4.2kg,4kg,2.8kg and 1.8kg yella's before I decided enough was enough and headed home.

    Alex2505 reacted to Bretto77 in SuperKat's cape
A blight on the dedication to my own and significant others' self preservation was noted. I had to at least remember getting a line in the water. @Kat had been suffering my work affliction whilst breaking her own ground on the work front. We had not fished for too long.
Luckily, @ellicat gallantly exuded her talent and a suite of grassies earned @Kat a "cape" status earlier in the week. I had not done anything much except work, chores and transport kids since just after new year.
@ARKS2011, @Kat, Charlotte and myself launched (allbeit very late), Sunday morning from paradise point and headed towards jumpinpin. I don't know the place very well and it was a weekend day, so I assumed that there would be plenty of activity on the water, and given the timing, few fish. As it turns out I was correct.
It was a light gear/ live beach worm approach to attempt to get a feed of whiting.
We did a drift to begin with for minimal reward. One legal whiting is not a haul by any rational criteria. Charlotte and Amber seemed more keen on fighting than fishing.
We had a look at another spot briefly before finding somewhere we could drop the girls for a swim and a play on the beach. Kat and I deployed baits VERY close by. We were rewarded with miniscule tarwhine and whiting that would make great live baits (had they been the right species of course).
It was about this time that we noticed what appeared to be a small Stedgecraft convention happening around us. One, two, three pulled up close by in barely a meter of water. We wondered if @GregOug might pull up next?

They are sleek looking vessels and they had no problems in that depth. Looking at them I thought that all of them probably drew less water than Kat's tinny.
"No fish here".  Time to try another spot. So we collected two cooled and slightly de-energised children and headed off.
Charlotte was looking at the high sand dunes and wanting to run up them and slide down. Amber thought that she might make it halfway up before resting and going further. I looked at them and wished I still had that energy and enthusiasm 🤔. Due to environmental and self preservation considerations, such a scenario did not take place.
We settled on a spot that I had fished before and caught some reasonable whiting from. A handful of legal whiting found the esky via my hook and Kat remarked about losing her cape or leaving it in Brian's boat. I landed a small stingray and asked Kat if I should keep it for Brian as a mark of respect for his thoughtfulness in keeping the bream for me. The ray was promptly released.
@Kat landed some unders and a legal. It was tough going.
I will however, (from the far reaches of the shadows of @Daryl McPhee and @Bob9863 recently), take some solace in a 40cm model that was hooked fair and square in the top jaw on a no. 6 hook. It played up a little bit when it got close to the boat too.
Then it was time to head off. The girls mother was picking them up from the ramp across from the grand hotel. It was a busy run back there but conditions were pretty good. There were a few quite large and relatively quick boats heading the same way. The kids always want to go fast in the boat. A little wake surfing during the overtaking process earned me squeals of joy and delight from my children but scoldings from Kat.
We briefly tried a couple more spots after dropping back the kids but this didn't trouble the esky. In fact, all it earnt me was the opperculum spines of a very small flathead and associated blood loss.
It's good just getting out with your loved ones. We certainly didn't rape and pillage the fish stocks but there was a meal in the esky and good times were had.

    Hi everyone,
I've recently had 2 months on annual leave from work so high on the list was plenty of fishing. Pics are all better size goldens from Somerset , a place I do love to fish when all the ski boat and jet ski owners are at work. This summer it has fished fairly consistently and hopefully will remain good.
On a blistering 36 degree day I was able to gain my new PB of a yella measuring 56cm . I was super happy to see gold from the depths after it latched onto my live shrimp after a typical solid bump on the bait.
A new venture for myself was to try the Ecogear ZX40 blade . What a great lure they are and I had several quality yellas smack them with positive top lip hook ups . I used the colour "the dark night" lifting them about half to 1 metre and simply letting them drop to the bottom again while drifting structured edges. I also applied scent (X factor) to the lure every so often.  The super sharp hooks also produced  bass, spangled perch and even a small tilapia and they are very snag resistant fished vertically .
Until next time tight lines everyone.
    Cheers
    Steve.

