timtam_ reacted to samsteele115 in Many Casts Nice Reward
Evening all,
I had a couple of hours free before work this arvo so I tried my luck at catching dinner land based. I got a tailor early on but it seemed that there wasn't many of those around. I also got a small trev about 35cm which I decided to let go. I was immediately rewarded by the fishing gods next cast when my samaki slash 55 gets pack attacked by some solid GTs across the surface. This kept me interested for the next hour or so trying to find them again. Dozens and dozens of casts went by. I usually only fish this landbased spot for 15 mins before moving on as it seems to be a case of fish either being there or not. However having seen the chunky geets cruising around definitely kept me interested for longer this time.
Eventually my lure got smacked (60g chrome this time) and immediately knew it was one of the proper ones I'd seen before. I tightened up as much as was safe on my 30lb set up but was still going to require a bit of luck and skill to angle the fish away from the rocky bommies that jut out everywhere.
Well, I got lucky and with a bit of rock hopping I steered the fish onto a ledge. Pretty stoked on the light gear to get the job done! Man they are an incredibly powerful fish.
70cm and a few delicious meals to come. Thanks Mr Trevally! Very grateful. Good feeling after so many donut sessions recently
yes I have pants on

timtam_ reacted to samsteele115 in Change It Up
Had another go landbased this morning in some fishy looking waters. Nothing for the first half a dozen casts or more; which called for change of technique. Instead of the cast and fast retrieval of the lure which usually works well, I hopped the metal lure off the bottom with a slow wind and twitch of the rod... BOOM hooked up to a decent Trev shy of the metre mark. I saw it thrash on the surface as it shook it's head before flicking me the bird with it's tail and wrapping me around a rock. Not nice, but sometimes happens.
Next 4 casts was a hookup each cast... same slow retrieval. Landed a nice 53cm tailor and bigeye trev (I think). Tomorrows camping trip protein sorted.
It goes to show we can never have fishing figured out no matter how often we fish a spot or how much success we have. Keep trying new things until something works.

It was a privilege to be there today and I am grateful I could say goodbye. That was the first time I have seen an open casket.
There were heaps of people there and we had to spill outside. So many were in fishing shirts. I think he would have loved it.
Many of us (including me) owe him a debt of gratitude for the fishing wisdom he imparted. I don't mind saying he out fished me.
It was great to see so many AFO members there, all dressed in fishing shirts.
Vale Lance. Collins. RIP brother.

Loving all the contributions!! @Luvit your pine river Barra is the standout... that's incredible!! In saying that you could almost certainly target them for years without catching a single one (in the pine)

Thought it would be interesting to start a new thread as I've heard of some pretty cool catches over time.
The question is, what have you caught? I'm talking about odd fish, rare fish, old boots, rods, anything!! I'll start;
I caught an L.Wilson "Live Fibre" Custom Built baitcaster rod, complete with a Shimano Caenan spooled with what I'm thinking is about 20lb braid. I was bait fishing with the old man in Storm King Dam near Stanthorpe, and managed to pull this up from the depths completely at random! At the time, it still had a Jackall Mask Vibe rigged as well... But I promptly lost the lure to a snag. The rod required abit of a clean up as it had all sorts of things growing on it. But it works as good as new and I'm progressively learning skim casting for my trip north after christmas.

Go offshore and enjoy yourself.
Take some spare fuel with you and just see how much you use for the day so that you know for future trips.
I think you would be flat out using the 70 liters for a days fishing because once out there, you will use bugger all fuel while fishing unless you go trolling.
Sooner or later you have to try it so get out there while the weather forecast is really good and have some fun.

For a cheap, performing reel try the new or old sienna... have caught some absolute quality fish and the drag is stupidly smooth for a low budget reel. Have had mine for three years and still easily fish light hardbodies or plastics, and the drag sounds beaut and doesn't jump if i have a fish pulling line. 10/10 would recommend

Tea is more dangerous than beer. Please avoid drinking tea.
I discovered this last night, I had 14 beers till 3am at the pub
while my wife was just drinking tea at home.
You should have seen how violent and angry she was when I got home.
I was peaceful, silent and headed to bed as she shouted at me...
all night and even into the next morning.
Please ladies, if you can't handle your tea, don't drink it...

When I was a kid we spent a lot of time on the broadwater. One afternoon I swam the stern anchor into the beach and dragged it up. There was some old fishing line on it and as a keen fishing grom I started to pull it in hoping for a sinker or perhaps some tackle I could use. It took ages as there was a lot of line out.
After a few minutes I noticed some tension on the line and soon realised I was fighting a fish. I pulled in a solid bream! Probably the best I had ever caught at that stage.
I figure that someone had set a line and perhaps forgotten to tighten the drag or close the bail arm. and I got a sinker haha

I have a friend who always seems to catch old bongs when fishing with plastics. He always takes photos and calls them 'Catch of the day'(I'll see if I can round up the pictures). He reckons he hears of heaps of people catching them, anyone else got one?

So if you have caught a bass on a banana, why the superstition? That seems like good luck to me!!

In the early days of BFO a member claimed a cobia in the Brisbane river and me being a doubting thomas went and tried for one under the Indooroopilly bridge and no cobia bit i did catch a 60cm bass on a cavendish banana. Sorry no picture but then there was no photo of the cobia.
Cheers

Well it wasn't as clean as yours is @timtam_, but I found the picture of @benno573's mighty bay catch.

My mate Wallyfly caught a rod up at baroon dam, it was a baitcaster, when he reeled it in it had a bass on the end with the line wrapped around it, cutting it nearly in half, but was still alive, released to live another day.
I found a baitcaster up there also with a 6000 eggbeater reel on it and the lure still attached, I got the lure, Luke got the rod for cleaning the reel and my son got the reel for open water fishing.
Just recently I found half a rod up there as well. I might add I have donated a nice baitcaster outfit to the depths up there as well.
Also down at Wangdang Illawarra I saw a flash in the water and cast to it while I was flathead fishing one day, result one kids rod and reel with a big bream on the end of it.
My best by far was when the water went down to 15% at NPD I hooked a few bundles of lures all in tight balls some balls were worth $200 dollars. Near the dam wall, while casting spinnerbaits, heaps of jackal lure amongst them (i think a lot of them were already mine

A Sea Horse.
Pulled in a small tree branch which was submerged for some time in Woods Bay Noosa late last year.
I was about to discard it until I spotted said creature. Quick photo on my finger and waded him back in.
Photo soon.......