I've been lucky enough to be working at Amity Pt on North Stradbroke Island, and while the work bit means that fishing time for me is very limited, I have been able to assist my students and Max to catch some good fish.
As well as the usual grassies, Moses Perch and squire there have been some trophy fish mixed in. First, one of my American students on his 4th cast in Australia got an 84 cm mulloway on a lightly weighted hardihead. I suspect he won't get a bigger fish in his remaining time in Australia.
Then Max showed came over and showed everyone how it is done with a trio of Mangrove Jacks - 47, 55 and 57 cm on live yakkas. He did an excellent job landing those fish landbased in very rough ground.
The squid have been present but not abundant, but there are enough to make it worthwhile.
Remember you don't need a boat to catch good fish.

Got a call from a long time mate who i haven't seen for awhile, who only fishes with fly rod gear and catches all sorts on fly in the bay including snapper, jacks, jew, threadies and even a metre long barra!. Anyway the plan was to chase jewies on fly the other night in the southern bay. After being introduced to using fly gear with Uncle Tony catching Rainbow Trout awhile ago, i was keen to both catch up with him and also to maybe improve my fly casting abilities. To be honest i would have just been happy to be a passenger in his boat to watch and witness his skills.
But being the mate he is, when we got to spot x, he proceeded to position his boat nicely with the minny and then handed me one of his fly rods and gave me instructions on when and where to cast the fly. He's the sort of fella who gets just as much of a thrill and satisfaction letting the deckie catch while he enjoys watching their excitement.
It wasn't long before we could hear and see the jew busting the bait near and on the surface under the moonlight.
It really is exciting to sight cast a fly to where the action is, slowly retrieve it and then watch a jew inhale the fly on the surface!  The visual anticipation is addictive for sure.
Once hooked i was advised to give them nothing, no line at all if possible, otherwise they would swim straight back into the structure and it would be game over. Well that would be easier said than done on a 25kg model - that i'd like to see lol. Definately different for me from being used to bait fishing and letting the drag scream.
Not monsters but all up we caught three jew and two big tailor, all released and i had a ball !.

3 of us went this morning. We had a bit of trouble checking our shrimp traps as the dam has fallen around one foot since last time . We had to keep adjusting the depth of our motors to clear the submerged timber that we used to pass over easily. Took us around 10 minutes to get off one stump that I ran up on. Was going flat out and raised the bow about a foot. The barred grunter were thick as usual until we found a spot that was clear of them. We ended up catching 40 odd bass from this one spot before some thunder forced us to head back to the ramp.with a final tally of 66 bass, one tandanus and one eel. Cheers Ray

I have a plan to go out with Steve this Wednesday, with the weather looking good. Then I was having a text conversation with Kat on Friday or Saturday and discovered she had Monday free from work. So, with the weather looking even better on Monday we decided it was too good to miss. Twice a week is doable at my age. haha
Plan was to launch at Manly, hit Mud for some bait then head over to Harry's. We didn't make it to Harry's. After we got some bait, I just spotlocked on a mark out of habit and completely forgot to go to Harry's. 😲 Must have been the bad night's sleep...
Anyway, the day started well with a legal grassie first up, then some other unders, all on my side of the boat. Knowing Kat had not been for a fish for awhile, I did the gentlemanly thing and swapped sides. Well, didn't she show me up, bringing in a few good ones whilst all I got were snags. So I went up the front of the boat and we both fished the good side.

And we both caught more fish. Mainly grassies, some legal, some not as well as a few undersize squire and a little tusky just for good measure. I wasn't sure if the bag limit on grassies was 5 or 10. I tried to check on the Queensland Fishing App, but the wifi reception at Mud is atrocious, so I put out the question to both @Old Scaley and @benno573 via text. I thought we had 9 and a bream.
With that in mind and at an opportune time, i.e. when I got a knot in my braid and didn't feel like retying my leader, we headed off to do some trolling for spotties again. The conditions at this point were excellent, with the surface of the water like an oil slick. So we sped up to the M8 where we started trolling, headed towards Moreton, then down to Shark Spit, then back towards Mud.
A large school of Bonito sprung up in front of us so I just trolled straight into them. Shortly after, the trolling board popped up and Kat brought in little bonito to be vacuum sealed for bait at a later date. We didn't see much other action, other than a suspected school of spotties doing little bust ups. We tried to get in front of them without joy. We had to be careful as we were right on the edge of the green zone.
Back to Mud we went for 1 more legal grassie and a few unders before pulling the pin at 1.50pm
Kat caught the most for the day, which was good to see after her long layoff. It wasn't until taking the photo at the end of the day that we realised we had 1 less than we thought. 9 grassies (from 31 to 37), 1 bream (29) and the bonito.

Thanks for coming out Kat. A very pleasant day. 👍

Alex2505 reacted to AUS-BNE-FISHO in More Bassing [Brisbane River Session #201]
    Hi all
This morning my Dad and I decided to go and suss out a couple of new spots on the river fishing for bass - the first of which we planned to fish landbased then the second of which we planned to kayak at and maybe have a quick cast as well. We arrived at our chosen location at about 5:00AM, but annoyingly due to some roadwork and not having a good knowledge of the area we didn't find the access track and start fishing until about 5:45AM (left kayak on car roof while we were here).
The sun was hardly peaking out from the sky as I flicked my Cicada surface lure across the narrow stretch of water at the first flat bit of the access track. Low and behold, about half way through my retrieve, something came and smacked the lure off the top of the water making a nice splash. It was only little, but I pulled in my first bass on surface, and for that matter, my first fish on a surface lure too! Nice.

    About 26cm.
We continued moving downstream, and my Dad was flicking around a decent size hardbody first up which was quickly changed to a plastic with a jig spinner after we found out that it wasn't swimming very well. We met another angler who had also just started fishing for the morning, and he gave us a couple little tips about a general area to fish. We continued walking, and after going for the best part of fifteen minutes found a rather large pool where we started casting. It wasn't long before the surface lure worked again, this time for a bass that was only about 8CM long.

    Little guy
My Dad and I kept casting in this pool for about another 25 minutes, and apart from a giant carp leaping out (at least 70CM) there was no other action. We decided to continue to walk back up towards the car, where we found a couple more access points, but after about 40 minutes of casting and fishing we were not successful so we headed back downstream towards the area we had seen some others before. After a bit of a scramble around and plenty of lure changes, we were at the spot. I was flicking a Halco RMG and my Dad was still using the soft plastic with a jig spinner. A few casts around the snags and I was on - but it was only another 8CM bass. After a bad tangle in my braid forcing me to retie a knot in the braid (not ideal but will do I thought), we continued downstream past a local guy who was helpful in giving us some tips. Based on his advice, my dad switched back to the Cicada and I stuck with the RMG (advice was to fish the banks really close with cicada lures). It wasn't long before he put his tips into action, and had a little bass on the bank. My Dad and I continued flicking though, and I eventually caught a small bass, but the biggest of the day thus far (maybe 27CM).
I think I got another one in the following casts after this, before overshooting my lure straight into a tree on the other side of the bank. After I attempted to walk around to get it (but failed), my Dad, who had still not caught a fish at this point, went and got it. As he chucked the lure in, I focused as hard as I could, and sure enough, hooked up to another bass on the retrieve. After releasing that one, I got a slightly larger one, maybe 28CM, as he was walking back around. I didn't bother getting photos of any of these as I didn't have my phone.
I gave the RMG rod to my Dad and after a couple casts in ideal position he went for a third cast. It landed centimeters away from the rocky bank and he started to retrieve the RMG past a submerged log. Sure enough, he hooked up to a slightly better fish than what I had been catching so far, and after a few feisty headshakes we had brought a solid (for us) 32CM bass onto the bank. After getting the hooks out and taking a photo, we released it back into the river.

    Dad's bass
We fished for about 20 minutes after this but could not manage any more fish, so began to make our way back to the car. I can see how some people manage to catch 20+ bass in a session landbased around there, because they were pretty aggressive at one point hooking up nearly every second cast! Also, I dropped a good fish too, which felt a lot heavier than the ones I was catching before I snagged my lure in the tree. We made our way back into the car and walked up a new track which was quicker than going back on the rocks and along the river, pleased with our morning so far.
We decided that we wouldn't go kayaking as it was too late by the time we got to Kholo Bridge to have a look to launch the kayak and go fishing. It looks like a promising launch point, though the bridge itself was disgusting with food and rubbish chucked all over it. Next time we go to this spot, I think we will start off with surface cicadas and as the sun comes out switch to Halco RMG's, which seem to be a good lure!
Anyways, thanks for reading, I hope you enjoyed. I'm on school camp this week so this will probably be my last session for a little while. Hopefully I can get some more bass or get back into thready fishing soon!
    Cheers Hamish
    Stats of Trip:
Lures Used: Standout lures were Jackall Pompadour Cicada lure, Halco RMG lure - other lures used were sugarpen knockoff, soft plastics, soft plastics with jig spinners, small 40mm hardbodies, larger hardbodies.
Gear Used: My Dad used a Stradic 3000 on a 4-7KG Shimano Raider with 15 pound braid and leader, I used an Abu Garcia Veritas 2-4KG with a 2500 Diawa Tierra with 8 pound braid and ten pound leader.
Location: Kholo Bridge, around Mount Crosby
    Fish Caught: About 7 bass
Notes: Lighter gear and smaller lures seemed to work better than larger spinners or divers. Was quite chilly first up but ended up being pretty hot. Next time start off with cicadas and switch to Halco RMG's as sun comes up. Kholo Bridge good launch spot though bad parking as the dirt track is very uneven (only 4wd could go around).
Overall Success Rate: 80% - fun session

I set myself a little goal for this summer, and that was to hopefully land a decent sized Tuskie, with my L plates on I started fishing the reef around the bay islands and was having some degree of success, it’s unforgiving territory and I’ve probably lost more fish than I’ve stopped.

Still keen to tangle with the larger models I sucked it up and went fishing on the weekend, it felt naughty and wrong as I have become spoilt doing week day trips lately, anyway the plan was to launch around 4:30 and be back no later than 11 to avoid a chaotic boat ramp, first up I was going to see if I could locate some Jew before targeting the Tuskies, after sounding around for half an hour or more to no avail I gave up and set off.
Upon arriving at the spot I did a few drifts flicking a plastic for 2 small squire and a small Maori Cod, with that out of my system I began focusing on the Tuskies, not long after the first drop I hooked up to a nice fish that went 4.5kg

The second drop saw me peak a touch too early, big swing no ding, I think I might have ripped it back out of his mouth, 3rd drop saw me connected to this one

slightly smaller but still great fun, the fourth drop had me hooked onto a much larger specimen which buckled me over and proceed to return to his home oblivious of my locked drag, it’s definitely true, these things pull like freight trains!, happy with the 2 in the box I made my way back in before 10am only stopping for a quick flick here and there for no result.

As far as Tuskies go these are really only pups, but I feel I’m on my P plates now, fingers crossed one day I might get my opens.

Managed 81 bass all up with at least 50 of them on lures. I was trolling in the timber and I would get 2 on the way in and 2 on the way out, they were sitting 15ft down in 80ft of water. Some more come from trolling close to the edges, some on spinnerbaits and some on MDM plastic shrimp with some scent on.Picked up a couple of pies on way home for lunch, wife was very pleased.

With the weather looking outstanding for Friday and Saturday it was a no-brainer to get out there while it was good.
    Friday
Headed out with @Allnighter in pursuit of spotties, then back to Mud Island for some snapper. Wind was up a bit on the forecast with a solid 10 knots until it almost glassed out about 11am.
We started trolling from the M8 beacon and headed over to the Four Beacons with nothing to show. Darren threw a slug at a few beacons, but no luck. We'd put a couple of hours on the motor, when we decided to troll down to Shark Spit before giving up and heading to Mud. Up came a grinner on the trolling board with 3 inch spoon. It was kept for later.
We continued on, getting closer to the destination when both rods went off. Darren's with a 2.5 metre/120mm Laser Pro in Qantas and mine with the 5 metre trolling board with the 3 inch gold spoon. Shortly into the fight Darren's let go/pulled hooks. I got mine boatside and Darren went to swing it in when the leader snapped. The spottie, guesstimated to be about 75, won it's freedom as well as a gold spoon award.
We circled around to find them again but could not track them back down. We headed for Mud, initially trolling without interest. At Mud we jigged up a bit of bait then headed for one of my marks. Plenty of bait showing on the sounder got the anticipation level up a bit. Baits were deployed. First enquiry was on mine. Turned out to be a shark. Surprise, surprise. He was released after a harsh talking to. We hooked up to five more before calling it a day. Back to ramp at 1pm, defeated.
We put in a fair effort but didn't get the reward/s. Still, a good day out with good company. Thanks for coming along, Darren.

    Saturday
Benno gave me a call earlier in the week after noticing the Saturday forecast would enable a run to Caloundra. Required approvals were sought and granted. Up at 2.20 this morning saw us launch by 4.30 and make our way in pretty good conditions. They had the forecast right ! Yay.
We arrived at our first mark. I deployed some cuttlefish head, whilst @benno573 dropped down a live hardihead with a hard head. I caught a little squire that flipped off before I had to deal with it. Nothing was too interested in the hardihead, so it was changed for a snack sized live diver whiting. Bang ! First good grassie of the day discovered the ills of snackfood and was soon in the esky after a quick measure. I can't recall what that was, but it was well legal.
Enthused by the catch, I rigged up my heavier trolling outfit for a live diver whiting (meal-sized). Dropped it down and went back to fishing with my cuttlefish rod. Things were pretty quiet until my livie rod went off. Good fish ! Reefed me. Tried to maneuver the boat at different angles to no avail. I could still feel the fish on the end when I busted off. Somewhat disappointed, but the day was still young.
Things went a bit quiet and we moved a couple of times for one more quality grassie. The decision was made to go for a troll, hoping to come across a spottie or three or four. Heaps of bustups going on from smaller longtails (from what we saw close enough) and birds everywhere. Hopes were high again. Just before Raper's Shoal we hooked up on the trolling board rod. In came a schoolie, going 52 on the lie detector. Went 'round again without luck, so we decided to head to a grassie mark. Benno found some good ground on the way with a nice bait ball with fish sitting beneath. "Spotlock!" was the call.
Benno had two rods out, 1 with a floating pillie. I had the trusted cuttlefish head. The floating pillie went off. Expecting a mack of some sort, the run wasn't up to speed. In came another good grassie. Delicious ! My rod went off and in came another that didn't need to be measured. Then Benno was on again while I was fixing the net. Then both the other rods went off. Benno lifted his fish in - another good grassie, while I wrangled with a bl00dy shark. I can't remember what happened on Benno's second rod. Unfortunately, our leave pass time had expired, so we had to leave a hot bite. Certainly a mark that will be tested again.
All in all a good day, with 5 quality grassies from 37 to 48 (if I remember correctly) and conditions that let us open up the throttle (and surf the occasional swell haha) on the way home.
Good morning session, Benno. Thanks for coming along.

Went to Baroon Pocket this morning with Rick, Joy and Andrew. 2 mongrells,1 tandan,15 bass and numerous 3 inch spangled perch. Good to catch up with Andrew. Really makes you feel old when your son retires.
    Cheers Ray

I started off the session yesterday arvo by packing my shark fishing gear and a selection of shark bait with the intent of catching …whiting. I Walked down to the jetty and set out my shark rod first And began cast netting. It wasn’t long before I could see big schools of herring splashing around the end of the jetty, I cast my net and caught about twenty. I cast out my spare old rod with a herring just to keep me from being bored. I started tidying my cart up when I heard the slow tick of my herring rod, I turned around and my reel started to scream . I hooked into it and whatever it was took a big run. Halfway through the fight it managed to wrap me around something but I managed to get it out, it started to tire and after one last dash for the jetty i got it to the surface and I saw the huge silver bat they call a mulloway. After a tense moment trying to get him in the dilly he was safe on the jetty
Sadly he had the usual barotrauma and also swallowed the hook. So I quickly dispatched him and took it home for quite a few dinners.
    Cheers Thorbjörn
